Abstract

La présente invention concerne un dispositif optique (1000) qui comprend une région (912) d'interférence multimode (MMI), une unique entrée optique (908), une unique sortie optique (910), une première électrode (1010) associée au dispositif MMI et une seconde électrode (902) ou une face (914) d'un substrat à semi-conducteurs (906) située à l'opposé d'une autre face sur laquelle la région MMI (912) est formée, la première électrode (1010) et la seconde électrode (902) étant disposées de manière à appliquer un champ électrique à la région MMI (912), afin de causer ainsi l'absorption de lumière se propageant à travers le dispositif MMI. Le dispositif peut être utilisé en tant qu'atténuateur optique ou modulateur électroabsorbant (EAM). La région MMI permet l'étalement de la lumière couplée par le biais de l'entrée (908) à l'intérieur de la région MMI (912), diminuant ainsi l'absorption de puissance optique par surface unitaire dans le dispositif et améliorant ainsi la dissipation thermique.
