Abstract

A collapsible box (10) of semi-rigid cardboard comprises a base wall panel, a pair of side wall panels (14.1 and 14.2) and a pair of end wall panels (16.1 and 16.2). The side wall panel (14.1) defines two side wall fold lines (30.1 and 30.2) which extend from lower corners of the box and which meet at an apex (32). The side wall panel (14.2) similarly has two side wall fold lines meeting at an apex (26). In order to collapse the box, the end wall panels (16.1 and 16.2) are folded inwardly, causing the side wall panels (14.1 and 14.2) to be folded inwardly. The side wall panels are folded along the side wall fold lines, with one of the side wall panels being folded under the other, thereby collapsing the box into a flat, compact collapsed condition.

Description

A COLLAPSIBLE BOX
FIELD OF INVENTION
This invention relates to a collapsible box.
SUMMARY OF INVENTION
According to the invention there is provided a collapsible box which in an erected condition of the box, comprises
a base wall;
a pair of opposed end walls; and
a pair of opposed side walls, the walls being foldable relative to one another along joint fold lines defined along joint lines between the walls, each side wall including two side wall fold lines which each extend from a different lower corner of the box defined by the side wall, one of the end walls and the base wall and a central upper edge region of the side wall intermediate upper corners of the box defined between the side wall and the end walls at opposite ends thereof. Each side wall may have a rectangular configuration, with the side wall fold lines meeting at a central position intermediate the upper corners of the box, the side wall fold lines dividing each side wall into a central isosceles triangular section and two right-angled triangular sections which are disposed on either side of the isosceles triangular section, thereby to permit collapsing of the side walls of the box in an arrangement wherein the right-angled triangular sections can be folded onto the isosceles triangular section.
The side walls and the end walls may be dimensioned and configured to permit collapsing of the box in an arrangement wherein the side walls are collapsed and folded onto the base wall and the end walls are folded onto the side walls.
The box includes handle formations in the form of apertures defined in the end wall.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
Further features of a collapsible box in accordance with the invention, are described hereinafter by way of non-limiting example of the invention, with reference to and as illustrated in the accompanying diagrammatic drawings. In the drawings:
Figure 1 shows an enlarged schematic top plan view of a container blank for constructing the collapsible box in accordance with the invention;
Figure 2 shows a schematic three-dimensional view of the box of Figure 1, in an erected condition thereof; Figure 3 shows a schematic three-dimensional view of the box of Figure 1 , in a partially collapsed condition thereof;
Figure 4 shows a schematic three-dimensional view of the box of Figure 1 , in a further stage of being collapsed; and
Figure 5 shows a schematic top plan view of the box of Figure 1, in a collapsed condition. DESCRIPTION OF PREFERRED EMBODIMENT
With reference to the drawings, a collapsible box in accordance with the invention is designated generally by the reference numeral 10. The collapsible box is of semi-rigid, recycled, reinforced cardboard and comprises a base wall panel 12, a pair of side wall panels 14.1 and 14.2, a pair of end wall panels 16.1 and 16.2 and side flaps 18 which extend from opposite sides of the side wall panels.
With reference to the drawings, the box is erected by folding the end wall panels and the side wall panels of the container blank inwardly along joint lines 23. The side flaps 18 are positioned along inner sides of the end walls 16.1 and 16.2 and are secured thereto by gluing the side flaps to the inner sides of the end walls. Each end wall panel 16 defines an aperture in the form of a slot 20 which provides a handle for carrying the box. As such, each side flap 18 defines a half slot 22 which, when the side flaps are folded behind the end wall panels, are disposed in register with the slots 20. The side wall panel 14.1 defines two side wall fold lines 24.1 and 24.2 that each extend from lower corners 25.1 and 25.2, respectively, defined between the side wall panel 14.1 , the base wall panel 12 and a particular end wall panel 16 and meet at an apex 26 that is disposed at an upper edge 28.1 of the side wall panel 14.1. Similarly, the side wall panel 14.2 defines two side wall fold lines 30.1 and 30.2 that each extend from lower corners 27.1 and 27.2, respectively, defined between the side wall panel 14.2, the base wall panel 12 and a particular end wall panel 16. The side wall fold lines meet at an apex 32 that is disposed at an upper edge 28.2 of the side wall panel 14.2.
The apices 26 and 32 of the side wall fold lines are disposed halfway between the joint lines 23 defined between the respective side wall panels and the end wall panels. Each side wall panel 14 when viewed in plan view, is divided into a central isosceles triangular section A and two right-angled triangular sections B1 and B2 disposed on either side of the isosceles triangular section.
In use, in an erected condition of the box, the end walls and the side walls of the box are disposed opposite one another so as to define a rectangular open- topped box. In order to fold the box into a collapsed condition thereof, the end wall panels 16.1 and 16.2 are displaced inwardly towards one another. This action causes the side wall panels 14.1 and 14.2 to be displaced inwardly. The side wall panels are collapsed by folding the isosceles triangular sections A onto the base wall 12, with the right-angled triangular sections B1 and B2 of each side wall panel being folded onto the isosceles triangular section so as to overlap it. More particularly one of the side walls 14.1 and 14.2 is folded under the other. As such, with the apices 26 and 32 of the side wall fold lines being disposed at the upper edges of the relevant side walls, the upper edge of the side wall which is folded under the other side wall is deformed slightly to allow for this to take place (in this example the side wall 14.2 is folded under the side wall 14.1 - see Figure 4 of the drawings). In the collapsed condition of the box the end walls are folded onto the side walls. In this collapsed state, the box can be stowed and/or transported while occupying a minimum of space.
The Applicant envisages that the box in accordance with the invention, can be used for carrying articles. In this regard, the Applicant envisages that the box is particularly effective for holding articles such as grocery items purchased at supermarkets or the like. Before and after use, the box can be folded into its compact, space-saving collapsed condition and stowed, for example, in the boot of a motor vehicle.
