Description
Mounting or junction box
The invention relates to a mounting or junction box, comprising a box case and an attachment collar, as well as flexible locking tabs capable of being pushed through an installation hole and being engaged with the rear surface of a building board.
Because of the design and manner of installation thereof, the prior known mounting or junction boxes do not allow for the installation of mounting or junction boxes on previously boarded walls or the installation is particularly inconvenient and requires extra attachment members.
An object of the invention is to provide a novel type of mounting or junction box, enabling an easy installation of the box on previously boarded walls or ceilings manually from the room side.
This object is accomplished by a mounting or junction box of the invention, having the characterizing features presented in the appended claim 1. The dependent claims set forth preferred embodiments for a mounting or junction box of the invention.
One exemplary embodiment of the invention will now be described in more detail with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which
Rg. 1 shows an attachment collar, included in a mounting or junction box of the invention, from various directions as well as in sections D-D and E-E;
Fig. 2 shows a box case (the actual box member), included in a mounting or junction box of the invention, from above and two sides as well as in perspective views from various directions;
Rg. 3 shows a mounting or junction box of the invention, mounted on a building board 11, in a perspective view from an inner side of the building board 11 and in a perspective view from a rear side of the building board 11; and
Hg. 4 shows several mounting or junction boxes of the invention, mounted on a building board 11, in a plan view from the inside surface side as well as in sectional views A-A, B-B and C-C taken therefrom, as well as an enhanced detail G.
The exemplary embodiment shown in the drawings represents a mounting box, but the respective arrangement according to the invention is equally applicable for a junction box.
The illustrated mounting box comprises a box case 2 (the actual box member) and an attachment collar 1 separate therefrom. The attachment collar 1 is first installable manually from the room side in an installation hole formed in a building board 11. Accordingly, the attachment collar 1 carries flexible locking tabs 3, which are capable of being pushed through the installation hole and being engaged with a rear surface of the building board 11. The locking tabs 3 are located on the opposite sides of the attachment collar 1 and provided with inclined surfaces 3a capable of pressing the locking tabs 3 inwards relative to the attachment collar as the attachment collar is being pushed into the installation hole with the inclined surfaces 3a sliding along the rim of the installation hole. Around the attachment collar's 1 mouth are outwardly extending flanges 8, which function as abutments bearing against an inside surface of the building board 11. Once the flanges 8 make a responsive contact with the inside surface of the building board, the locking tabs 3 snap to a locking position in response to a spring force possessed by themselves. If the sizing is tight, a shift of the locking tabs to the locking position can be assisted by manual pressing from inside the locking collar 1.
The box case 2 shown in fig. 2 includes cable lead-throughs 5, which are provided with cable clamps 4 and present in recesses 5 of the box case 2. These recesses 5 are directed from outside inwards and thereby enable pushing a cabled box case 2 into the attachment collar 1 present in an installation hole. In the illustrated embodiment, the recesses 5 are inclined surfaces (inclination about 45°) present between the wall and the bottom and the inclined surfaces have the bottom thereof provided with criss-cross weakening lines or scores 4a with fingers 4 therebetween constituting a cable clamp once a cable has been pushed from outside into the interior of a box case.
The attachment collar 1 and the box case 2 are provided with engagement elements 6, 7 capable of securing the box case to the attachment collar once the box case 2 is in its pushed-in position inside the attachment collar 1. The engagement elements 6, 7 are preferably wells 6 and protrusions 7, snapping within each other once the box case 2 has reached its pushed-in position inside the attachment collar 1. Thus, outwardly extending flanges 9 present around the mouth of the box case 2 also come to bear against the inside surface of the building board 11. Here, the inside surface refers to the room-facing surface of a building board 11 and the rear surface refers to the opposite surface remaining within a wall.
As best shown in figs. 1 and 4, the attachment collars 1 have the external sides thereof provided with joint element 10, 10a, whereby the attachment collars 1 can be coupled alongside each other. The joint elements 10, 10a can be configured e.g. as a dovetail joint, which is connected by displacing attachment collars in axial direction relative to each other. A specific design of the joint 10, 10a enables a contact between adjacent boxes without having to use a separate connecting stub.
The attachment collar's 1 edge, which is to remain within a wall, is provided with cutouts 12, the locations of which coincide with the recesses 5 fitted with the cable clamps 4 once the box case 2 is in its installed position within the attachment collar 1. Thus, cables extending from the box case 2 are unobstructed in lateral directions.
Installation proceeds as follows. First, the attachment collar 1 is inserted to its position in an installation hole. Then, cables presently within a wall structure are pulled through the attachment collar and the cable ends are pushed through the cable clamps 4 into the interior of the box case 2. Once cabled as described, the box case is pushed inside the attachment collar 1.
The cutouts 12 may also be replaced by engagement formations for fixing stub pipes, especially pliable stub pipes, to the attachment collar 1. Thereby, wire installation ducts can be conveniently connected to the attachment collar.
The attachment collar 1 and the box case 2 are circular in their basic design, because the installation hole is also circular for engineering reasons (a ring auger bit is used).
The cable clamps present in the lead-throughs 5 may also be separate bodies, which are fitted around a cable and remain inside the box case 2.
