Abstract

The present invention relates to a composition for suppressing dust formation, at least comprising a first foam-forming anionic surfactant, an amphoteric surfactant, a second anionic surfactant and water. With the composition according to the present invention more dust can be bound with less water. A prolonged dust- suppressing effect is moreover ensured. In addition, the composition according to the invention is fully biodegradable and not harmful to people or the environment.

Description

DUST-SUPPRESSSING COMPOSITION
The present invention relates to a dust-suppressing composition, and a method for suppressing dust formation .
Dust formation is a problem which often occurs in demolition work and in the sorting of building and demolition waste . "Dust" is here understood to mean the particle-like material which is released during the work, taken up in the air and spread.
The released dust particles can be harmful to the persons directly involved in the work. The released dust, and in particular the small particles such as quartz dust, are breathed in and enter the lungs , which can result in serious bronchial disorders . Adverse effects on health, such as silicosis, can for instance occur as a result of prolonged exposure to quartz .
According to present working conditions legislation, the exposure to dust must therefore be limited as much as possible .
In order to prevent dust formation it is known inter alia to spray the relevant material with water . Although this is an environmentally-friendly solution, it provides only a temporary solution . As soon as the water has evaporated, the dust-suppressing effect disappears . Large quantities of water are moreover required, and the water itself can result in damp problems .
It is also known to add one or more additives to the water, such as for instance means which lower the surface tension of the water, so that during spraying smaller droplets are formed and the sprayed surface area becomes larger . An additive on the basis of citrus fruits is for instance known . Due to present-day environmental and working conditions legislation becoming increasingly strict, there is however a continuous demand for improved dust- suppressing compositions and methods .
5 The object of the present invention is to provide an effective dust-suppressing composition wherein the above stated drawbacks are obviated.
This object is achieved with the invention by providing a composition comprising at least a first
10 foam-forming anionic surfactant, an amphoteric surfactant, a second anionic surfactant, and water . With the composition according to the present invention much more dust can be bound with less water . A very stable foam is moreover obtained with application
15 thereof, so that a prolonged dust-suppressing effect is ensured. In addition, the composition according to the invention is fully biodegradable and not harmful to people or the environment . Preservatives are furthermore unnecessary.
20 In a preferred embodiment of the invention an alkene sulphonate is chosen as foam-forming anionic surfactant . A C14-C16 alkene (olefin) sulphate is preferably chosen as foam-forming surfactant . Particularly suitable is for instance Hansanol OS46
25 (Hansa Chemie AG, Duisburg, Germany) .
In a preferred embodiment of the invention the composition comprises 10-50% by weight of the first foam-forming anionic surfactant, preferably 20-40% by weight, on the basis of the active compound.
30 In order to form a particularly effective foam- forming composition, according to the invention this latter further comprises an amphoteric surfactant, preferably an alkyl iminopropionate . A stable foam is
■ ■ hereby obtained, whereby the composition has a sustained
35 dust-suppressing effect (up to about 2 weeks ) . Particularly suitable is for instance sodium laurimino- dipropionate (Mackam™ DP-122, available from Swiftfill in Nuenen) .
In a preferred embodiment of the invention the composition comprises 0.5-20% by weight of the amphoteric surfactant, preferably 0.5-10% by weight, more preferably 0.5-8% by weight .
So as to further prolong the dust-suppressing effect of the composition, the composition according to the invention preferably further comprises a second anionic surfactant . In a preferred embodiment a lignosulphonate is used for this purpose, preferably a sodium lignosulphonate . Examples of such anionic surfactants are, among others, Novibond N50TH (La Rochette Venizel, Venizel, France) .
In a preferred embodiment of the invention the composition comprises 1-40% by weight of the second anionic surfactant , preferably 5-20% by weight, more preferably about 5-10% by weight . In a further preferred embodiment of the invention the composition further also comprises a third anionic surfactant, preferably an alkyl sulphate, more preferably an alkyl ether sulphate . An example hereof is sodium lauryl/myristyl ether sulphate, available for instance under the name Hansanol NS 243 (Hansa Chemie AG, Duisburg, Germany) .
In a preferred embodiment of the invention the composition comprises 1-40% by weight of the third anionic surfactant, preferably 5-25% by weight, more preferably about 10-20% by weight .
With the composition according to the present invention about 50 litres of foam can be obtained with one litre of water comprising 1% of the composition (concentrate) according to the invention . The foam can then be arranged on the material before processing, after which an operation takes place, for instance sieving, reducing wood in size, reducing iron in size, breaking rubble, paper processing etc . During processing the dust is absorbed by the composition according to the invention, whereby sieving and sorting can take place without dust . The composition can also be applied during processing.
It will be understood that the dust-suppressing composition according to the invention can be used for any other material and application where dust formation forms a problem for people and/or the environment .
The composition according to the invention can take diverse forms . In a preferred embodiment of the invention the composition is in the form of a concentrate which must be diluted with a diluent, such as for instance water, before use of the composition. In a preferred embodiment of the invention 1 litre of concentrate is used to 100 litres of water . The composition can further be provided in already diluted form or in solid form.
The invention further relates to a method for suppressing dust formation, comprising of bringing a dust-producing material into contact with a composition as described above . The material can herein be brought into contact with the composition in diverse ways such as are known to the skilled person .

Claims

1. Composition for suppressing dust formation, comprising a first foam-forming anionic surfactant, an amphoteric surfactant, and one or more other anionic surfactants in water .
2. Composition as claimed in claim 1 , characterized in that the foam-forming anionic surfactant is an alkene sulphate .
3. Composition as claimed in claim 1 or 2 , characterized in that the foam-forming anionic surfactant is C14-C16 alkene (olefin) sulphate .
4. Composition as claimed in claim 1, 2 or 3, characterized in that the quantity of foam-forming anionic surfactant amounts to 10-50% by weight .
5. Composition as claimed in claim 4 , characterized in that the quantity amounts to 20-40% by weight .
6. Composition as claimed in any of the claims 1-5 , characterized in that the amphoteric surfactant is an alkyl iminopropionate .
7. Composition as claimed in claim 6, characterized in that the amphoteric surfactant is sodium laurimino- dipropionate .
8. Composition as claimed in any of the claims 1-7, characterized in that the quantity of amphoteric surfactant amounts to 0.5-20% by weight .
9. Composition as claimed in claim 8 , characterized in that the quantity amounts to 0.5-10% by weight .
10. Composition as claimed in claim 9, characterized in that the quantity amounts to 0.5-8% by weight .
11. Composition as claimed in any of the claims 1- 10, characterized in that it comprises a lignosulphonate as second anionic surfactant .
12. Composition as claimed in claim 11 , characterized in that the anionic surfactant is a sodium lignosulphonate .
13. Composition as claimed in any of the claims 1- 12 , characterized in that the quantity of the second anionic surfactant amounts to 1-40% by weight .
14. Composition as claimed in claim 13, characterized in that the quantity amounts to 5-20% by weight .
15. Composition as claimed in claim 14 , characterized in that the quantity amounts to 5-10% by weight .
16. Composition as claimed in any of the claims 1- 15, characterized in that it comprises a third anionic surfactant .
17. Composition as claimed in claim 16, characterized in that the third anionic surfactant is an alkyl sulphate .
18. Composition as claimed in claim 16 or 17 , characterized in that the third anionic surfactant is an alkyl ether sulphate .
19. Composition as claimed in claim 16, 17 or 18 , characterized in that the third anionic surfactant is sodium lauryl/myristyl ether sulphate .
20. Composition as claimed in any of the claims 1- 19, characterized in that the quantity of the third anionic surfactant amounts to 1-40% by weight .
21. Composition as claimed in claim 20 , characterized in that the quantity amounts to 5-25% by weight .
22. Composition as claimed in claim 21, characterized in that the quantity amounts to 10-20% by
" weight .
23. Composition as claimed in any of the claims 1- 22, characterized in that the composition is a concentrate .
24. Composition as claimed in claim 23, characterized in that for application purposes 1 litre of the concentrate is diluted with 100 litres of water .
25. Method for suppressing dust formation, comprising of bringing a dust-producing material into contact with a composition as claimed in any of the claims 1-24.
