Abstract

The present invention embeds a Fabry-Perot Optical sensing device (102) in a composite cable (101) or installs it with the splices (104) or dead ends (106) to measure a plurality of physical characteristics in a composite cable (101) and accompanying splices and dead ends. The present invention may place one or more of the sensors (102) into different parts of the cable (101) or may place one or more sensors (102) along one stretch of cable (101). The present invention may use these sensors (102) to measure strain, temperature, pressure or other physical characteristics. The present invention describes methods of employing these devices in a power grid that uses composite cables (101).
