Definitions
- This invention relates to a security door.
- the conventional security door for banks and other buildings comprises a pair of opposing members defining a compartment into which a person enters after opening the first door and then waiting for an electronic signal to open the second member to enter the building.
- Another object of the invention is to provide a unit that may replace an existing door.
- the invention also has as an object the replacement of the conventional electronically controlled door and which permits the possibility of being able to be held open in spite of the electronic control for any number of persons to pass through the door in the case of an emergency.
- a security door unit of the type comprising a pair of members defining a compartment into which a person enters after opening the first member and then awaits a signal while in the compartment to open the second member to exit the compartment, is characterised in that
- the members are coaxial at a fixed angle, an including a barrier that, with the free vertical edges of the members in a first position of the members, defines a closed compartment, the members being movable to a second position in which the angle therebetween is available for entry of a person at one side of the unit, the opening at the entry side being obturated by the inside member at the time, followed by a return to the first position and thence, to a third position in which the angle therebetween is open for exit of the person, the opening at the exit side being obturated by the other, now the inside, member at the time.
- the first position may be restored automatically once a person has exited the compartment.
- a person wishing to pass through the opening is therefore required to open the outer member, enter the angle, push the inner member to constitute the compartment and then to push the inner door further to be free of the barrier. Only one person at a time may pass through the opening.
- the members and barrier of the invention may replace any conventional door where security is required.
- the members of the door unit may resemble conventional doors and do not detract from the aesthetics of a building.
- the door unit is entirely self-contained and may be fitted to an existing opening or a pre- prepared opening in a wall, fence or other barrier.
- Various materials and finishes may be used - for example, in prestige office blocks, the members may be of glass and steel to match the aesthetics of the building.
- the members In a fence line the members may be constructed of similar materials to a conventional steel bar gate.
- the door unit of the invention may be controlled by access control devices such as card, tag or biometric readers and may have a special control to provide a fourth position in which neither member is in a closing position to give access to wheel chairs and also to provide for emergencies such as fire.
- access control devices such as card, tag or biometric readers and may have a special control to provide a fourth position in which neither member is in a closing position to give access to wheel chairs and also to provide for emergencies such as fire.
- Figure A is a plan view and three elevations of a door unit according to the invention
- Figure B is an isometric view of the door unit
- Figure C is a plan view of the essential items of the door unit
- Figures 1 to 6 are diagrammatic representations of the various positions of the door unit in operation.
- a door unit comprises a pair of members 10 (AB) and 12 (AC) which share a common hinge 14 and are at a fixed angle 16. Each member has a handle 18.
- a barrier 20 (PQRS) is located to correspond with the free vertical edges of the members 10,12.
- the barrier and the members define a compartment 22 in the first position of the unit (see also Figure 1). It will be appreciated that the barrier may be curved, if required.
- the unit has a capping element 24 which retains the post 26 with its common hinge, as well as the barrier.
- FIGs 1 to 5 the normal operation of the unit is shown.
- the unit In Figure 1 the unit is in its first or closed position.
- the outside member 10 In Figure 2 the outside member 10 is opened by a person requiring entry and the inner member 12 takes the place of the outer member. This is the limit of the movement of the inner door and ensures that no-one can force an entry.
- the person locates him/herself in the angle and then pushes the inner door back to its original ( Figure 1) position and forms a compartment 22 as described above.
- a further push of the inner member in Figure 4 enables the person to exit from the compartment and into the building.
- the unit then reverts automatically (by spring, hydraulic or other means) to its original position (the position of Figures 1 and 3).
- a system of indicator lights may be provided to show availability of the unit to the next person wishing to enter.
- the unit may be locked by means of a special pawl-type electronic head in the first position.
- Access control devices such as card, tag or biometric readers are fitted at convenient locations inside and outside. Once such access control has accepted the device, the lock is released and the operation may commence as described above.
