Description

SYSTEM FOR PROVIDING SUB-PICTURE FUNCTIONING AS SUBTITLE, METHOD THEREFOR, SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR PLAYING SUB-PICTURE
TECHNICAL FIELD The present invention relates to a system and a method for providing a sub- picture, which is added to video information, functioning as a subtitle and to a system and a method for reproducing the provided sub-picture.
BACKGROUND ART Recently, services for providing different kinds of video such as movies and documentaries to various wired and wireless terminals such as computer terminals, digital TVs, and cellular phones have increased owing to the development of telecommunications technology.
The video may be provided by a Video On Demand (VOD) method in which a user can directly select a title of the video and time for reproducing the video or by an Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) method in which video is simultaneously transmitted to connected users at a time.
Generally, in reproducing video such as a movie or a documentary, subtitles are used for providing translated contents including scripts of actors, narrations of a narrator, or video related information to viewers.
Generally, the subtitles are produced as a text file, which is different from a file storing the video, and transmitted together with the file storing the video, although the subtitles can be included in the video that is to be transmitted.
However, when the subtitles are transmitted in a text file, there may be a problem in that the displayed subtitles are broken and thus, illegible when the format of the subtitles including a language, a font, and the like are not supported by an operating system installed on a wired or wireless terminal receiving and outputting the video and the subtitles.
A company can provide various services including a worldwide video service without having a local office for each country owing to the development of the Internet. However, when the subtitles are provided in the text file, there may be a problem in displaying the subtitles, since the language, the font, etc. which are mainly supported by the user's wired or wireless terminal used in each country such as a computer, a cellular i phone, or a digital TV are different for each country.
In addition, in a system providing video, the subtitles are generally provided together with the video, and in such a case, when the video is provided simultaneously to people using different languages, there is a problem in that the video service provider is not able to produce the subtitles for all the languages.

DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS FIG. 1 illustrates a block diagram of a reproducing system for video and a sub- picture and total systems according to an embodiment of the present invention.
FIG. 2 is a flowchart illustrating a reproducing method of an image and a sub- picture according to an embodiment of the present invention.
FIG. 3 illustrates a block diagram of a sub-picture providing system according to an embodiment of the present invention.
FIG. 4 is a flowchart illustrating a method of providing the sub-picture using the sub-picture providing system according to an embodiment of the present invention.
BEST MODE FIG. 1 is a block diagram illustrating a reproducing system 100 for video and a sub-picture and total systems according to an embodiment of the present invention.
The reproducing system 100 includes a video output unit 110 and a sub-picture output unit 120. The video output unit 110 connects to a video information providing system 200, receives video a user wants to watch from the video information providing system 200, and outputs the video the user wants to watch on the screen of the video output unit 110. A function performed in the video output unit 110 is similar to a function performed by a conventional reproducing system for outputting video on demand (VOD), so explanation in detail of the function will be omitted.
The sub-picture output unit 120 connects to a sub-picture providing system 300 that is configured as a separate system different from the video information providing system 200, receives a sub-picture corresponding to the video output by the video output unit 110, and outputs the sub-picture in synchronization with the video output by the video output unit 110.
The sub-picture according to the present invention is provided from the sub- picture providing system 300 to function as a subtitle and includes a subtitle in an image format including *.bmp, *.jpg, *.gif, etc., which is different from a conventional subtitle having a text format.
According to an embodiment of the present invention, a file in an image format, rather than in a text format, can function as a subtitle, so that conventional problems including a problem in that characters may be broken to be illegible depending on the operating system of a terminal of a user, etc. can be solved. In addition, a music note, an emoticon, and a picture that cannot be represented in the conventional text file can be used in a subtitle.
In the sub-picture provided by the sub-picture providing system 300 according to an embodiment of the present invention, an image that is added to the video output from the video output unit 110 functioning as a subtitle and a synchronization signal indicating time for output is included.
In the present embodiment, the synchronization signal indicating time can be inserted in various formats. For example, time codes of beginning and ending points of a corresponding output image from among time codes indicating time when each screen of the corresponding video is output may be used as the synchronization signal for each image.
The sub-picture output unit 120 stores an address of the sub-picture providing system 300 providing sub-pictures to the sub-picture output unit 120. Accordingly, the sub-picture output unit 120 can connect to the sub-picture providing system 300 using the stored address in the sub-picture output unit 120 and receive the sub-picture corresponding to the video transmitted when the video is received from the video information providing system 200. Alternatively, the sub-picture output unit 120 may receive address information on the sub-picture providing system 300, which is storing the sub-picture of the video transmitted from the video information providing system 200, from the video information providing system 200 or a separate system providing address information on the sub- picture providing system 300 and connect to the sub-picture providing system 300 using the received address information.
One sub-picture providing system 300 may provide sub-pictures in all languages. Alternatively, the sub-picture providing system 300 may provide sub-pictures in only one or some languages and sub-pictures in other languages may be provided by a different sub-picture providing system 300. For example, for a movie A, a translation in Korean may be provided by a sub- picture providing system 300 a, a translation in Japanese may be provided by a sub- picture providing system 300 b, and a translation in Chinese may be provided by a sub- picture providing system 300 c.
In this case, the sub-picture output unit 120 may have stored all the address information on the sub-picture providing systems 300 a, 300 b, and 300 c.
Alternatively, the sub-picture output unit 120 may receive all the addresses of the sub- picture providing systems 300 a, 300 b, and 300 c from the video information providing system 200 or a separate system for providing the address information on the sub- picture providing systems 300 a, 300 b, and 300 c, connect to the sub-picture providing system 300 that provides the sub-picture in the corresponding language to the language selected by a user, and receive the sub-picture from the sub-picture providing system 300.
Alternatively, the sub-picture output unit 120 may receive a language selection from a user, receive an address of a sub-picture providing system 300 that provides sub-pictures in the corresponding language from the video information providing system 200 or a separate system for providing the address information on the sub-picture providing system 300, connect to the corresponding sub-picture providing system 300 using the address of the sub-picture providing system 300, and request and receive the sub-picture in the corresponding language.
By using the methods explained above, there is an advantage in that the video information providing system 200 can provide worldwide service without translation performed in the video information providing system 200 by linking with the sub-picture providing system 300 that provides sub-titles in each language.
The reproducing system 100 according to an embodiment of the present invention receives data from two separate systems, which are the video information providing system 200 and the sub-picture providing system 300, accordingly, there is a possibility that data transmitted from one system is not synchronized with data transmitted from the other system due to congestion of networks located in paths through which the data is transmitted and loads of each system.
Conventionally, the amount of data of video information is more than that of the sub-picture information, so there are more cases where the receipt of the video information is delayed than cases where the receipt of the sub-picture is delayed. In this case, there will not be a big problem since the received video cannot be reproduced while waiting for the receipt of the sub-picture, although there will be a case when the reproduction of the video may be delayed while waiting for the receipt of the video information.
However, there may be a case when video cannot be reproduced or video is reproduced without a sub-picture due to a delay of the receipt of the corresponding sub- picture although the video to be output has been already received.
To prevent this case beforehand, the sub-picture output unit 120 according to an embodiment of the present invention may receive a predetermined amount of the sub- picture in advance from the sub-picture providing system 300 and store the predetermined amount of the sub-picture to be output, for example, the amount of the sub-picture to be output after 10 to 15 seconds, after a portion of the sub-picture that is synchronized with the video output by the video output unit 110 is output.
Alternatively, the sub-picture may be received by a method in which the whole sub-picture for one video may be received at once and stored in a random access memory (RAM) or the like, rather than where the sub-picture is received by a streaming method.
In FIG. 1 , screens to which the video output unit 110 outputs and the sub-picture output unit 120 outputs are separately configured, but an embodiment of the present invention is not limited thereto.
When the screens to which the video output unit 110 outputs and the sub-picture output unit 120 outputs are separately configured in a computer monitor, and the screen in the computer monitor is set to be output to a TV screen, etc., only the video is output and the sub-picture functioning as a sub-title is not output, and accordingly there is an advantage in that the above prevents copying of the video and the sub-picture together illegally by outputting the video to the TV screen, etc. and recording of the output video by a VCR, DVD, or the like.
However, the present invention is not limited thereto, and the screen output by the sub-picture output unit 120 may be superposed on the screen output by the video output unit 110. When the screen output by the sub-picture output unit 120 is superposed on the screen output by the video output unit 110 and a background color is set to a transparent color for portions excluding portions having meanings such as letters and the like, the sub-picture can be output without screening the video regardless of the video.
FIG. 2 is a flowchart illustrating a reproducing method of an image and a sub- picture according to an embodiment of the present invention.
At first, a user connects to a homepage of a video service provider using a web browser or the reproducing system 100 and selects a video to watch (201 ). The selection of the video, in operation 201 , is necessary when the video is provided to a computer, a cellular phone, or the like using a VOD method. However, in a case when a predetermined video is provided at a predetermined time such as in an Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) method, etc., the selection of the video, in operation 201 , is not performed. The user selects a language to be output as a sub-picture (202).
After the language is selected, the sub-picture output unit 120 may connect to the sub-picture providing system 300, which provides the sub-picture in the selected language, using the address information stored inside. Alternatively, the sub-picture output unit 120 may receive address information on the sub-picture providing system 300 storing the sub-picture of the selected video from the video information providing system 200 or a separate system providing address information on the sub-picture providing system 300 and connect to the sub-picture providing system 300 using the received address information, as explained before. In a case when the sub-picture output unit 120 receives the address information from the separate system, the sequence between the receiving of the language selection and the receiving of the address information may be changed respectively, as explained above. After the video and the language are selected, the video output unit 110 connects to the video information providing system 200 providing selected video and outputs the corresponding video (203). And the sub-picture output unit 120 connects to the sub-picture providing system 300 providing a sub-picture in the corresponding language, receives the sub-picture, and outputs the received sub-picture in synchronization with the output video (204).
At this time, the sub-picture output unit 120 may receive a predetermined amount of the sub-picture in advance from the sub-picture providing system 300 and store the predetermined amount of the sub-picture to be output after the portion of the sub-picture that is synchronized with the video output by the video output unit 110 is output, as explained above.
FIG. 3 is a block diagram illustrating the sub-picture providing system 300 according to an embodiment of the present invention.
The sub-picture providing system 300 includes a sub-picture generation unit 310, a sub-picture database 320, and a sub-picture transmission unit 330. The sub-picture generation unit 310 is required when the sub-picture is generated in the sub-picture providing system 300. A sub-picture may be generated and provided by a separate system without configuring the sub-picture generation unit 310.
The sub-picture generation unit 310 generates a sub-picture by receiving various information including a text composing of predetermined characters, a music note, an emoticon, a picture, etc., to function as a subtitle, converts the received information into an image, and adds synchronization information to the converted image for synchronization with the video.
The sub-picture database 320 receives and stores the sub-picture generated by the sub-picture generation unit 310 or the separate system that does not configure the sub-picture generation unit 310. When the sub-picture providing system 300 according to an embodiment of the present invention provides sub-pictures in a plurality of languages for the same video, the sub-pictures for the plurality of languages are respectively stored in the sub-picture database 320.
The sub-picture transmission unit 330 receives a connection of the sub-picture output unit 120 and transmits a sub-picture in a requested language from among sub- pictures stored in the sub-picture database 320. FIG. 4 is a flowchart illustrating a method of providing a sub-picture using the sub-picture providing system 300 according to an embodiment of the present invention. At first, the sub-picture generation unit 310 generates a sub-picture by receiving various information including text composed of predetermined characters, a music note, an emoticon, a picture, and the like, converting the received information into an image, and adding synchronization information to the converted image for synchronization with the video (401 ). The generated sub-picture is stored in the sub-picture database 320.
When the sub-picture transmission unit 330 receives information on the video (402) and the information on the language to be used in the sub-picture (403) from the sub-picture output unit 120 of the reproducing system 100, the sub-picture transmission unit 330 extracts a corresponding sub-picture from the sub-picture database 320 (404) and transmits the extracted sub-picture to the connected reproducing system 100 (405).
When the sub-picture transmission unit 330 transmits the sub-picture to the reproducing system 100, the sub-picture transmission unit 330 may transmit to the reproducing system 100 a predetermined amount of the sub-picture to be output after the portion of the sub-picture synchronized with the video output by the video output unit 110 is output, as explained above.
The invention can also be embodied as computer readable codes on a computer readable recording medium. The computer readable recording medium is any data storage device that can store data that can be thereafter read by a computer system. Examples of the computer readable recording medium include read-only memory (ROM), random-access memory (RAM), CD-ROMs, magnetic tapes, floppy disks, optical data storage devices, and carrier waves such as data transmission through the Internet. The computer readable recording medium can also be distributed over network coupled computer systems so that the computer readable code is stored and executed in a distributed fashion.
INDUSTRIAL APPLICABILITY According to the present invention, a subtitle is prevented from being improperly displayed due to a difference in operating systems of each terminal by transmitting a file functioning as a subtitle in an image format. In addition, there is an advantage in that a music note, a picture, etc. along with a letter can be represented as the sub-title.
In addition, it is advantageous to remove a restriction in that a video service provider should produce sub-pictures for all languages for proving a worldwide service by configuring systems providing video information and providing a sub-picture as separate systems.
