Abstract

Disclosed is a heterogeneous gem and method of setting the same, in which two or more artificial and/or natural gems are combined in a manner such that a gem is adhered into the outer surface of another gem. The heterogeneous gem includes a first gem formed with a holder hollowed out from part of a front surface thereof, and a second gem formed to have a relatively small size compared to the first gem, having a pavilion thereof held in and adhered into the holder, and having a table thereof oriented in the same direction as the front surface of the first gem. The method comprises the steps of hollowing out part of the front surface of a first gem to form a holder, applying an ultraviolet curable adhesive onto the surface of the holder of the first gem, holding a pavilion of a second gem in the holder, and applying ultraviolet rays to the ultraviolet curable adhesive and adhering the holder of the first gem and the pavilion of the second gem. As a result, different gems having different colors, light transmission, and reflection angles are integrally formed, so that it is possible not only to preserve the feeling of the intrinsic luster and color of each gem, but also to naturally produce interference luster and color between the two gems, to thus realize unusual beauty.

Description
SETTED DIFFERENT KIND JEWEL AND SETTING METHOD OF THE DIFFERENT KIND JEWEL
Technical Field
[1] The present invention relates, in general, to a heterogeneous gem and method of producing the same, in which two or more artificial and/or natural gems are combined in such a manner that a gem is adhered to the outer surface of another gem to thereby integrally forming heterogeneous gems having different colors, optical transmission, and angles of reflection, thereby naturally bringing out the intrinsic brilliance and color of each gem. Background Art
[2] Recently, various demands of customers have been satisfied by a method of combining different gems (i.e. producing a heterogeneous gem) so as to display the intrinsic brilliance and color of various gems.
[3] Such a method is disclosed in Korean Patent Nos. 10-0412955 and 10-0477614.
[4] As described in these documents, a recess is made in a transparent outer gem, and then an inner gem is inserted into the recess. However, the intrinsic brilliance and color of the inner gem are obscured by the outer gem. Hence, it is difficult to feel the effect of the combination of two gems, that is, to appreciate their original properties, brilliance and colors, by means of combination of two different gems, and produce specific brilliance by means of the interference of light in two gems.
[5] Further, one of the documents is directed to inserting the inner gem into the outer gem by cutting the outer gem, making a recess in at least one of the cut outer gems, inserting the inner gem into the recess, and adhering the pieces of the cut outer gem. The other document is directed to inserting the inner gem into the outer gem by making the recess in the outer gem, inserting the inner gem into the recess, and covering the recess with the outer gem.
[6] However, the conventional methods incur a lot of cost, effort and time due to the process of cutting the outer gem and the process of adhering the cut outer pieces of gem. Further, the outer gem has wide cut and adhesion surfaces, and a resulting high defective percentage. Disclosure of Invention
Technical Problem
[7] Accordingly, the present invention has been made keeping in mind the above problems occurring in the prior art, and an object of the present invention is to provide a heterogeneous gem and method of producing the same, in which a holder is formed in the outer surface of a first gem (outer gem), and has a second gem (inner gem) adher ed therein, and thus different gems having different colors, light transmission, and reflection angles are integrally formed, thereby preserving the feeling of intrinsic luster and color of each gem as well as naturally producing interference luster and color between the two gems, so as to realize unusual beauty. Technical Solution
[8] In order to accomplish the above object, according to an aspect of the present invention, there is provided a heterogeneous gem, which includes a first gem formed with a holder hollowed out from part of a front surface thereof, and a second gem formed to have a relatively small size compared to the first gem, having a pavilion thereof held by and adhered into the holder, and having a table thereof oriented in the same direction as the front surface of the first gem.
[9] Here, the first and second gems may be adhered using an ultraviolet curable adhesive.
[10] Further, the holder may be additionally formed with a girdle facet on an upper portion thereof.
[11] In addition, the first gem may include any one selected from [ruby, sapphire,] quartz, emerald, topaz, tourmaline, spiel and opal, and the second gem may include any one selected from diamond and corundum.
[12] According to another aspect of the present invention, there is provided a method of producing a heterogeneous gem. The method comprises the steps of hollowing out part of a front surface of a first gem to form a holder, applying an ultraviolet curable adhesive onto the surface of the holder of the first gem, placing a pavilion of a second gem into the holder, and applying ultraviolet rays to the ultraviolet curable adhesive and adhering the holder of the first gem and the pavilion of the second gem.
[13] Here, the holder may be additionally formed with a girdle facet on an upper portion thereof.
[14] Further, the first gem may include any one selected from [ruby, sapphire,] quartz, emerald, topaz, tourmaline, spiel and opal, and the second gem may include any one selected from diamond and corundum.
Advantageous Effects
[15] According to the present invention, the outer surface of the outer gem is formed with the holder, into which a the inner gem is adhered, and thus the different gems having different colors, light transmission, and reflection angles are integrally formed, so that it is possible to preserve the feeling of the intrinsic luster and color of each gem, as well as naturally produce interference luster and color between the two gems to realize unusual beauty. [21] As illustrated, the present invention is directed to combine different kinds of gems, which include a first gem 100 and a second gem 200.
[22] The first and second gems 100 and 200 are either artificial gems or natural gems.
The first and second gems 100 and 200 are an artificial gem and a natural gem, respectively. In general, in comparison of the first gem 100 and the second gem 200, the second gem 200, which is relatively small and expensive, is combined with the first gem 100, which is relatively large and inexpensive. As a result, a heterogeneous gem is obtained.
[23] For example, the first gem 100 includes [ruby, sapphire,] quartz, emerald, topaz, tourmaline, spiel, opal, and so on, and the second gem 200 includes diamond, and corundum such as ruby and sapphire.
[24] The first gem 100 is formed with a holder 110, which is a recess hollowing out part of its front surface in a desired shape. The shape of the holder 110 is formed to correspond to the shape of the pavilion of the second gem 200. According to the extent of protrusion from the first gem 100, the depth and side shape of the holder 110 are formed to correspond to the depth and shape of the pavilion of the second gem 200. Thereby, the second gem 200 is held in the holder 110 of the first gem 100. Further, the holder 110 may be additionally formed with a girdle seat 111, which has a vertical flat inner surface on an upper portion thereof, thus allowing the girdle thickness of the second gem 200 to be stably held. [25] Alternatively, a plurality of second gems 200 may be held in the first gem 100. To this end, the holders 110 may be formed in the same number as the plurality of second gems 200.
[26] The second gem 200 is preferably held in the holder 110 such that the table of the second gem 200 is oriented in the same direction as the front facet of the first gem 100. In general, when the gem is cut, the cut facets are formed at various angles in order to maximize the transmission and reflection of light. The front facet of the first gem 100 refers to a facet parallel to the table of the cut facets.
[27] Thus, on the basis of the cut facets of the first gem 100, the plurality of second gems 200 can be combined. The plurality of second gems 200 can be combined into the crown facets of the first gem 100 when viewed from the front of the first gem 100.
[28] Here, the first gem 100 and the second gem 200 are preferably adhered using an ultraviolet (UV) curable adhesive.
[29] The UV curable adhesive exerts a strong adhesive force by means of hardening when is exposed to ultraviolet rays, and makes use of a mixture of polyurethane oligomer and acryl oligomer. Because this UV curable adhesive has both excellent transmittance and strong adhesive force, it has hardly any influence on the color and luster of the gem when used for adhering the gem. Further, the UV curable adhesive has a very rapid hardening speed, much faster than ordinary thermosetting adhesive.
[30] The pavilion of the second gem 200 is adhered into the holder of the first gem 100 by means of the UV curable adhesive, and thus the table of the second gem 200 is exposed toward the front surface of the first gem 100. The reflected light of the first gem 100 causes interference with transmitted light that passes intact through the first gem 100 from the bottom of the first gem 100, and thereby beauty that cannot be found in a single gem is realized.
[31] For the purpose of producing this heterogeneous gem, first, part of the front surface of the first gem 100 is hollowed out to form the holder 110. The UV curable adhesive is applied on the surface of the holder 110 of the first gem 100, and then the pavilion of the second gem 200 is inserted into the holder 110.
[32] Then, UV rays are applied to the first and second gems 100 and 200, and thereby the UV curable adhesive is hardened. Therefore, the holder of the first gem 100 and the pavilion of the second gem 200 are adhered to each other. As a result, the front surfaces of two different gems are exposed to the outside unchanged, so that the heterogeneous gem produces excellent luster and color, and interference luster and color. [33] As described above, the present invention provides a heterogeneous gem and method of setting the same, in which a holder is formed in the outer surface of a first gem, and has a second gem adhered therein, and thus different gems having different colors, light transmission, and reflection angles are integrally formed, thereby preserving the feeling of the intrinsic luster and color of each gem as well as naturally producing interference luster and color between two gems to thus realize unusual beauty.
[34] Although the preferred embodiment of the present invention has been disclosed for illustrative purposes, those skilled in the art will appreciate that various modifications, additions and substitutions are possible, without departing from the scope and spirit of the invention as disclosed in the accompanying claims.

Claims

Claims
[1] A heterogeneous gem, comprising: a first gem formed with a holder hollowed out from part of a front surface thereof; and a second gem formed to have a relatively small size compared to the first gem, having a pavilion thereof held by and adhered into the holder, and having a table thereof oriented in the same direction as the front surface of the first gem. [2] The heterogeneous gem according to claim 1, wherein the first and second gems are adhered using an ultraviolet curable adhesive. [3] The heterogeneous gem according to claim 1, wherein the holder is additionally formed with a girdle facet on an upper portion thereof. [4] The heterogeneous gem according to any one of claims 1, 2 and 3, wherein the first gem includes any one selected from [ruby, sapphire,] quartz, emerald, topaz, tourmaline, spiel and opal, and the second gem includes any one selected from diamond and corundum. [5] A method of producing a heterogeneous gem, the method comprising the steps of: hollowing out part of a front surface of a first gem to form a holder; applying an ultraviolet curable adhesive onto a surface of the holder of the first gem; holding a pavilion of a second gem in the holder; and applying ultraviolet rays to the ultraviolet curable adhesive and adhering the holder of the first gem to the pavilion of the second gem. [6] The method according to claim 5, wherein the holder is additionally formed with a girdle facet on an upper portion thereof. [7] The method according to claim 5 or 6, wherein the first gem includes any one selected from [ruby, sapphire,] quartz, emerald, topaz, tourmaline, spiel and opal, and the second gem includes any one selected from diamond and corundum.
