Definitions
- the present invention relates to a clip.
- the clip the present invention relates to a clip used to secure a cable bundle against a surface.
- the cable tray is attached to, and runs along, the inside wall of the room or building.
- the cable tray is at a convenient height for access and might be secured to building stud members for example.
- Cable ties are, in turn, attached to the cable tray and secure the cable to the cable tray.
- the rear panel of the cable tray is perforated with a series of holes through which the cable ties are threaded.
- a cable tie is in use threaded through two or more of the holes in the rear of the cable tray and then secured around the bundle of cables to be held together.
- the cable tray is attached to the wall of the room or building and typically is a close fit against the wall.
- the cables held in the cable tray may be of considerable weight and having the channel only loosely attached to the wall would be unwise and probably unsafe for users of the building.
- a difficulty may then arise in the installation of cable ties in that it is awkward for the electrician to attach the cable ties to the cable tray. There is little space between the cable tray and the wall in which to manoeuvre the cable, tie. This difficulty is exacerbated when the cable tray already has one or more bundles of cables held therein.
- the clip of the invention offers an alternative means by which a bundle of cable may be secured together to a surface such as a wall.
- a cable clip having means for removable attachment of the clip to a supporting surface; means for securing a cable tie to said clip, said means being spaced from said elongate body to thereby facilitate insertion and removal of a cable tie therefrom.
- the clip of the invention may attach the clip directly to a wall without the use of an intervening cable tray.
- the clip may include provision for screwing directly to a wallboard or a wall stud.
- an existing cable tray it is also possible to attach the clip of the invention to the tray
- the clip is an elongate clip having one or more outer portions, said outer portions serving to provide a means for connecting the clip to a supporting surface.
- the clip includes a series of upper cross members elevated and spaced apart from a series of lower cross members.
- the upper and lower cross members are offset from one another along the length of the clip.
- a channel is formed between an upper surface of lower cross member and a lower surface of an adjacent upper cross member, the channel serving to direct any cable tie passing into the channel in the correct direction to thereby facilitate the process of securing a tie to the clip.
- the upper surface of the lower cross members is gabled upwardly to form a central apex.
- the lower cross members are, at their ends, level with the outermost tracks, whereby the clip is able to lie comfortably against a wall or other supporting surface.
- an upper surface of the lower cross member contains is indented, whereby the channel follows alternate upward and down ward directions.
- each tongue interacting with a tongue on an adjacent clip to thereby allow the formation of a continuous run of clips.
- said complementary projecting tongues are formed from a projecting portion of the upper cross members.
- Figure 1 shows a clip in accordance with the invention in perspective view
- Figure 2 shows the clip of figure 1 in plan view
- Figure 3a illustrates the clip of figure 1 in cross section taken along the line 3-3';
- Figure 3b shows schematically a detail of the cross sectional view of figure 3a
- FIGS 4, 5 and 6 illustrate the manner in which the clip of the invention ay be used.
- a clip 10 formed in accordance with the invention.
- the clip 10 is typically attached to a supporting structure such as a wall.
- the clip 10 has an elongate generally planar body and includes outermost longitudinal tracks 12 and an inner longitudinal raised central track 14.
- the outer tracks 12 each run along longitudinal edges of the clip 10.
- the tracks 12 are punctuated by a series of apertures 16 extending along the tracks.
- the apertures 16 serve as a means by which the clip is fastened to a supporting surface.
- screws 18 are inserted through the apertures 16 to fasten the clip 10 to a wallboard, stud or other surface.
- the apertures 16 are not essential to the functioning of the clip 10.
- a first series of lower cross members 20 extend between and connect the outermost tracks 12.
- the lower cross members 20 are spaced apart from one another at regular intervals along the length of the clip 10 and so a space 22 exists between each adjacent lower cross member 20.
- the upper surface of the cross members 20 is gabled upwardly to form a central apex 24.
- the lower cross members 20 are, at their ends, level with the outermost tracks 12 and thus, the clip is able to lie comfortably against a wall or other supporting surface.
- the length of the clip 10 is selected so that the two ends of the clip are each at the respective apex 24 of a lower cross member 20.
- the two tongues 26 on each clip are on opposing longitudinal sides of the clip 10.
- each tongue 26 interacts with an adjacent clip and rests against the cross member 20 of the adjacent clip. The tongues thus allow the formation of a continuous run of clip in a relatively seamless manner.
- a pair of spaced apart, upstanding, parallel longitudinal side members 28 defines the raised central track 14.
- a second series of transverse cross members 30 extend between the side members 28.
- the cross members 30 are spaced apart from one another at regular intervals along the length of the clip 10. Importantly, the cross members 30 sit over the spaces 22 and not over the lower cross members 20. It can also be seen from the drawing that the upper cross members 30 have an indented surface that produces a downward projecting point 32.
- the upper cross members 30 are elevated and spaced from the lower cross members 20. Further, the respective sets of cross members 20 and 30 are offset from one another along the length of the clip. It can be seen that between the upper surface of lower cross member 20 and the lower surface of an adjacent upper cross member 30 a channel 34 is formed.
- the channel 34 is inclined with respect to clip 10. Further because of the gable in the lower cross member and the indent 32 in the upper cross member the channel 34 follows alternate upward and down ward directions.
- the path 34 thus created is adapted to direct any cable tie passing into the channel 34 in the correct direction.
- a cable tie is simply inserted under the upper cross members 30 and as a result of the angle of the channel 34, the indent in the cross member 30 and the position of the apex 24 on the lower cross members 20 the tie is turned around and directed back to the surface of the clip. The process of securing a tie to the clip 10 is thus facilitated.
