Abstract

The invention relates to a load cell adapter beam fitted with load cells for weighing loads on a platform of a truck or other machinery. The invention is characterized in that the load platform is mounted directly on the load cells and in that the load cell adapter beam is mounted on the chassis of the truck or other machinery.

Description

Load cell adapter beam.
The invention relates to an adapter beam for mounting load cells for weighing the load on trucks and other machinery.
The invention relates more specifically to trucks or machinery for heavy loads in tough environments and especially for trucks with a tilting load carrier, or dump trucks.
It is well known to try to measure the load on trucks by different means such as for example by pressure transducers in pneumatic springs, strain sensors on mechanical spring systems and also by strain sensors on the axles. On heavy duty trucks, rather thin, low precision load cells are known to be mounted in connection with the shock absorbers and in dump truck it is well known to mount several different types of load cells on the chassis and the tilting mechanism in order to measure the load on the load carrier or dump platform. In most of these known measuring and weighing systems, friction in the spring systems and guiding members for the load platform introduces stray forces which interfere with the measurement and the weighing.
It is the object of the invention to provide an adapter beam fitted with precision load cells, which avoids the problems of implementing thin load cells in direct connection with the shock absorbers and the problem of several different types of load cells normally used in dump trucks.
suBSTiTUi&sHee: The load cell adapter beam according to the invention also does away with the interference of stray forces from guiding members and makes it possible, anytime, to fit a weighing system without any modifications to the truck itself.
According to the invention this object is achieved by mounting the load cells, carrying the platform or dump platform directly, in an load cell adapter beam which is resting on one or more supporting members on the chassis, preferably in the form of shock absorbers, and which preferably is fitted with one or more parts of the bearing unit of the tilting mechanism if the load cell adapter beam is mounted on a dump truck.
Figure 1 shows schematically the chassis 1, of a heavy duty truck with the platform 2 and the shock absorbers 3, 4 mounted each side of the truck to absorb shocks from heavy loads dropped into the load platform
Figure 2 shows schematically the chassis 5 of a dump truck with the dump platform 6, the bearing unit parts 7 and 8 of the tilting mechanism, mounted on each side of the truck.
One or more shock absorbers, 9 are mounted between the chassis 5 and the dump platform 6, each side of the dump truck, to absorb shocks from heavy loads dropped into the dump platform.
The known procedure for fitting weighing systems on heavy duty trucks is to mount thin load cells over or under the shock absorbers 3, 4. Mounting the load cells anywhere else between the chassis and the platform, has the consequence that measuring errors are introduced because the loads, which should be applied at the load cells directly, are short circuited by other mounting devices, or alternatively, the shock absorbers are rendered inefficient. The height of the load cell has to be as small as possible, because for reasons of stability, the centre of gravity has to be kept as low as possible. Load cells with a low height are not available with a high precision and a high shock load capacity at the same time.
In the case of dump trucks the known procedure is to mount thin load cells over or under the shock absorbers 9, the same way as on heavy duty trucks, but to get reasonable weighing results, force measuring means also have to be mounted in th« bearing unit parts 7 and 8 at the rear end of the dump truck.
In dump trucks it is necessary to mount side guiding members on the chassis to guide the front of the dump platform.
Without these side guides the bearing unit will be destroyed by side forces when the dump truck is moving in rough terrain, but the weighing result is influenced to a high degree by friction forces from these side guiding members.
Figure 3 shows a basic embodiment of the invention with a load cell adapter beam, mounted on a heavy duty truck. Figure 4 shows a basic embodiment with a load cell adapter beam, mounted on a dump truck.
Figures 5 to 8 are cross sections of figure 4.
The load cell adapter beam, according to the invention, for a heavy duty truck will be described in further details with reference to figure 3, showing the basic invention with the heavy duty truck chassis 1, the platform 2, the shock absorbers 3, 4 and the load cells 11 and 12, mounted in the load cell adapter beam 13.
The load cells are bolted to the load platform 2 and are coupled to the load cell adapter beam 13 through the load transfer members 14.
The load cell adapter beam 13, is supported by the shock absorbers 3, 4 in exactly the same manner the load platform was supported by the shock absorbers in the known heavy truck design.
The load cell adapter beam according to the invention, used on a dump truck, will be described in further details with reference to figure 4, showing the dump truck chassis 5, the dump platform 6, the chassis mounted bearing part 7, the bearing part 8 of the load cell adapter beam 15, the shock absorber 9 and the load cells 11 and 12, with the load transfer members 14. By preferably designing the load cell adapter beams 13 and 15, as U profile beams, and preferably with the opening of the U profile facing downwards and by preferably placing the load cells along the load cell adapter beams in cut outs in the back of the U beam and in positions where they do not interfere with the shock absorbers or the tilting mechanism, it is possible to use rather high heavy duty precision load cells without lifting the centre of gravity of the load platform excessively. The centre of gravity is only lifted the thickness of the back of the U profile and the necessary clearance between the load cell adapter beam and the underside of the load platform or dump platform.
The most important advantage of the load cell adapter beams according to the invention is that no modification of the truck itself is necessary, no modification of the shock absorbers or the tilting bearing part of the truck and no welding or drilling operations have to be performed on the chassis.
Only the load platform or dump platform have to undergo simple modifications which are fully acceptable to truck producers and authorities.
In the case of heavy duty trucks the only modification is to provide the underside of the load platform with threaded mounting holes for the load cells or to weld an adapter plate with threaded holes to the underside of the load platform and to bolt the load cell adapter beam to the shock absorbers. In the case of dump trucks, the load cell adapter beam is advantageously designed with an integrated bearing part which is identical to the bearing part which has to be removed from the dump platform.
Due to the fact that preferred embodiments of the invention has been illustrated and described herein it will be apparent to those skilled in the art that modifications and improvements may be made to forms herein specifically disclosed.
Accordingly, the present invention is not to be limited to the forms specifically disclosed.
As an example, the force transferring members may take the form of axles, beams, springs or levers to exclude unwanted forces or torsions on the load cells.
As another example, the platform or dump platform may be mounted on the load cells of the load cell adapter beam, indirectly through side load or shock absorbing means.
As still another example, the load cell adapter beam may be mounted indirectly on the chassis of the truck or other machinery through side load or shock absorbing means.
As a further example, any number of load cells may be fitted to the load cell adapter beams according to the invention.
