Definitions

  • the present invention relates to support devices, in particular to support devices used in association with a plunge bath to assist with bathing of children, elderly or the infirm by someone externally of the bath.
  • Support devices to aid in bathing of particular groups of people are available in the art.
  • the main type of support device used is a bath seat such as that described in United States Patent No. 6,457,190.
  • This document also gives a useful summary of the application and the prior art devices in existence, and this summary is reproduced below verbatim.
  • One means for the caregiver to prove support is for the caregiver to continuously hold onto the child during the bathing process. This is usually difficult or a single caregiver to do, as wet, soapy young children tend to be slippery, all the more so if they squirm. Further, it is undesirable for an individual caregiver to have to constantly hold onto a child during bathing, since this leaves only one free hand with which to actually bathe the child. Bathing a child one-handedly increases the likelihood of introducing soapy water into the child's eyes, nose, and/or mouth, causing the child discomfort and actuating even more vigorous squirming.
  • Such devices generally include a support ring or shelf supported by a plurality of support members attached to a base. Examples of such devices are described in U.S. Pat. No. 5,158,460 issued Oct. 27, 1992 to Bernstein et al. and U.S. Pat. No. 5,687,433 issued Nov. 18, 1997 to Garner ct al. These devices typically include suction cups attached to the base to adhere the bath seat to the bathtub while a child seated therein is being bathed.
  • the base portion functions as the seat while the support member's and/or the ring or shelf functions as a front and rear support.
  • the base may have a non-slip surface to prevent the child from sliding within the seat.”
  • the above summary identifies some of the issues when bathing children, particularly those of restraint of the child and fixing the seat relative to the bath effectively. It also identifies other problems such as the non-slip seat surface (in those seats having one) is typically a textured rubber coating which is somewhat uncomfortable against the child's skin and may cause chafing or abrasion if the child squirms vigorously during bathing, hi addition to this, the provision of a seat generally includes some type of restraint for the child. These restraint arrangements can make it difficult to insert, adjust, and remove the child from the seat and do not allow the washer to move the child as they desire in order to efficiently and effectively clean the child.
  • the present invention is directed to a support device which may at least partially overcome at least one of the abovementioned disadvantages or provide the consumer with a useful or commercial choice.
  • the invention resides in a support device for use in association with a plunge bath to assist with bathing of children, elderly or the infirm by a washer externally of the bath, the device including a. a ground engaging portion; b. a support portion adapted to support the washer against the bath; and c. a bathtub engagement portion adapted to allow the device to be removeably secured to a portion of the bathtub with the device located externally to the bathtub.
  • the device of the present invention is adapted to provide support for a washer located externally of the bath when bathing or assisting with the bathing of a person, typically a young child in the bath. Strain is usually placed on a washer's knees and lower back and the device of the present invention is designed to alleviate or reduce this strain by providing additional support.
  • the plunge bath will have a tub-like configuration and generally a plurality of side walls defining a central cavity adapted to hold water.
