Description

SUPPORT MEMBER AND MATTRESS
The present invention relates to a support member for a baby or child's mattress. The present invention also relates to a baby or child's mattress.
Supporting materials are known which are manufactured from a lower and upper layer with connecting fibres therebetween. Such materials are applied in advantageous manner for the purpose of improving for instance the seat- ing in chairs. A known advantage of these materials is that body perspiration can be discharged by means of air present in the layer with the connecting fibres.
In order to provide a practical new application for such materials the present invention provides a sup- port member for improving the recumbent position on a mattress, comprising:
- a three-dimensional crochet or knitted structure comprising an upper air-permeable layer, a lower air- permeable layer and a connecting layer which is built up of a plurality of connecting filaments extending between the upper and lower layers,
- a cover layer comprising textile which can also be used to attach the top mattress in removable manner to a mattress, and - coupling means for coupling the cover layer to the three-dimensional structure.
A support member according to an embodiment of the present invention can for instance be applied in advantageous manner as support layer that is easy to clean in cots and children's beds, a known problem of which is that faeces can result in undesirable contamination. A further aspect of the present invention relates to a support member for improving the recumbent position on a mattress, comprising:
- a three-dimensional crochet or knitted structure comprising an upper air-permeable layer, a lower air- permeable layer and a connecting layer which is built up of a plurality of connecting filaments extending between the upper and lower layers,
- an encasing member for encasing the three- dimensional crochet or knitted structure during use, wherein the encasing member comprises a cover layer and an underside,
- wherein the underside of the encasing member is provided with placing openings for placing the three- dimensional crochet or knitted structure. Such a support member can be easily placed on an existing mattress, wherein the three-dimensional crochet or knitted structure (3-D structure) can be inserted into the encasing member. The support member according to these aspects can be util- ized in suitable manner when for instance infants sleep thereon. These infants will have an additional possibility of breathing in air via the three-dimensional structure. In a further embodiment the placing openings can be closed by means of at least one overlapping part and preferably at least two overlapping parts of the encasing member, preferably from the underside thereof. It hereby becomes possible to place the three-dimensional structure in the casing and remove it therefrom in simple manner. When two openings with overlapping parts are applied, placing of a 3-D structure is greatly simplified, particularly in the case that the support member has a rectangular form with a relatively elongate shape. The extent to which this placing is facilitated can be appreciated from the example of placing a duvet in a duvet cover, this being rather difficult from one side.
In a further preferred embodiment the underside and/or the cover layer of the encasing member comprises a moisture-proof layer. The underlying mattress can hereby be protected from liquids spilled or discharged involuntarily from the sleeper. An advantage hereof is that the mattress can remain clean and that only the 3-D structure and/or the encasing member need be cleaned in for instance a washing machine. The moisture-proof layer preferably comprises PVC or polyurethane .
In a further preferred embodiment the support member comprises on at least one side of the three- dimensional layer a foam layer which has at least par- tially an open-cell structure and/or which has been subjected to a reticulation process. Such a foam layer provides the advantage that the reclining comfort on the very well ventilating 3-D structure is further increased. The 3-D structure per se sometimes has the side effect under very heavy load that some rustling sound can occur. This is obviated for instance by applying the covering layer with open-cell foam while at the same time retaining the ventilating properties.
In one embodiment a cover layer in a support mem- ber according to the present invention is preferably connected to a mattress-enveloping fitted sheet structure. The problem of contamination is hereby solved in simple manner. An alternative method of fastening the support member is by means of flaps to be folded around a mat- tress.
The coupling means in the support member preferably comprise a substantially envelope-like structure. The three-dimensional structure can be accommodated in such a structure and can be removed therefrom in simple manner, for instance for the purpose of cleaning the support member.
For the purpose of keeping dry for instance a foam body of a mattress or a mattress manufactured in other manner, the envelope-like structure of the support member preferably comprises a foil layer which, together with the cover layer, forms the envelope. The cover layer herein also fulfils the function of the one side of the envelope and the foil layer, which also obstructs moisture, also fulfils the function of the second side of the envelope.
The waterproof layer is preferably arranged in the position of use between the mattress and the three- dimensional structure. The present invention also relates to a baby or child' s mattress comprising a support member for improving the recumbent position, comprising at least one three- dimensional crochet or knitted structure comprising an upper air-permeable layer, a lower air-permeable layer and a connecting layer which is built up of a plurality of connecting filaments extending between the upper and lower layers, this three-dimensional structure being arranged inside the mattress cover of the mattress. Just as the embodiments described in the foregoing, such an embodiment has the advantage that moisture can be drained in effective manner through the intermediate layer during reclining. The invention has the further object of having a positive effect in preventing cot death. The layer is very suitable for relieving pressure points on the body because it can be compressed per se more than 3 centimetres.
A further aspect of the present invention relates to a mattress, comprising: - a mattress body comprising a foam-like material, an inner spring construction and/or a pocket spring construction,
- a three-dimensional crochet or knitted structure on a bottom or top side of the mattress body at least in a position of use of a mattress, this structure comprising an upper air-permeable layer, a lower air-permeable layer and a connecting layer built up of a plurality of connecting filaments extending between the upper and lower lay- ers,
- at least one cover layer of a foam layer with at least partially an open-cell structure. Such an embodiment has advantages as further described in the foregoing and hereinbelow. In a further advantageous embodiment the baby or child' s .mattress comprises fastening means for fastening and opening the mattress cover, such as a zip, for removal thereof for cleaning purposes. Zips are preferably applied here along three sides of the mattress cover. Further advantages and features of the present invention are described hereinbelow with reference to the accompanying figures, in which:

- Fig. 3 shows a cut-away perspective view of the embodiment of figure 2 ;
- Fig. 4 is a cut-away perspective view of a fur- ther embodiment according to the present invention;
- Fig. 5 shows a perspective cut-away view of a further embodiment according to the present invention; - Fig. 6 is a schematic view of a further embodiment according to the present invention;
- Fig. 7 is a cut-away perspective view of a further embodiment according to the present invention. A first embodiment according to the present invention (Fig. 2,3) relates to a top mattress or a fitted sheet 1 with an integrated three-dimensional structure 7. This structure is shown in greater detail in Fig. 1. Such a structure is preferably applied with an open knitted up- per layer 2 and lower layer 3. Situated therebetween are monofilaments 3 which extend from the second layer to the first layer and which comprise polyester or other suitable materials .
Layer 7 is arranged between a cover layer or sheet layer 8 and a lower layer or envelope layer 5 of the fitted sheet. The fitted sheet is arranged in the figure round a mattress 13 which is in turn encased by means of a mattress cover 14. The fitted sheet is fastened here by means of textile portions 8 ' extending round the side walls of the mattress. Textile portions 12 connected to each other and to textile portions 8 ' extend on the underside of the mattress. Along the broken line of these textile portions an elastic band can be a arranged in a manner per se known for fitted sheets in order to hold the fitted sheet fixed during use thereof.
The envelope is formed by textile layers 6 and 8 ' . For this purpose these are sewn to each other along three sides while an opening 11 is defined along the fourth side. Layer 6 further takes a watertight form so that the mattress is safeguarded against moisture from above, such as transpiration moisture or other loss of moisture. Due to the positioning of the moisture-tight layer under the three-dimensional layer, all advantageous aspects of this latter in respect of moisture management are retained during use in combination with the moisture-tight layer.
A further preferred embodiment according to the present invention is shown in figure 4. This embodiment relates to a baby mattress 20 with a body 22 comprising two foam layers 24,25 and a three-dimensional buffer layer 23 similar to layer 7 for the purpose, among others, of lateral discharge of moisture. The mattress can hereby dry more quickly in the event it is wetted or after transpira- tion moisture has penetrated into the mattress.
The embodiment shown in figure 5 comprises a body 32 which is built up from a foam layer 34 and has a three- dimensional layer 33 and 36 on either side of mattress foam 34. This mattress 30 is further provided with a mat- tress cover 31 which encases the body.
The mattress cover of these embodiments can be removed for simple cleaning of the mattress. The transition between layers 33 and 36 and foam layer 34 is preferably provided with moisture-tight material, and layers 33 and 36 are fastened removably by means of for instance velcro tape. The foam body of the mattress can hereby be protected from moisture of one type or other from the body. In addition to using foam, the construction of the mattresses of the described embodiments can also be embodied in other manner, this as desired from materials known to the skilled person.
Fig. 6 shows schematically a further preferred embodiment according to the present invention. This embodiment relates to a casing or envelope 41 for a top mattress which can also be designated a mattress protector. The function of this cover with top mattress is to provide ventilation between the person, preferably a baby lying on a mattress, and the mattress. Cover 41 substantially comprises two functional layers, the upper layer on which the person lies and the lower layer situated between the top mattress and the actual mattress. The upper layer consists for instance of a layer of material such as for instance terry cloth or an anti-allergen material. The lower layer of cover 41 is the side shown schematically in figure 6. In this embodiment this lower layer is constructed from three parts. Central part 46 extends from line 51 to line 52 and is connected on either side to the upper layer along the seams or edges
41, 43. The lower layer further comprises two material parts 47, 48. Part 47 extends from broken line 54 to edge 44 of the lower layer. This flap 47 is connected to the upper layer along seams or edges 42, 43, 44. In similar manner flap 48 is connected to the upper layer along seams
42, 43, 45. Flap 48 extends from edge 45 to the broken line 53. Both flaps 47, 48 extend between the strip 46 and the upper layer at the position of the overlap with the strip. Flap 46 hereby lies above flaps 47, 48 when the encasing body 41 lies with the underside upward. This also becomes apparent in that lines 51,52 are continuous and lines 53,54 are broken, this indicating that they are not visible through the flap 46 lying thereover. An opening to the inside of cover 41 covered by a flap 46 is situated between the broken lines 53 and 54. The top mattress can hereby be placed along two sides in the cover, which greatly simplifies placing of the top mattress in the cover. The indicated locations of lines 51, 52, 53, 54 is wholly random and not shown to scale. Depending on the practical convenience of placing of the top mattress in the cover, the position of these lines, and thereby the size of opening 55, can be varied freely within the concept of the present invention. The top mattress which can be applied in this cover can be the top mattress as shown in figure 1. A foam layer with an open- cell structure as will be described hereinbelow with ref- erence to figure 7 can however also be added thereto. Such a foam layer provides advantages, as will also be described with reference to figure 7.
In addition to the embodiment shown in Fig. 6, it is possible according to the present invention to provide a casing as described with reference to this figure with means for folding over the mattress for the purpose of fastening to the mattress the casing and the top mattress situated therein. Such means can therefore function here in practice as a fitted sheet with for instance an elastic band. Both functionalities of the two embodiments are here combined.
Figure 7 shows a further preferred embodiment according to the present invention. This embodiment relates to a mattress 60 which is provided with a central core 64 of a foam material. Although use is made in this shown embodiment of a foam material, a different mattress core is however also possible, such as a mattress core comprising an inner spring construction and/or a pocket spring construction. A three-dimensional layer 65 is situated on the top and bottom side of the foam core. A further foam layer 63 is situated on either side of the three-dimensional layers 65. This further foam layer 63 is an open-cell foam such as an open-cell polyether. This open-cell polyether can further be treated by means of a reticulation process. Further foam types which can be reticulated include poly- urethane foam and/or for instance PE foam. A mattress cover 61 is situated around the whole. An object of the present embodiment is to provide a mattress with high comfort, for instance through an improved moisture discharge and/or distribution. Further advantages are that the reclining characteristics are im- proved compared to a mattress with a three-dimensional structure layer on the surface. The open-cell nature of the foam layer makes it possible to achieve this object of improved reclining on a three-dimensional material while at the same time retaining the improved ventilation char- acteristics of the three-dimensional material, since the open-cell structure is fully moisture-permeable. A further advantage is that heat is distributed rapidly in the foam layer. An additional application of an open-cell foam layer at the position of the middle of the central mat- tress body 64 provides the additional advantage that moisture can be discharged in simple manner from the core of the mattress. A useful example of the foam material that can be applied as open-cell material has for instance a specific weight of 28 kg/m.3, a tensile strength of 100 kPa, an elongation at break of 100%, a permanent change in form of 4%, a hardness of 3 kPa (CLD 40/4) and/or 5 cells per centimetre. The skilled person can vary such specifications within the range of available open-cell foam types as required within the concept of the present invention. Further ventilation-improving measures that can be applied in a mattress according to the present invention relate to horizontal channels 66 arranged in the central foam body. The central foam body can further be provided with connecting cuts 67 connecting the horizontal channels to the three-dimensional structure of layers 65. Air can move through such channels 66 while carrying away moisture and heat. It is further possible to provide vertical connecting channels 68 for the purpose of mutually connecting the lower and the upper 3-D structures 65. Moisture and/or heat can hereby be displaced in vertical direction. This embodiment of figure 7 shows that a 3-D structure and an open-cell foam layer are arranged on both the top and the bottom side of the mattress. It is likewise possible to apply such an arrangement on only one side of the mattress, wherein the user can choose which side of the mattress is used as top side.
The present invention is described in the foregoing on the basis of several preferred embodiments. Different aspects of different embodiments are deemed as described in combination with each other, wherein all combi- nations which can be made by a skilled person on the basis of this document should be included. These preferred embodiments are not limitative for the scope of protection of this text. The rights sought are defined in the appended claims .
