Abstract

Refrigeration units having flooded evaporators and methods of their operation that include the steps of varying an effective surface area of the evaporator (11) to control a heat load on the evaporator, wherein the effective surface area is wetted by a liquid refrigerant. Varying the effective surface area of the flooded evaporator (11) may include monitoring a temperature, a level, and/or a pressure of the refrigerant in the evaporator and adjusting a flow rate of the liquid refrigerant into the evaporator to change the temperature, level and/ or pressure to a desired value. Additional steps may include varying a desired heat load to the evaporator as a function of a present capacity of the compressor (12) and/or varying the capacity of the compressor as a function of a presently available power. The refrigeration unit includes means for varying an effective surface area of the evaporator to control a heat load on the evaporator.
