Definitions
- the present invention relates to a training ball for the game of football, also commonly known as soccer.
- Football is a game that, when played professionally, involves many skills and a high level of commitment to practice or learning new skills. There are skills required to kick the ball accurately, whether it be for passing to another player or shooting towards goal. Although during most of the game the players kick the ball whilst it is in motion, there are occasions when the ball is stationary, the so called “dead ball” situations, such as corner kicks, free kicks, penalty kicks, and even goal kicks.
- an object of the present invention to provide a training ball for the game of football that presents a number of designated strike locations thereon which a player must strike in order to kick the ball accurately, such as for swerving or bending the ball to the left or to the right, or for striking the ball straight over short or long distances and with varying lift above the ground.
- a training ball for the game of football comprising a substantially spherical ball upon which is presented at least one strike target at a designated location on the ball, the ball having a midline extending around at least a part of the circumference of the ball, wherein the midline, when the ball is so placed that the midline is vertical, serves as a reference for a left side location and a right side location of the ball, the left and right side locations being on opposite sides of the midline, the arrangement being such that the left side location is a strike target for the inside of the left foot or the outside of the right foot for causing the ball to swerve to the right, and the right side location is a strike target for the inside of the right foot or the outside of the left foot for causing the ball to swerve to the left.
- the midline extends around the entire circumference of the ball, wherein the midline further serves as a reference for a centre location of the ball, the centre location being a strike target for the instep of the left foot or the right foot for causing the ball to travel in a straight line and low to the ground.
- the centre location is at the opposite side of the ball to the left and right side locations.
- the midline serves as a reference for a below centre location of the ball, the below centre location being a strike target for the instep of the left foot or the right foot for causing the ball to travel in a straight line and with lift off the ground.
- the left and right side locations are triangular in shape and are represented by different colours.
- the centre location may be diamond shaped, and may be represented by a colour that is different to those of the left and right side locations.
- Fig. 1 is a view of a first side of a preferred training ball of the invention showing left and right locations being strike targets for causing the ball to swerve to the right or left, respectively,
- Fig. 2 is a view of a second side of the training ball of Fig. 1 , the second side being opposite to the first side, and showing a centre location being a strike target for causing the ball to travel in a straight line and low to the ground,
- Fig. 3 is a view of a third side of the training ball of Figs. 1 and 2, the third side being between the first and second sides, and showing a below centre location being a strike target for causing the ball to travel in a straight line and with lift off the ground, and
- Fig. 4 is a sectional side view through a portion of the left or right side locations of the training ball of Figs. 1 to 3 specifically showing surface gripping means.
- the football training ball 10 shown in Figs. 1 to 3 is substantially spherical and has presented thereon various strike targets at designated locations on the ball.
- the ball has a midline 1 2 extending around the entire circumference of the ball.
- the ball has a foam back polyvinylchloride based casing (also known as “polyviscochloride”), beneath which there are three layers of polyester/cotton linings or backing cloth.
- the ball has a shiny water proof coated finish on its exterior, is made in 1 8 or 32 panel construction, has a 1 .3 mm thickness, and has a high air retention rubber based bladder (commonly known as a "butyl bladder”).
- a first side of the ball is shown with the ball so placed that the midline 12 is vertical.
- the orange coloured, triangular patch 14 is a strike target for the inside of the left foot or the outside of the right foot for causing the ball to swerve or bend to the right.
- the green coloured, triangular patch 1 6 is a strike target for the inside of the right foot or the outside of the left foot for causing the ball to swerve or bend to the left.
- a second side of the ball 10 is shown that is opposite to the first side (shown in Fig. 1 ), with the midline 1 2 again arranged vertically.
- the midline 1 2 again arranged vertically.
- the white coloured, diamond shaped patch 22 is a strike target for the instep of the left foot or the right foot for causing the ball to travel in a straight line and low to the ground.
- a third side of the ball 10 is shown that is between the first and second sides, with the midline 12 arranged horizontally.
- the black coloured panel 24 is a strike target for the instep of the left foot or the right foot for causing the ball to travel in a straight line and with lift off the ground.
- the triangular patches 14, 1 6 may be constructed of an inner rubber panel 28 and a superimposed outer leather panel 30, as shown in Fig. 4. However, they are preferably made of the same material as the other panels of the ball, and no leather is present.
- the inner rubber panel 28 has integrally formed protrusions 32 that pass through correspondingly located holes 34 in the outer leather panel 30.
- the protrusions 32 project outwardly from the outermost surface of the leather panel 30 to an extent whereby they provide a frictional means for gripping against the boot of a player striking the leather panel 30 of the ball.
- the resultant gripping characteristics of the outermost leather panels 30 which form the differently coloured triangular patches 14, 1 6 assist the player to kick the ball in a way that causes the ball to swerve or bend in the desired left or right direction.
- the rubber panel 28 is stitched to the rim of the leather panel 30, and the leather panel 30 is stitched in the conventional manner to surrounding leather panels which do not have the gripping characteristics described above.
- the coloured regions, patches or panels of the ball may be photoluminescent or fluorescent, for glow in the dark qualities.
