Generally, a card holder' s photograph is attached to an Identification (ID) card, such as a resident registration card, a driver's license or a passport, and, therefore, whether the ID card holder's face is identical to the photograph of the ID card is verified by comparing them with each other. Such a conventional ID card is manufactured simply by attaching a photograph and then printing characters. Therefore, when a malicious person detaches an original photograph from an ID card and then attaches another person's photograph thereto, or forges printed characters, thereby counterfeiting the ID card, it is impossible to determine whether the ID card is counterfeit, so that the counterfeit ID card may be abused in various kinds of crimes . In order to resolve the problem, various schemes for preventing the counterfeiting and alteration of ID cards have been proposed.

In order to accomplish the above object (s), the present invention provides an apparatus for detecting counterfeit cards, including memory including a counterfeit card detection method database for storing and managing optimal counterfeit card detection methods for respective types of ID cards, a font database for storing and managing patterns for fonts used in the respective ID cards for respective types of ID cards, a reflected wavelength database for storing and managing information about wavelengths reflected from substances constituting surfaces of ID cards for respective types of ID cards, a secret mark database for storing and managing information about secret marks, which are marks printed on surfaces of ID cards and each respond to a specific kind of light, for respective types of ID cards, and a hologram database for storing and managing information about holograms formed on the respective ID cards, a fingerprint recognizer for acquiring the fingerprint image of a card holder, a card inlet into which an ID card is inserted, a camera for capturing an image of the ID card, one or more light sources for providing back light for the camera, and a central control unit for controlling overall operation, wherein the central control unit includes an image acquisition module for acquiring the image of the ID card inserted into the card inlet using the camera, an ID card type determination module for recognizing a character from the image acquired by the image acquisition module and then determining a type of the ID card, and a counterfeit card detection module for reading an optimal counterfeit card detection method from the counterfeit card detection method database based on the type of the ID card determined by the ID card type determination module, and determining whether the ID card is counterfeit using the read optimal counterfeit card detection method.

Referring to FIGS. 1 and 2, the apparatus for detecting counterfeit ID cards according to the present invention includes a central control unit 20 for controlling overall operation, memory 70 for storing a database, a card inlet 22, a display unit 40, a natural light source 50, an UV light source 52, and a camera 60. The central control unit 20 includes an image acquisition module 120, an ID card type determination module 130, and a counterfeit card detection module 140. The respective components are described in detail below.

The image acquisition module 120 is a device for acquiring the image of an ID card inserted into the card inlet 22, and captures the surface of the ID card using the natural light source 50, the UV light source 52 and the camera 60.

For example, although, in the embodiment of the present invention, the types of ID cards, on which counterfeit ID card detection is performed, are described only as a resident registration card and a driver' s license, and counterfeit ID card detection methods are experimental, the types of ID cards can be not only expanded and the construction of a counterfeit ID card detection module can be also modified in various manners depending on the types of ID cards in order to improve the performance of the apparatus . Furthermore, the differences associated with the modifications and applications are understood to be included in the scope of the present invention as disclosed in the accompanying claims .

An apparatus for detecting counterfeit cards, comprising: a counterfeit card detection method database for storing and managing optimal counterfeit card detection methods for respective types of Identification (ID) cards; a central control unit for controlling overall operation; a card inlet into which an ID card is inserted; a camera for capturing an image of the ID card; and a light source for providing back light for the camera; wherein the central control unit comprises : an image acquisition module for acquiring the image of the ID card inserted into the card inlet using the camera; an ID card type determination module for recognizing a character from the image acquired by the image acquisition module and then determining a type of the ID card; and a counterfeit card detection module for reading an optimal counterfeit card detection method from the counterfeit card detection method database based on the type of the ID card determined by the ID card type determination module, and determining whether the ID card is counterfeit using the read optimal counterfeit card detection method.

The apparatus according to claim 1, further comprising a font database for storing and managing patterns of fonts used for respective types of ID cards;
Wherein the counterfeit card detection module comprises an ID card font verification unit for comparing a font of the image of the ID card acquired by the image acquisition unit with a pattern of a corresponding character in the font database, thereby determining whether the ID card is counterfeit.

The apparatus according to claim 1, further comprising a reflected wavelength database for storing and managing information about wavelengths reflected from substances constituting surfaces of ID cards for respective types of ID cards; wherein the counterfeit card detection module comprises a reflected wavelength verification unit for comparing a measured reflected wavelength with corresponding information in the reflected wavelength database and determining whether they are identical to each other, thereby determining whether the ID card is counterfeit.

The apparatus according to claim 1, further comprising a secret mark database for storing and managing information about secret marks, which are marks printed on surfaces of ID cards and each respond to a specific type of light, for respective types of ID cards; wherein the counterfeit card detection module comprises a secret mark verification unit for detecting a secret mark on a surface of the ID card, comparing the detected secret mark with corresponding information in the secret mark database and determining whether they are identical to each other, thereby determining whether the ID card is counterfeit.

The apparatus according to claim 1, further comprising a hologram database for storing and managing information about holograms formed on the respective ID cards; wherein the counterfeit card detection module comprises a hologram verification unit for detecting a hologram formed on each ID card, comparing the detected hologram with a corresponding hologram in the hologram database and determining whether they are identical to each other, thereby determining whether the ID card is counterfeit.

The apparatus according to claim 1, further comprising a fingerprint recognizer for acquiring an image of a fingerprint of an ID card holder; wherein the counterfeit card detection module comprises a fingerprint verification unit for acquiring an image of a fingerprint from an ID card having a printed fingerprint, comparing the image of the fingerprint acquired by the fingerprint recognizer with the image of the fingerprint on the ID card and determining whether they are identical to each other, thereby determining whether the ID card is counterfeit.

The apparatus according to claim 1, further comprising a font database for storing and managing patterns for fonts used in the respective ID cards for respective types of ID cards; a reflected wavelength database for storing and managing information about wavelengths reflected from substances constituting surfaces of ID cards for respective types of ID cards; a secret mark database for storing and managing information about secret marks, which are marks printed on surfaces of ID cards and each respond to a specific kind of light, for respective types of ID cards; a hologram database for storing and managing information about holograms formed on the respective ID cards; and a fingerprint recognizer for acquiring an image for a fingerprint of an ID card holder; wherein the counterfeit card detection module comprises: an ID card font verification unit for comparing a font of the image of the ID card acquired by the image acquisition unit with a pattern of a corresponding character of the font database, thereby determining whether the ID card is counterfeit; a reflected wavelength verification unit for comparing a measured reflected wavelength with corresponding information in the reflected wavelength database and determining whether they are identical to each other, thereby determining whether the ID card is counterfeit; a secret mark verification unit for detecting a secret mark on a surface of the ID card, comparing the detected secret mark with corresponding information in the secret mark database and determining whether they are identical to each other, thereby determining whether the ID card is counterfeit; a hologram verification unit for detecting a hologram formed on each ID card, comparing the detected hologram with a corresponding hologram of the hologram database and determining whether they are identical to each other, thereby determining whether the ID card is counterfeit; and a fingerprint verification unit for acquiring an image of a fingerprint from an ID card having a printed fingerprint, comparing an image of a fingerprint acquired by the fingerprint recognizer with the image of the fingerprint on the ID card and determining whether they are identical to each other, thereby determining whether the ID card is counterfeit.
[Claim 8] The apparatus according to claim 7, wherein the counterfeit card detection unit of the apparatus determines whether the ID card is counterfeit using at least one of the ID card font verification unit, the fingerprint verification unit, and the hologram verification unit when the type of the ID card is determined to be a resident registration card.
[Claim 9]
The apparatus according to claim 7, wherein the counterfeit card detection unit of the apparatus determines whether the ID card is counterfeit using at lease one of the ID card font verification unit, the reflected wavelength verification unit, and, the hologram verification unit if the type of the ID card is determined to be a driver's license.
