Definitions
- the present invention relates to a cap closure with a security band for containers of liquids, particularly for bottles of which the opening is situated at the end of a neck which extends axially from the body of the bottle and which has, on its outer surface, a thread which is engaged by a corresponding matching thread formed on the internal surface of the cap, as well as an annular projection extending radially and positioned between the thread and the body of the bottle at a predetermined axial distance from the thread, the projection defining an abutment beneath which an annular rib carried by the internal surface of the security band of the cap is engaged, the band having a free edge at one of its ends and being connected axially to the cap at the opposite end by means of a circumferential line of weakening.
- the bottles to which the cap of the present invention relates are in particular those that are produced by blowing from a hollow tubular semi-finished product which is closed at one end and is pre-moulded from high-quality plastics material such as, for example, polyethylene terephthalate, commonly referred to as PET, for containing beverages such as natural or carbonated mineral water.
- high-quality plastics material such as, for example, polyethylene terephthalate, commonly referred to as PET, for containing beverages such as natural or carbonated mineral water.
- the cap is fitted on the neck by conventional axial fitting which brings about engagement between the threads which are usable for the opening and closure of the cap by rotation thereof, as well as bringing about engagement of the rib of the security band beneath the abutment defined by the annular projection provided on the neck of the bottle.
- the practice of reducing the axial extent of the annular projection of the neck as far as possible is widespread.
- the inaccuracy of the positioning of the security band and, in particular, of a portion of its rib can be attributed mainly to the presence of an annular region which is recessed relative to the profile of the annular projection and which is formed immediately beneath the thread of the neck because of the reduction of the axial extent of the projection.
- edge by which the security band is connected to the cap by means of the line of weakening has a conical outer surface with tapering towards the line of weakening to enable the cap to be manufactured by moulding in a single piece with the security band without undercuts, the presence of which would require the use of complex moulds that would be incompatible with the required inexpensiveness of the product in question.
- the object of the present invention is therefore to provide a cap with a security band for bottles of the type indicated in the introduction which enables the cap to be fitted axially onto the neck of the bottle in order to close the bottle immediately after filling, without giving rise to the problems that were discussed with reference to conventional known caps, even though production continues to be by moulding in an inexpensive manner avoiding undercuts .
- Figure 1 shows in cross-section the profile of the neck of a bottle to which the cap closure according to the invention relates
- Figure 2 shows schematically the defect which occurs on a bottle neck such as that of Figure 1 with the fitting of cap closures of the prior art
- Figure 3 shows a cap closure according to the invention, partially in side view and partially in axial section
- Figure 4 shows, on an enlarged scale, an axial section through the security band of a cap closure incorporating the invention.
- the thread engages a matching thread 4 carried by the internal surface 5 of the tubular skirt 6 of a cap closure 7 when the cap closure is fitted on the neck of the bottle upon completion of the filling thereof.
- the security band 9 is connected to the tubular skirt 6 by means of a line of weakening, generally indicated 8.
- the line of weakening 8 consists, in conventional manner, of a plurality of axial bridges 10 alternating with slots 11.
- the security band 9 has, in its internal surface 12, an annular rib 13 which extends radially towards the neck of the bottle.
- this rib 13 engages beneath an annular projection 14 extending radially and formed on the neck of the bottle between the thread and the start of the body of the bottle itself.
- the annular projection 14 is spaced axially from the thread 3 by a predetermined distance so that the abutment 15 which the rib 13 of the band 9 abuts physically is situated correctly in position, taking account of the necessary axial extent of the band 9.
- the projection 14 is formed with as short an axial extent as possible, consistent with the necessary mechanical strength required for the engagement with the rib 13 of the security band 9.
- the expansion undergone by the lower edge 18 of the security band 9 as it passes over the projection 14 may cause at least a portion of the opposite edge 19, which is connected to the cap 7 by the bridges 10, to bend towards the interior of the space 16 which is disposed immediately above the projection 14 since the projection 14 has acted on the band 9 as a fulcrum.
- a portion of the upper edge 19 of the security band 9 therefore becomes bent and slips under the tubular skirt 6 of the cap 7, also being facilitated in this by the conical shape of the edge 19, compromising the integrity of the seal .
- the security band 9 is provided with a further rib 20 which is positioned in the vicinity of the free edge 18 and which may extend in the form of a ring around the entire internal circumference of the band 9, or for sectors of that circumference.
- This further rib 20 extends radially for a distance which is less than the radial extent of the rib 13; this enables it to pass over the projection 14 during the axial fitting of the closure onto the neck of the bottle.
- the further rib 20 has a hoop effect on the band 9 and a limiting effect on the outward radial deformation of the lower edge 18 of the band when it is forced axially to pass over the projection 14. This hoop effect achieves the effect of opposing and preventing the implosion of portions of the opposite edge 19 of the security band 9 into the space 16.
- the side of the cross-section of the further rib 20, which is indicated 21 and which faces towards the free edge 18 of the band 9, is connected to that edge to facilitate the passage of the band 9 over the thread 3 and the projection 14.
- the rib 20 has been referred to and described as a single rib, it may alternatively also consist of two or more ribs arranged side by side axially and provided with characteristics similar to those described with reference to the rib 20.
- the cap closure 7 with the respective security band 9 is made of lower-quality plastics material than that which is used for the production of the bottle but in any case of a material which allows sufficient resilient deformation to permit the axial fitting of the closure on the neck of the bottle as described above.
