Abstract

A method and apparatus is provided for replacing a pole (14) in an electrical utility support structure (10) while the supported electrical wires (20) remain energized. The method comprises erecting a replacement pole (30) adjacent to a pole (50) to be replaced, and providing a pivotable support arm (28) on the replacement pole (30) so that it will be engageable with the cross arm support (16) carrying the electrical wires (20) of the utility support structure (10). The support arm (28) is adapted to lift and support the cross arm (16), whereupon the replaced pole (50) may be disengaged from the cross arm (24) and removed. A guy wire (40) provides support for maintaining the load weight of the cross arm (16) laterally on the replacement pole (30). The guy wire (40) helps to transfer the supported load centrally on the replacement pole (30) to prevent the supported weight from causing the replacement pole (30) to lean. Mounting brackets (32) are provided for attachment to the replacement pole (30) which provide a base for connection and pivoting of the support arm (28).
