Abstract
A clamp assembly for securing a first article 32 such as a parasol to a second article such as a frame member of a pushchair 13 has a body 15 comprising a pair of jaws 16, 17 to clamp around the frame member 13, a first connector part 21 mounted, preferably adjustably, on one of the jaws - 17 - and a second connector part 26 mounted on the parasol and being releasably connectable to the first connector part. In the example the two parts latch together in the manner of a plastics buckle. <IMAGE>
Description
Clams Assembly
The invention relates to a clamp assembly for connecting a first article to a second article. The first article can be a canopy, an umbrella, a parasol or the like and the second article can be a child's pushchair, cot or comparable article. The invention also has applicability in the connection of canopies and/or parasols to furniture.
In published European application 444 360 there is described a clamp which is suitable for connecting a parasol to the frame of a pushchair. Of course, that clamp has other applications.
When a first article such as a parasol is connected to a second article such as a child's pushchair, there are certain disadvantages in the clamp of EP 444 360. Once the clamp has been positioned on the second article the position of the first article is effectively limited by means of a flexible mount (without unfastening of the clamp). It is not usually possible to remove the parasol without disconnecting the clamp from the pushchair frame, as could be desirable for storage or transportation. Of course, once the clamp is removed from the pushchair its position and the operative position of the parasol are lost and have to be re-set. This can be time consuming and annoying. It is an object of the present invention to provide a clamp assembly connecting a first article to a second article so the above described disadvantage is reduced or minimised.
The invention provides a clamp assembly for connecting a first article to a second article, having a body capable of engaging in a clamping relationship with the second article, a first connector part secured to the body and a second complementary connector part detachably connected to the first connector part and providing a mounting for the first article.
Desirably the first connector part is adjustably secured to the body, the first connector part can be pivoted relative to the body. The second connector part can be pivottable about a clamping axis of the body. A first connector part can be clamped between a clamping nut and one of two clamp halves making up the body. The two connector parts can be constructed and arranged to provide threaded connection between them. Means are provided whereby the two connector parts are latched together and means are provided on one or other said connector parts enabling such latched connection to be broken for separation of the connector parts.
In a preferred embodiment there can be a socket part which is clamped to the body and the second complementary part can be a plug part providing a mounting for the layer end of a handle of a parasol.
The clamp assembly of the invention the clamp body and its associated first connector part can be attached to an article such as a pushchair and, with a parasol attached the operative an optimum position of the parasol for providing protection for a child in the pushchair can be determined. Thereafter, by separation of the connector parts the parasol can be removed and carried for use as a portable parasol, stored or the like. When the parasol and the second connector part are re-connected to the first connector part, which, together with the clamp has remained on the pushchair the parasol immediately is placed back into its optimum operative position without the need for adjustment of the clamp or its relationship to the pushchair frame.Further, as such manipulation often have to be carried out by persons who are primarily looking after the child in the pushchair and may have other articles to carry and look after the simple plug and socket connection is far simpler than the two handed manipulation which is necessary if the clamp body is to be removed or replaced.
It will be appreciated that similar considerations apply to canopies, umbrellas and parasols and comparably connected articles for use outdoors. In the case of tables outside a hotel or restaurant it is very desirable if such canopies, umbrellas or parasols can be removed at will, for example for storage at night or during winter. Using the clamp assembly of the invention canopies, umbrellas and parasols can be connected to tables furniture or other such articles so as to provide a convenient shade and/or weather protection to users or customers but can be easily and simply removed either in the evening for storage over night or at the end of a week ends business or at the end of the season. In such a case to prevent authorised withdrawal, a key operated locking arrangement could be provided.
The invention will be described further, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein;
Figure 1 is a schematic side elevation illustrating a child's pushchair and an attached parasol;
Figure 2 is a side elevation of a preferred clamp assembly of the invention, being the portion of figure 1 illustrated by II;
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the clamp assembly of the invention with two connected parts thereof separated; and
Figure 4 is an enlarged view illustrating the two connector parts individually in some detail.
Referring now to figure 1 it will be seen how a first article such as the tube (10) of a parasol (11) can be connected by means of a preferred clamp assembly (12) to a frame member (13) of a child's pushchair (14).
The clamp assembly (12) includes a clamp body which is very similar to that described in European 444 360 which is hereby incorporated by reference. The clamp body (15) includes a pair of jaws (16) (17) interconnected by a bolt (not shown) as described in the aforesaid patent application. The clamping is effected by means of a thumb nut (18).
Between the thumb nut (18) and the jaw (17) is sandwiched a first connector part (19) which, as illustrated, has a lower generally semi-cylindrical portion (20) and an upper generally rectangular portion (21). Portion (20) is cylindrical about the axis of the bolt (not shown) of the clamp body which passes through an aperture (22) in the part (19).
The connector part (19) can pivot about the connecting bolt so that its position is movable relative to jaw (17). Part (19) is clamped between thumb nut (18) in a position which is fixed by a grooved rack (23) which co-operates with a complementary annular rack (not shown) on the surface of jaw (17).
The portion (21) of part (19) provides a hollow socket (24) and a second connector part (25) has a plug portion (26) which is complementary to the socket (24) and can engage therein to provide a secure support. The portion (26) has hook members (27) which are resilient. Upon insertion of part (26) into the socket (24) the legs (27) are deformed inwards and engage lips (not shown) inside part (19). The resilient limbs (28) are mounted on the lower end of the part (20) and each at its upper end carries a projection (29). This is designed to remove part (25) from part (19). The user needs to press in the buttons (30) to cause the projections (29) to engage the legs (27) to unlatch them from the part (19) to allow removal.
The second connector part (19) has a spigot (31) which mounts a lower end of a flexible element (32) whose other end (33) connects to the tube (10) of the parasol (11).
It will be appreciated that, in use, the clamp body and the connector part (19) can be positioned on a pushchair frame or any other convenient article and effectively determine the operative position of the parasol, slight adjustment being made possible by use of the flexible connector (32). When it is desired to remove the parasol either for storage or in less bright weather or, for example, when boarding a vehicle or the like the user simply needs to press the button (30) thus unlatching the connector part (25) allowing the parasol to be carried separately. These are straightforward simple operations which can be effected very quickly and simply whilst leaving the position of the parasol in relation to the pushchair effectively unchanged so that when the parasol is needed again it can simply be clipped back onto the chair in the precise position where it was last used.
Of course, the invention is not limited to the precise details of the a foregoing and variations can be made thereto. For example, the plug connection could be connected to the body and the socket connection could be connected to the parasol.
Forms of connection other than plug and socket could be used. For example a conventional type socket could be used or a conical press fit or the one connector part could be connected to the other part. Many other forms of connection could be used.
Of course, the invention is not limited to the connection of the parasol to a pushchair and can be used for connecting umbrellas, canopies, parasols or other items such as light carrying poles, poles for carrying decorations or other items to furniture, tables and chairs or any other structure when a detachable connection is required.
