Description

Flat device of plastic foam, suitable for a variety of purposes, with radial, internal arched cuts made right through the material
The invention concerns flat devices of plastic foam material adaptable to various purposes.
Subject of the present invention is a device essentially consisting of a flat piece of constant thickness, made of plastic foam through which a number of cuts are made at set distances, these cuts being substantially radial, arched in shape, extending, at a reciprocally increasing distance, to join a first central circular area to a second area, concentric to the first but of greater dimensions. The effect of these cuts is to form curved triangular component parts the bases of which lie close to the edge of the device and with the narrower sections close to its central part, said components being set close together or spaced apart in a step-wise manner forming, as preferred, a compact discoid or stair-like structure, suitable for making a bowl or bag, of maximum flexibility and therefore maximum adaptability to the needs of persons for their greater comfort or for protecting objects against shocks, shaking or loss, while also providing ample space for commercial messages. According to how it is made the device may be discoid or square, octagonal or polygonal in general. In one type of execution the plastic foam material is flexible.
In this case the device may serve as a cushion to be laid on flat surfaces such as chair seats, tiers of seating, and others of the same kind. In another type of execution the device may be used for dining purposes as a tray or base generally on which to lay out various articles of consumption. The device may also be used as a kind of headwear, the curved triangular components created by the cuts forming a rounded cage-like covering, the circular edge acting as the peak of a cap, the whole being adaptable to different head sizes.
The device can also be employed in the game known as Frisbee. By superimposing the two edges at one diameter, the device can assume the form of a handbag, the curved triangular components creating a kind of net to carry a variety of obj ects.
In one type of execution the plastic foam is semi-rigid in which case the device can form a fruit-bowl or the like, exploiting the stability created between one "step" and the next formed by the curved triangular components, due to their being partially superimposed or to friction between the walls created by the cuts.
The disclosure offers evident advantages.
Using a suitable material, by means of the arched cuts made through it, from the central circular part outwards to the edge, a variety of highly original shapes can be created to suit a similar number of purposes: for more comfortable seating, to protect the head, as a container for commodities for the table, for carrying various articles, for playing games particularly Frisbee.
Its extremely low cost, original shape and flat surrounding edge, particularly when the form is circular, make it an ideal medium for publicity messages such the name of a product or for some commercial description.
The proceeds obtainable by advertising on widely used articles such as cushions for stadium seating, trays for food or drinks and endless other purposes, enable it to be distributed as a gift article, the cost being amply covered by its advertising value. From the serviceable aspect, its light weight added to the practically endless number of shapes it can assume, make it possible to realize a useful and even decorative article, highly profitable and easy to sell. Characteristics and purposes of the disclosure will be made still clearer by the following examples of its execution illustrated by diagrammatically drawn figures.

Fig. 13 Device, subject of the invention, of semi-rigid plastic foam, used to make a fruit bowl, side view.
Fig. 14 Device as above, orthogonal view. The device subject of the invention essentially consists (Figures 1-14) of a flat element, of constant thickness, made of plastic foam, through which a series of substantially radial cuts are made arch-wise at a constant distance, extending to join a first central circular area to a second circular area concentric to the first but of greater dimensions, forming arched triangular pieces the bases of which lie on the second area and whose narrower sections extend to the first area.
Figures 1 and 2 show a disc- shaped device 10 of plastic foam material. Starting from the central geometric circle 11, cuts 12 are made through the material, these being equal, arched and extending as far as a geometric circle 13, concentric to the first but of a greater diameter.
The cuts 12 produce substantially triangular curved parts 16 with sides 18, bases 19 and narrower sections 20 interposed between the concentric geometrical circles 11 and 13.
Figures 3 and 4 show a device 25 substantially equal to the device 10, but differing in that its shape is square.
Figures 5 and 6 show the device 30 substantially equal to those described but octagonal in shape.
Figure 7 illustrates three discs 41, 42, 43, for convenient arrangement of articles used in consumption of food, such as plates 45 and glasses 46.
At any point on the surrounding areas of these discs 41-43 messages 50 can be written for publicising drinks or some other product. Figure 8 shows the disc 60 used as the cushion for a seat 62.
Figure 9 illustrates the use of the invented device, when square in shape, as a cushion 65 for tier seating 70 in a stadium.
Figure 10 shows the device when used as a decorative and useful form of headwear 80. In this case the edge 81 acts as a the peak of a cap, especially protective for the eyes, the central part 82 automatically fitting any shape or size of head
83 due to the flexibility of the triangular parts 85 with their bases 87 and narrower sections 89.
Figure 11 shows a person 91 playing a game of Frisbee by throwing the device 94.
Figure 12 illustrates the use of the device as a handbag 100 able to carry . even fragile objects 102. The handbag is made by folding the disc 104 substantially along one diameter 106 and using the matching edges 108 and
110 as a kind of carrying handle. It is also possible to create a type of net, the bottom 114 being joined to the curved triangular parts 116 and 118 by the wider parts 120 and narrower parts 121, between which said objects 102 can be seen. The fingers can easily take a firm grip on the edges 108, 110 while the thick but soft material, used to make the device, ensures safe carriage for the objects 102 inside the bag.
Figures 13 and 14 show the device 122 made to form a disc 124 of semi- rigid plastic material shaped into a table bowl to contain fruit, for example. The bottom 126, enlarged if necessary by the narrower sections 132 of the triangular curved elements, 127, 128, 129, according to the quantity of product 144 to be contained, ensures sufficient stability while the bottom 130 of the wider sections of said triangular elements join up with the continuous surrounding edge 134.
The semi-rigid material also ensures stability of the intermediate section between the bottom 126 and the edge 134 wherein partial superimposition, such as 140 and 141, is made between each triangular element, such as 127 128 and 129, or in any case a degree of friction is created sufficient for stabilizing each "step" with the one below it.
In other words a kind of "stair" is formed, each "step" 127, 128, 129 being curved and triangular so producing a concave shape to form an original and effective container for fruit 144, bread or some other commodity. All the examples illustrated in Figures 1, 2, 7-14 show the device when given a circular shape but in each case, for practical or aesthetic reasons, different degrees of thickness or different forms can be adopted, such as a square, an octagon or any other preferred.
