Description

A CONNECTOR
The present invention relates to a connector for connecting a parasol to a frame. More particularly, but not exclusively the present invention relates to a connector for connecting a parasol to the frame of a pram or the like, the connector being adapted to be removed with the parasol when not in use.
Connectors for connecting parasols to the frames of prams or the like are known. Such connectors however have a number of drawbacks. Typical known connectors are screwed into engagement with the frame. Such connectors can easily be over-tightened damaging the connector or under-tightening causing the connector to fail during use. Such connectors can be dis-assembled relatively easily which can result in the loss of one or more components. As the components are small such connectors can also be difficult to use by the visually or mobility impaired. Also, as the connector can be difficult to assemble it is typically left on the pram frame when the parasol is removed. The connector can then damage the pram fabric when the pram is folded.
Accordingly, the present invention provides a connector for connecting a parasol to a frame comprising first and second jaws pivotally connected together at a base and adapted to pivot between a closed position in which the jaws grip the frame and an open position in which the jaws release the frame; biassing means for biassing the jaws in the closed position; and at least one receiving means for receiving the parasol.
The connector according to the invention has a number of advantages. The biassing means ensures the jaws grip with the correct pressure ensuring it is not too tight or too loose. There are no small parts which can be lost. It can easily be used by the visually or mobility impaired. As the connector is simple to attach or detach it can be removed with the parasol so eliminating the risk of damaging the pram fabric on folding the pram.
Preferably, the biassing means comprises a spring. Preferably, at least one of the jaws is curved.
The jaws can be adapted to grip a pole, preferably of a pram.
Preferably, the connector can further comprise a cushioning material disposed on the inner gripping surfaces of the jaws.
The connector can further comprise first and second handles connected to the first and second jaws respectively, the handles being arranged on the opposite side of the pivot to the jaws.
The handles can integrally extend from the jaws.
Preferably, the width of the handles narrows towards the pivot.
The receiving means can comprise a rod extending outwardly from one of the jaws. The rod can be threaded.
The receiving means can comprise an aperture in one of the jaws for receiving the parasol. The aperture can be threaded.
The connector can comprise at last two receiving means, one disposed on each jaw.
The first receiving means can comprise a rod and the second receiving means can comprise a recess.
The present invention will now be described by way of example only and not in any limitative sense with reference to the accompanying drawings in which
figure 1 shows in perspective view, a connector according to the invention. Shown in figure 1, in perspective view, is a connector 1 according to the invention. The connector 1 comprises first and second jaws 2, 3 connected together by a pivot 4. The jaws 2, 3 can be pivoted between a closed position as shown and an open position with the jaws 2, 3 apart. A spring 5 biasses the jaws 2, 3 into the closed position.
The two jaws 2, 3 are curved so as to define a substantially oval aperture between them when in the closed position. A cushioning material 6, in this case a foam rubber, is disposed on the inner gripping surfaces of the jaws 2, 3.
A first handle 7 integrally extends from the first jaw 2. A second handle 8 integrally extends from the second jaw 3. The handles 7, 8 are arranged on the opposite side of the pivot 4 to the jaws 2, 3 as shown. By squeezing the handles 7, 8 one can overcome the biassing face of the spring 5 so urging the jaws 2, 3 from a closed to an open position. On releasing the handles 7, 8 the spring 5 urges the jaws 2, 3 to return to the closed position.
Extending from the first jaw 2 is a first receiving means 9 comprising a flat plate 10 having a threaded recess (not shown) therein. Extending from the second jaw 3 is a second receiving means 11. The second receiving means 11 comprises a threaded rod 12 extending outwardly from a plate 13.
In use a parasol is firstly connected to the connector 1. The parasol may comprise a threaded rod extending from the end of the parasol shaft. Such a rod would be screwed into engagement with the recess of the first receiving means 9. Alternatively, the parasol may comprise a threaded recess which extends along the long axis of the parasol shaft. If so the recess would be threaded into engagement with the rod 12 of the second receiving means 11.
The handles 7, 8 of the connector 1 are then squeezed together opening the jaws 2, 3. Once open the connector 1 is moved such that a portion of the frame of the pram lies between the jaws 2, 3. The handles 7, 8 are then released so gripping the frame between the jaws 2, 3. The foam rubber cushioning material 6 prevents the jaws 2, 3 from damaging the frame. It also Increases the friction between the connector 1 and the frame preventing the connector 1 from rotating when in use.
When the parasol is no longer required the handles 7, 8 are squeezed together again and the connector 1 and parasol removed from the frame.
In an alternative embodiment the first and second receiving means 9, 11 are identical.
In an alternative embodiment the connector 1 only comprises one receiving means.
The connector 1 can be used for connection to prams. It can of course be used for connection to other items having frames such as cots, sun loungers and chairs.

1. A connector for connecting a parasol to a frame comprising first and second jaws pivotally connected together at a base and adapted to pivot between a closed position in which the jaws grip the frame and an open position in which the jaws release the frame; biassing means for biassing the jaws in the closed position; and at least one receiving means for receiving the parasol.
2. A connector as claimed in claim 1, wherein the biassing means comprises a spring.
3. A connector as claimed in either of claims 1 or 2, wherein at least one of the jaws is curved.
4. A connector as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 3, wherein the jaws are adapted to grip a pole, preferably of a pram.
5. A connector as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 4, further comprising a cushioning material disposed on the inner gripping surfaces of the jaws.
6. A connector as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 5 further comprising first and second handles connected to the first and second jaws respectively, the handles being arranged on the opposite side of the pivot to the jaws.
7. A connector as claimed in claim 6, wherein the handles integrally extend from the jaws.
8. A connector as claimed in either of claims 6 or 7, wherein the width of the handles narrows towards the pivot. -7-
9. A connector as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 8, wherein the receiving means comprises a rod extending outwardly from one of the jaws.
10. A connector as claimed in claim 9, wherein the rod is threaded.
11. A connector as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 8, wherein the receiving means comprises an aperture in one of the jaws for receiving the parasol.
12. A connector as claimed in claim 11 wherein the aperture is threaded.
13. A connector as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 12, comprising at last two receiving means, one disposed on each jaw.
14. A connector as claimed in claim 13, wherein the first receiving means comprises a rod and the second receiving means comprises a recess.
15. A connector substantially as hereinbefore described.
16. A connector as hereinbefore described with reference to the drawings.
