Description

AROMATHERAPY SYSTEM
The present invention relates to dispensers for aromatic substances and, more particular for substances belonging to the class of aromatherapy.
BACKGROUND
Aromatherapy has come to be recognised as providing relief and benefit for a number of ailments. In particular, the inhalation of the aromatic essences available for respiratory ailments has received widespread acceptance . However, the therapeutic properties of such inhalants often require a user to be exposed for relatively lengthy periods . This is frequently neither desirable or practical . It is an object of the present invention to address σr at least ameliorate some of the above disadvantages .
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF INVENTION
Accordingly, in one broad form of the invention there is provided an aromatherapy system comprising a dispenser module containing a volatile therapeutic substance; said dispenser module adapted for adhesive attachment to a surface; said dispenser module comprising a substrate and a permeable cover for retaining said substance therebetween . Preferably, said substrate is attached to said permeable cover by an adhesive border at the periphery of said permeable cover; said permeable cover overlapping said substrate so as to leave a portion of said adhesive border exposed for attachment of said dispenser module to said surface.
Preferably, said surface is the cover of a pillow; said dispenser module so positioned on said cover as to be proximal to the mouth and nose of a resting or sleeping user of said pillow.
Preferably, said adhesive border is protected prior to use by a peel-off protective layer and wherein said dispenser module is retained in a sachet prior to use.
Preferably said surface is a sheet, quilt or the like; said dispenser module , so positioned as to be near to the mouth and nose of a resting or sleeping user of said pillow.
Preferably said surface is associated with a head end of a bed; said dispenser module so positioned as to be near to the mouth and nose of a resting or sleeping user of said bed. In a further broad form of the invention there is provided a method for dispensing an aromatherapeutic substance to a user; said method including the steps of :
(a) providing said substance in a dispenser module;
(b) removing said dispenser module from a sachet;
(c) removing a peel-off protective layer from an adhesive border at an underside of said dispenser module;
(d) attaching said dispenser module to a pillow of said user.
In yet a further broad form, of the invention there is provided a method for dispensing an aromatherapeutic substance to a user; said method including the steps of:
(e) providing said substance in a dispenser module;
(f) attaching said dispenser module to a pillow of said user.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF DRAWINGS
Embodiments of the present invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a preferred embodiment of an aromatherapy dispenser module in use;
Figure 2 is a sectioned side view of the aromatherapy dispenser module of Fig . 1 ; Figure 3 is a plan view of the aromatherapy dispenser module of Figs . 1 and 2 ;
Figure 4 is a view of the underside of the aromatherapy module of Figs . 1 and 2.
Figure 5 is a perspective view of a typical location of the aromatherapy dispenser of Fig. 1 on a pillow.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS
With reference to Fig. 1 an aromatherapy system comprising a dispenser module 10 is shown in use, attached to the pillow 12 of a sleeping or resting person 14. The dispenser module 10 is attached to the pillow 12 in a position where the dispenser module 10 is close to the mouth and nose of the person 14 when lying on his or her, in this example, right side, Although Fig. 1 shows only one dispenser module, a user may attach a module at each side of the pillow so that the inhalants of the exuded by the modules may be inhaled, regardless of the side the user is lying on . Two modules will also confer a greater exposure to those users who prefer to lie on their back. With reference now to Fig. 2, the aromatherapy dispenser module 10 according to the present embodiment of the invention, is comprised of a thin plastic substrate 16. Substrate 16 is preferably, though not necessarily circular. Supported on substrate 16 is a tablet or pad 18 of the therapeutic substance, in dry but volatile form. The diameter of the pad 18 is smaller than that of the underlying plastic substrate 16.
Covering both pad 18 and plastic substrate 16 is permeable cloth layer 20. Cloth layer 20 is an open-weave fabric, such as commonly used for the covering of microphones for example . Cloth layer 20 is of a diameter larger than that of plastic substrate 16 and is provided around its periphery with an annular ring of adhesive 22.. The ring of adhesive 22 is such that it overlaps the periphery of the plastic substrate 16 which is attached to the cloth layer 20 by the adhesive 22. Cloth layer 20 may have additional holes 24 to increase the rate of emission of aroma from the therapeutic pad 18. Prior to use, the aromatic dispenser module 10 is retained in an air-tight plastic sachet (not shown) . Additionally, a thin plastic peel-off layer may be provided to protect the annular ring of adhesive . For use, the dispenser module is removed from the sachet and the protective plastic layer peeled from the adhesive . The dispenser module may then be attached to the surface of a pillow as shown in Fig . 1.
Although the preferred embodiment of the invention has been described particularly in the context of attaching the dispenser module to a pillow so as to benefit from the therapy during a period of sleep or rest, it will be understood that the dispenser module may be attached as desired to any suitable surface, such as the headrest of a car for example, or to some work surface .
It may also be attached to other components associated with the head end of a bed such as the head end of the bed sheets or the head end of blankets , quilts or like coverings . In particular circumstances it may be associated with the head end of a mattress structure .
The above describes only some embodiments of the present invention and modifications, obvious to those skilled in the art, can be made thereto without departing from the scope and spirit of the present invention .
