Abstract

A wireless communication system (100, 200, 300) comprises a wireless local area network (WLAN) operably coupled to a private mobile radio system (160) and arranged such that a wireless communication unit (112, 116) is capable of private mobile communication with the private mobile radio system (160) over the wireless local area network. Preferably, the private mobile radio system is a TETRA system.

Claims

AMENDED CLAIMS received by the International Bureau on 18 September 2006 (18.09.2006)Claims
1. A wireless communication system (100/ 200, 300) comprises a wireless local area network (WLAN) operably coupled to a TErrestrial Trunked RAdio (TETRA) system (160) wherein the wireless communication, system (100, 200, 300) is characterised in that a wireless communication unit (112/ 116) operational in the wireless communication system (100, 200, 300) is capable of TETRA communication with the TETRA. system (160) by encapsulating TETRA protocol messages over the WLAN,
2. A wireless communication system (100, 200, 300) according to Claim 1 wherein the wireless communication unit (112, 116) associates with the WLAN by using a special Service Set IDentifier (SSID) to enable the WLAN to differentiate between the wireless communication unit (112, 116) capable of TETRA communication over the WLAN and a wireless communication unit not capable of TETRA communication over the WLAM.
3. A wireless communication system (100, 200, 300) according to any preceding Claim, wherein the wireless communication system (100, 200, 300) is further characterised in that the WLAW comprises or is operably coupled to a WLAN access gateway (WAG) (142) and an Interworking function (IWF) (150) arranged to interface communication between the WLAN and the TETRA system (160) .
4. A wireless communication system (100, 200, 300) according to Claim 3 further characterised in that the WLAN implements a special routeing enforcement policy for the wireless communication unit (112, 116) to tunnel uplink encapsulated TETRA protocol messages over the WLAN to the IWP 150.
5. A wireless communication system (100, 200, 300) according to any preceding Claim further characterised in that communication between the WLAN and the TETRA system (160) is supported by an adaptation layer (460) interfacing with an User Datagram Protocol (UDP) layer through a Control-Plane-Service Access Point (CP-SAP) (465) and one or more ϋser-Plane-Service Access Points (UP-SAPs) (470) .
6. A wireless communication system (100, 200, 300) according to Claim 5 further characterised in that the adaptation layer is arranged to differentiate between user-plane traffic and call-associated control traffic on the same Service Access Point.
7. A wireless communication system (100, 200, 300) according to Claim 5 or Claim 6 further characterised in that a header of an adaptation layer message comprises a TETRA Short Subscriber Identity (SSl) and/or an Encryption. Mode field where in a downlink direction the TETRA SSI identifies a TETRA recipient of the encapsulated TETRA protocol message, and/or in an uplink direction, where the TETRA SSI identifies a TETRA originator of the encapsulated TETRA protocol message.
8, A wireless communication system (100, 200, 300) according to any of preceding Claims 5 to 7 further characterised in that an adaptation layer message is configured to set up a group call.
9. A wireless communication system (100, 200, 300) according to any of preceding claims 5 to 8 further characterised in that an adaptation layer message comprises an information field to indicate if there is a TETRA logical link control (LLC) packet data unit (PDU) or a real-time protocol (RTP) PDU encapsulated in a received data packet.
10. A method of communicating between a wireless local area network (WLAN) and a TErrestrial Trunked RAdio (TETRA) system (160) by a dual-mode wireless communication unit (112, 116) capable of operating over the WLAN and the TETRA system (160), the method characterised, by the steps of : receiving (725) a message from the dual-mode wireless communication unit (112, 116) requesting an association with the WLAN for TETRA communication; creating (735) a tunnel to route an encapsulated TETRA protocol message to or from the wireless communication unit (112, 116) via the WLAN; assigning (740, 745) an address to route the encapsulated TETRA protocol message to or from the wireless communication unit (112, 116); processing (755, 760, 765) the encapsulated TETRA protocol message transmitted using the address; and routeing packets to or from the wireless communication unit (112, 116) in response to the processing of the encapsulated TETRA protocol message.
