Abstract

As a cylindrical print drum including a shaft rotates along with a rotating semiconductor memory printing locations, a print controller requires angular position data in order to properly synchronize the print data to the print drum position. A shaft encoder coupled to the shaft is used to provide the necessary shaft angular displacement/position data to the print controller. In addition, as the print drum rotates, the print controller must provide power and print data to the semiconductor memory circuit located on the outer surface of the rotating print drum. To decoupled the rotating print drum form the stationary print controller, a slip ring assembly is used to provide a mechanical interface between the non-rotating print controller and the rotating cylindrical print drum.
