Abstract

A shield structure (10) is designed to provide a medical personnel with protection against the infectious disease. The shield structure (10) comprises a headrest (20), a backrest (25) extending from one end of the headrest (20), a protective plate (30) extending uprightly from other end of the headrest (20), and a side guard fastened pivotally with one side edge of the headrest (20). The side guard and the protective plate (30) serve to stop dispersion of the vomitus of a patient. The protective plate (30) is provided with two through holes dimensioned to allow passage of two hands of the medical personnel.

PROTECTING SHIELD FOR PERFORMING THE INSERTION OF A TUBE DURING EMERGENCY RESCUING OR ANESTHESIA
Field of the Present Invention
The present invention relates generally to a protective shield for providing the medical personnel with protection against infectious disease, and more particularly to a shield structure which is designed exclusively to prevent a medical personnel from making contact with vomitus of a patient receiving an emergency treatment, or respiratory tubing to avert the condition of oxygen deficiency in the brain of the patient.
Background of the Present Invention
When a medical personnel performs an emergency treatment to a patient in urgency, he or she is exposed to a high-risk situation due to the lack of the detailed physical condition of the patient. For example, the patient might be a potential carrier of a highly- contagious disease, such as tuberculosis of the lungs, AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome), or SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome). The tuberculosis is a highly-contagious bacterial disease, while the AIDS and the SARS are highly-contagious viral diseases. According to the information disclosed by WHO (World Health Organization), a strict quarantine of a person confirmed or suspected of carrying the contagious SARS is the most effective way to root out the SARS epidemic. In another words, the SARS is transmitted by saliva and body fluid of the confirmed SARS patient. As a result, a medical personnel is most vulnerable to contraction of SARS. It is therefore imperative that the medical personnel must take every possible precaution to minimize such an occupational hazard as described above. According to the statistical data made public by CDC (Centers for Disease Control) of the United States, a medical personnel in close contact with a confirmed SARS patient is most susceptible to contraction of the SARS disease.
This inventor of the present invention is a licensed surgeon having had 15 years of medical experience in emergency clinic, hospital ward, and ICU (Intensive Care Unit). I have been involved from time to time in the medical procedure of respiratory tubing of a critical patient on an emergency basis. When such a risky medical procedure is carried out on an emergency basis, there is often not much time for a surgeon in charge to take adequate precaution. In light of the horrendous threat of the SARS epidemic, I have made an effort to invent a shield structure which is simple in construction and can be easily put to use in a short notice. The shield structure of the present invention is designed to prevent a medical personnel from coming in contact with body fluid and vomitus of a patient who is under care of the medical personnel.
Summary of the Present Invention
The-primary objective of the present invention is to provide a shield structure for providing a medical personnel with protection against contraction of the contagious diseases. The shield structure is simple in construction and cost-effective. The shield structure is highly effective in minimizing the vulnerability of the medical personnel to contraction of the highly contagious diseases, such as AIDS and SARS.
The shield structure of the present invention comprises a headrest, a backrest, and a protective plate. The headrest is laid on the surface of a surgical table to accommodate the head of a patient receiving a surgical operation. The backrest is extended from one end of the headrest and is raised to give a support to the back of the patient whose chest is thus raised. The protective plate is uprightly extended from other end of the headrest and is provided with two through holes dimensioned to allow passage of two hands of a medical personnel performing the surgical operation. The protective plate serves to stop dispersion of the vomitus of the patient so as to provide the medical personnel with protection against a contagious disease, such as the SARS disease which is caused by a coronavirus.
The headrest may be provided with at least one side guard fastened pivotally therewith. The side guard is intended to prevent the vomitus of the patient from speading sideways.

Detailed Description of the Preferred Embodiment
As shown in FIGS. 1, 2, and 3, a shield structure 10 embodied in the present invention is designed to provide a medical personnel with a maximum protection at the time when the medical personnel performs an emergency care or respiratory tubing of a patient.
The shield structure 10 comprises a head rest 20, a back rest 26, and a protective plate 30. The shield structure 10 of the present invention is integrally made of a transparent material, such as acrylic material. The head rest 20 has an upper side 21, an underside 22, a front edge 23, a rear edge 24 and two side edges 25. The backrest 26 is extended from the front edge 23 of the head rest 20 such that the back rest 26 is raised to form a back support which is used to raise the chest of a patient, as illustrated in FIG. 3, at such time when the patient is laid on a surgical table in such a manner that the back of the head of the patient is placed on the upper side 21 of the head rest 20.
The protective plate 30 is extended uprightly from the rear edge 24 of the head rest 20. The protective plate 30 has an outer surface 31, an inner surface 32, a top edge 33, a bottom edge 34, and two side edges 35. The outer surface 31 is an extension of the underside 22 of the head rest 20, while the inner surface 32 is an extension of the upper side 21 of the head rest 20. The bottom edge 34 is connected with the rear edge 24 of the head rest 20. The protective plate 30 is provided with two through holes 36 which are dimensioned to allow passage of two hands of a medical personnel. In operation, the hands of the medical personnel reach the patient through the through holes 36 so as to perform an emergency care or respiratory tubing. In the event that the patient vomits in the course of the operation, the vimitus is stopped by the inner surface 32 of the protective plate 30, thereby providing the medical personnel with protection against infectious diseases.
As shown in FIG. 4, the two through holes 36 of the protective plate 30 are provided with a sleeve 361 fastened therewith. The two sleeves 361 are intended to provide two hands of the medical personnel with additional protection against the vomitus of the patient.
As shown in FIGS. 5 and 6, the two through holes 36 of the protective plate 30 are provided with a retaining portion 362 for holding detachably one end of a disposable sleeve 363, which is properly disposed of at the conclusion of a surgical operation.
As shown in FIG. 7, the underside 22 of the head rest 20 is provided with a plurality of rollers 221, which are intended to facilitate the adjusting of the position of the shied structure 10.
As shown in FIGS. 8 and 9, one of the two side edges 25 of the head rest 20 is provided with a plurality of pivoting portions 27 for fastening pivotally a side guard 30'. The side guard 30' is provided with two fastening portions 38 which are pivotally fastened with the pivoting portions 27 of the head rest 20. The side guard 30' is used to avert the sideway spread of the vomitus of the patient. The side guard 30' can be positioned uprightly or horizontally.
As shown in FIG. 10, the shield structure 10 of the present invention comprises a curved protective plate 30, which is bent in such a way that a top edg 33 of the carved protective plate 30 is bent in the direction toward the back rest 26. The vomitus of the patient is stopped by an inner surface 32 of the curved protective plate 30.
As shown in FIGS. 11 and 12, the shield structure of the present invention comprises a backrest 26' which is detachably fastened with the head rest 20'. The backrest 26' is provided at a rear edge with a retaining projection 261'. The head rest 20' is provided at a front edge 23' with a retaining slot 231'. The backrest 26' is detachably fastened with the head rest 20' such that the retaining projection 261' of the backrest 26' is separably retained in the retaining slot 231' of the front edge 23' of the head rest 20'.
As shown in FIGS. 13, 14, and 15, a shield structure of the second preferred embodiment of the present invention comprises a headrest 40, a backrest 46, and a protective plate 50. The headrest 40 has an upper side 41, an underside 42, a front edge 43, a rear edge 44, and two side edges 45. The upper side 41 is used to rest the back of the head of a patient. The underside 42 of the headrest 40 is rested on the surface of a surgical table on which the patient is laid. The backrest 46 is extended from the front edge 43 of the headrest 40 such that the backrest 46 is raised to form a back support by which the chest of the patient is raised.
The headrest 40 is characterized by two location slots 47 which are formed uprightly at an interval from the rear edge 44 of the headrest 40.
The protective plate 50 is made of a transparent material. The protective plate 50 has an outer side 51, an inner side 52, a top edge 53, a bottom edge 54, end two side edges 55. The protective plate 50 is provided with two through holes 56 which are dimensioned to allow passage of two hands of a medical personnel performing an emergency treatment or respiratory tubing of the patient. The protective plate 50 is separably joined with the headrest 40 in such a manner that the protective plate 50 is located uprightly by the two locating slots 47 of the headrest 40. In another words, the protective plate 50 can be slid into and out of the two locating slots 47 of the headrest 40. The inner side 52 of the protective plate 50 serves as a shield to stop the vomitus of the patient.
As shown in FIG 16, the through holes 56 of the protective plate 50 are provided with a sleeve 561 fastened therewith. The sleeve 561 enhances the protective effect of the protective plate 50. In addition, the sleeve 561 allows a medical personnel to perform immediately an emergency treatment without wearing an appropriate protective outfit.
As shown in FIGS. 17 and 18, the two through holes 56 of the protective plate 50 are provided with a retaining portion 562, which is located along the hole edge of the outer side 51 and is used to hold one end of a disposable sleeve 563, as shown in FIG 18. The sleeve 563 is disposed of at the conclusion of the surgical operation.
As shown in FIG. 19, one of the two side edges 45 of the headrest 40 is provided with a plurality of pivoting portions 48 for fastening pivotally the connection portions 49 of a side guard 40'. The side guard 40' can be turned to remain in an upright position to prevent the sideway dispersion of the vomitus of a patient.
As shown in FIG. 20, the protective plate 50 has a curvature and bends toward the backrest 45. The curved plate 50 is more effective in stopping the vomitus of a patient. As illustrated in FIG. 21, the protective plates 30 and 50 of the present invention are respectively provided in two side edges 35 (45) thereof with an indentation 36' (56') in place of the through hole 36 (56).
In order to prevent the transparent protective plates 30 and 50 of the present invention from becoming hazy by the condensed moisture, the inner side 32 (52) of the protective plate 30 (50) may be coated with a defogging agent. Instead of using the defogging agent, the inner side 32(52) of the protective plate 30(50) may be made of a nanomaterial.
The embodiments of the present invention described above are to be regarded in all respects as being illustrative and nonrestrictive. Accordingly, the present invention may be embodied in other specific forms without deviating from the spirit thereof. The present invention is therefore to be limited only by the scopes of the following claims.

Claims

WHAT IS CLAIMED IS:
1. A protecting shield used to stop dispersion of the vomitus of a patient receiving a medical treatment on a surgical table, said protecting shield comprising: a headrest having an upper side, an underside, a front edge, a rear edge, and two side edges whereby said headrest is laid on the surgical table such that said underside comes in contact with the surgical table, and that said upper side of said headrest is used to accommodate the head of the patient; a backrest extending from said front edge of said headrest and having a support surface greater in elevation than said upper side of said headrest; and a protective plate extending uprightly from said rear edge of said headrest and having an outer side, an inner side, a top edge, a bottom edge, and two side edges, said protective plate being provided with two through holes extending from said outer side through said inner side whereby said two through holes are dimensioned to allow passage of two hands of a medical personnel who performs the medical treatment.
2. The protecting shield as recited in claim 1, wherein said two through holes of said protective plate are provided with a sleeve fastened therewith whereby said sleeve extends in a direction toward said backrest.
3. The protecting shield as recited in claim 1, wherein said two through holes of said protective plate are provided with a retaining portion.
4. The protecting shield as recited in claim 3, further comprise a disposable sleeve, which is holding detachably on the retaining portion and can properly disposed of at the conclusion of a surgical operation.
5. The protecting shield as recited in claim 1, wherein said headrest is provided in the underside thereof with a plurality of rollers.
6. The protecting shield as recited in claim 1, wherein one of the two side edges of said headrest is provided with a side guard fastened pivotally therewith.
7. The protecting shield as recited in claim 1, wherein said protective plate has a curvature and bends in a direction toward said backrest.
8. The protecting shield as recited in claim 1, wherein said headrest is provided in the front edge thereof with a retaining slot; wherein said backrest is provided with a retaining projection corresponding in location to said retaining slot of said headrest whereby said backrest is made separately from said headrest and is separably joined with said headrest in such a way that said retaining projection of said backrest is separably retained in said retaining slot of the front edge of said headrest.
9. The protecting shield as recited in claim 8, wherein said headrest and said protective plate are integrally made of a transparent material.
10. The protecting shield as recited in claim 1, wherein said protective plate is provided with two indentations whereby said two indentations are respectively located in said two side edges of said protective plate in place of said two through holes.
11. A protecting shield used to stop dispersion of dispersion of the vomitus of a patient receiving a medical treatment on a surgical table, said protecting shield comprising: a headrest having an upper side, an underside, a front edge, a rear edge, and two side edges, said headrest being laid on the surgical table such that the underside comes in contact with the surgical table, and that the upper side of said headrest is used to accommodate the head of the patient whereby said headrest is provided at the rear edge thereof with one or more locating slots extending uprightly; a backrest extending from the front edge of said headrest and having a support surface greater in elevation than the upper side of said headrest; and a protective plate having an outer side, an inner side, a top edge, a bottom edge , and two side edges, said protective plate being provided with two through holes extending from said outer side through said inner side, said two through holes being dimensioned to allow passage of two hands of a medical personnel who performs the medical treatment whereby said protective plate is separably joined with said headrest in such a manner that the bottom edge of said protective plate is removably located in said locating slots of said headrest.
12. The protecting shield as recited in claim 11, wherein said two through holes of said protective plate are provided with a sleeve fastened therewith whereby said sleeve extends in a direction toward said backrest.
13. The protecting shield as recited in claim 11, wherein said two through holes of said protective plate are provided with a retaining portion.
14. The protecting shield as recited in claim 13, further comprise a disposable sleeve, which is holding detachably on the retaining portion and can properly disposed of at the conclusion of a surgical operation.
15. The protecting shield as recited in claim 11, wherein one of the two side edges of said headrest is provided with a side guard fastened pivotally therewith.
16. The protecting shield as recited in claim 11, wherein said protective plate has a curvature and bends in a direction toward said backrest.
17. The protecting shield as recited in claim 11, wherein said protective plate is provided with two indentations whereby said two indentations are respectively located in said two side edges of said protective plate in place of said two through holes.
18. The protecting shield as recited in claim 11, wherein said protective plate is made of a transparent material.
