Definitions
- the present invention relates to a two-part or three-part adjustable fastening system for bras and other type of garments. More specifically the invention relates to a simplified adjusting and fastening system for instant sizing and re-sizing of the cir ⁇ cumference of bras and items of apparel.
- Bras are garments worn by women to cover and/or support their breasts.
- bras consist of a front part to cover the breast, a part that extends around the back and shoulder straps connecting the front and rear parts so the front portion can better support the breast.
- Either the rear part or front part are usually joined in the center by a fastening system that includes one or more pairs of small hooks and eyes formed of wound wires.
- bras need to be adjustable are in principle fourfold : 1. It eliminates the need for the manufacturer to produce different sizes per 1 cm. Integrating an adjusting system he can skip sizes and produce them with an interval of 5 cm ( e.g. 70 - 75 -80 ). The difference is generally made up by 3 rows of 2 or more hooks and receiving eyes. 2. Bras are made of fabric and although most of the time made out of stretchable material, they shrink - over time and the hooks and eyes will make up for the difference. 3. The same when the fabric overstretches, again depending on the case, the hooks and eyes can make up the difference. 4. Women are living bodies and depending on the time of day or month the normal position of the hooks and eyes need to be changed to give added comfort.
- a traditional hooks and eyes system typically consists of 2 hooks in a vertical row that align with 3 vertical rows of eyes spread over a specific length. This system is reversed and 3 larger special designed hooks ( ref. drawings) replace the 6 small eyes and one special designed eye (ref. drawings) replaces the two small hooks.
- the base of the larger hooks replaced have at least the pulling surface of 2 or more smaller traditional hooks. Similar the larger eye has a sufficient base for pulling strength.
- the hooks are integrated - embedded - into a small sleeve attached to one end of the bra through stitching, gluing or another fabric friendly attachment method.
- the base of the large eye is also integrated into a small sleeve attached to the other end of the bra, also through stitching, gluing or another fabric friendly attachment method.
- the back of the hook has the shape of a ramp so the large eye can easily slide upwards over the back and top of the hook.
- the hook should be able to tilt.
- the tilting is done by pushing the hook down, preferably through squeezing the fabric sleeve.
- the fabric of the base will stretch slightly by the downward pressure of the fingers squeezing the hook, causing the tilting effect.
- the fabric sleeve improves largely the sliding action of the eye over the back of top and back of the hook.
- Paragraph 17 through 33 describes the basic technical solution to the described in paragraphs 7 through 12 and form the base of the invention. Following paragraphs will describe the technical solution to technical problems 13 through 16.
- a base with hooks can be attached to the inside of the the end of the bra, the inside of the bra becomes then part of the sleeve eliminating one layer of fabric.
- This piece can be slid into the sleeve and with special fabric-friendly gluing techniques attached to the inside of the sleeve.
- the base of the eye can be attached tot a piece of metal or plastic type of material or even sandwiched between two very thin pieces of material.
- a detachable eye with two identical noses can be used to lock in either side of the bra and adjusted through locking into the hooks of both side.
- the body of the eye can be covered with fabric, plastic or other soft material, as long as nose of the eye is open for locking into the hook.
- the cover of the body of the eye must be flexible because when the nose locks into the middle or last hook, the body of the eye settles over the other hooks and with a rigid body the other hooks would be pushed down constantly, which is not much of a problem when attached to a soft base but with a hard base the hooks might fatigue through constant pressure over a period of time loose their flexibility.
- the body of the eye can be decorated with fixed, movable or detachable figures, labels, jewelry and alike of any type of material, preferable very thin and/or soft taking into consideration the possible pressure on the back.
- the decoration should be preferable movable in order to be able to center it depending position of the eye(s) and hooks.
- the entrance of the sleeve can be provided with a small guiding lip for easy entrance of the eye into the sleeve. The lip fits also into the other side of the bra, enhancing the finished look.
- a set of three hooks preferably extruded can very easily be inserted into the sleeve and glued onto the fabric of the bra. This solves problem 12.
- the eye can be covered with fabric but also can be used as a base for any type of decoration.
- the eye itself can become a decoration itself, in which case the wearer can have a bra with several detachable decorated eyes of different type and sizes. This solves problem 14.
- the embedded adjustable bra closure is easier to use, faster to adjust less bulky, far more flexible, esthetical superior and more cost-effective than any traditional adjustable locking system.

- Fig.35 is a side view of the eye 3 sliding over the hook 4. This drawing shows the non- flexible material 31 pushing the hook down.
- the hook should be made out of flexible material and/or the base of the hook should be flexible.
- FIG.36 is perspective view of the embedded adjustable bra garment closure.
- the drawing shows the integrated lip 32 as an aid for guiding the eye into the sleeve.
- the best mode of this invention is the integration of two sets of plastic hooks in two sleeves on either side of the ends of the bra, using a detachable eye with decoration that can be centered.
- the sets do not need to contain more than two hooks on each side as this gives three combination settings which is equal to the combination of the traditional system and therefor easily integrated.
- Using two sets of two hooks adds to the symmetry of the whole closure system.
