Abstract

A cast photochromic lens for ocular use includes a photochramic film and a cast resin. The lens is curable by heat or radiation. The lens has relatively long service life and resistance to photochromic dye fatigue. Amount of dyes used during manufacturing is minimized. The lens can be made using commercially available cast resins, such as those made by thermoset or radiation-initiated processes. The photochromic lens can include a protective layer and a polyurethane film that includes a photochromic compound. The lens can be made by curing a mixture of solid thermoplastic polyurethane, a urethane prepolymer and a photochromic compound. The lens can include polycarbonate and have high impact resistance.
