Definitions
- the invention relates to a method for providing an article, i.e. a plant, with a decorative wrapping in the form of a wrapping film, wherein the wrapping film is applied around the pot in such a manner that the wrapping film extends beyond the top rim of the pot .
- a method is known from US-A-4 773 182.
- decorative wrapping is manufactured in such a manner that, for example at the growers, pots can be wrapped in it.
- the drawback of the known method is that the decorative wrapping for the various occasions, such as Christmas or Mother's Day, are in actual fact semi-finished products that are manufactured beforehand and kept in storage, while remnants have to be destroyed or stored for a long time.
- the decorative wrapping is, for example at the grower's, applied directly off the roll around the pot, so that it is no longer necessary to store the semi-finished products.
- the method according to the invention is characterised in that at least one wrapping film is folded around the pot and attached such that a form assumed during application will at least substantially be retained.
- a favourable embodiment of the method according to the invention wherein, moreover a plant in the pot receives optimal protection, is characterised in that the at least one wrapping film is attached to the top rim of the pot.
- Another favourable embodiment of the method according to the invention is characterised in that the at least one wrapping film is glued or thermally or ultrasonically welded to the top rim of the pot, whereby the form retention of the covering is safeguarded.
- a favourable alternative embodiment is characterised in that the at least one wrapping film is glued or welded above the top ' rim of the pot, such that the folds in the at least one wrapping film are glued together. A wrapping film glued together in this manner will remain in place and may optionally be removed, without leaving any trace on the pot .
- the invention also relates to an apparatus for providing an article, such as a plant placed in a pot, with a decorative wrapping in the form of a wrapping film.
- the apparatus according to the invention is characterised in that the apparatus is provided with a feed path for pieces of wrapping film, a feed path for pots, a conveying element for placing a pot on at least one piece of wrapping film, a folding element with which the at least one piece of wrapping film is folded around the pot , and an attaching element for attaching the at least one piece of wrapping film.
- a favourable embodiment of the apparatus according to the invention is characterised in that the attaching element is designed for gluing or thermally or ultrasonically welding the at least one piece of wrapping film to the pot, whereby the raised portion of the wrapping film receives maximum support and thereby forms an optimal protection for a plant placed in a pot .
- a favourable alternative embodiment of the apparatus according to the invention is characterised in that the attaching element is designed for gluing together and folding the at least one piece of wrapping film above a top rim of a pot .
- the invention also relates to a flowerpot, provided with a decorative wrapping in the form of a wrapping film, applied around the flowerpot such that the wrapping film extends beyond a top rim of the flowerpot .
- the flowerpot provided with a decorative wrapping in accordance with the invention is characterised in that the flowerpot is provided with at least one wrapping film that at the top rim is attached to the flowerpot.
- a favourable embodiment of the flowerpot provided with a decorative wrapping is characterised in that the at least one wrapping film is glued or attached to the flowerpot by thermal or ultrasonic: welding near the top rim of the flowerpot .
- a favourable alternative embodiment of the flowerpot provided with a decorative wrapping is characterised in that the folds in the at least one wrapping film are glued together above the top rim, so that the at least one wrapping film remains in place.

- Fig. 3 schematically shows an apparatus for providing a pot with a decorative wrapping
- Fig. 4 schematically shows a cross section of this apparatus prior to the application of the decorative wrapping
- Fig. 5 schematically shows a cross section of this apparatus during wrapping
- Fig. 6 schematically shows a cross section of an alternative embodiment of this apparatus
- Fig. 7 schematically shows a cross section of a further alternative embodiment of the apparatus.
- Fig. 1 shows in Fig. 1A an unwrapped pot 1, placed on a wrapping film 2 made of a plastic or of paper.
- the wrapping film 2 is folded tautly upward along pot 1, as shown in Fig. IB, inevitably forming a series of folds 3 in the wrapping film 2 which, however, contribute to the decorative effect.
- the wrapping film 2 may be plain or reflecting, but may also, for example, be provided with a seasonal print.
- the pot shown here is provided with a line of glue 4 on or at a top rim of pot 1, to fix the wrapping film 2.
- the line of glue 4 may in fact be any quick-drying or quick- curing glue suitable for gluing plastic wrapping film.
- the line of glue 4 does not need to be applied around the entire top rim; it generally suffices to apply, for example, ten drops of glue.
- Fig. 2 shows in Fig. 2A an unwrapped pot 1, placed on two wrapping films 2a, 2b, made of plastic. When applying . the decorative wrapping, the wrapping films 2a, 2b are tautly folded upward along pot 1, as shown in Fig. 2B, thereby forming folds 3 in the wrapping film 2a, 2b.
- the wrapping films 2a, 2b may be plain or reflecting, and may be rotated in relation to one another, providing an extra decorative effect.
- Fig. 3 schematically shows an apparatus for providing a pot 1 with a decorative wrapping, consisting of a stock roll 6a of plastic film or plasticised paper, or paper, from which an automatically operated knife or punch 7a cuts off a piece 8a, which piece 8a is placed with the aid of an arm (not shown in the figure) onto a conveyor belt 9.
- Conveyor belt 9 comprises, for example, two conveyor belts made of rubber or plastic; they are electrostatically charged in a manner known in the art, so that pieces of wrapping film placed thereon are held firmly in place. Subsequently, in a completely analogous manner, a piece of wrapping film 8b is cut off a roll 6b by means of a knife or punch 7b and placed on the piece of wrapping film 8a, preferably slightly rotated in order to enhance a decorative effect. Then, using a knife • or punch 7c, a piece of wrapping film 8c is cut off a roll 6c and placed on a piece of wrapping film 8b, preferably again slightly rotated.
- this parcel of wrapping film- is then placed on an opening 10 in a work top 11 whereafter, by means of a conveyor such as, for example a robot arm (not shown in the figure) pot 1 is placed thereon.
- the pot 1 drops into the hole 10 taking with it the collected pieces of wrapping film 8a, 8b, 8c, in the process of which the wrapping films are draped around the pot 1.
- the wrapping films are then attached on or around the pot 1, whereafter the pot 1, now provided with a decorative wrapping, may be taken away at the underside of the worktop 1.
- Fig. 4 schematically shows a cross section of this apparatus before the decorative wrapping is applied, with work top 11 wherein an opening 10 is provided and which lies in the path of conveyor track 9.
- a collar 12 In opening 10 a collar 12 is provided, having an opening whose size is chosen to be large enough to allow a top rim 13 of pot 1 to just pass through. Pot 1 is placed on a piece of wrapping film 8 indicated with a dotted line, with the pot 1 being initially supported by a support 14. When support 14 is lowered, the pot 1 is lowered into opening 10 and the wrapping film 8 is draped around pot 1, with the piece of wrapping film 8 being drawn tautly around the pot 1.
- further obvious means may be used to actively push the pot 1 downward, for example, if the pot 1 is very light.
- Fig. 5 schematically shows a cross section of this apparatus during wrapping, with the support 14 being lowered far enough for the top rim 13 of the pot 1 to be at the same level as a number of attaching elements 15, consisting of a first finger 16 for locally stretching the wrapping film and a second, heated finger 17 for thermally welding the wrapping film on or at the top rim 13.
- a number of attaching elements 15 consisting of a first finger 16 for locally stretching the wrapping film and a second, heated finger 17 for thermally welding the wrapping film on or at the top rim 13.
- an attaching member 15 is shown before the same is moved inward, while in the right half of the figure an attaching member 15 is shown at the moment the welds are being made.
- the fingers 17 realise a number of point welds around the circumference of the wrapping film.
- the attaching members 15 with fingers 17 having a width such that all the fingers together form a practically continuous weld.
- the support 14 is lowered further, after which the pot provided with a decorative wrapping can be removed sideways or may be lifted up with the aid of support 14 to be removed via the top of table 11.
- Figure 6 shows a schematic cross section of an alternative embodiment of this apparatus wherein, for example, 3-6 heated fastening members 18 are placed around opening 10.
- the support 14 is lowered far enough for the fastening members to be above the top rim 13 around wrapping film 8.
- a fastening member 18 is shown prior to being moved inward, while in the right half of the figure a fastening member 18 is shown at the moment the spot welds are being made.
- the spot welds fuse together the folds in the piece of wrapping film 8, or the folds in several pieces of wrapping film 8a, 8b, 8c, whereby the shape is retained when the pot with decorative wrapping is removed from the apparatus.
- press-on members 19 extending from above in the direction of the pot 1, and which are able to work together with the heated fastening members 18 by supplying a counterpression so that during heating, the wrapping film 8 is clamped between the fastening members 18 and the press-on members 19.
- heated fastening members 18 it is also possible to use fastening members that, in a manner known in the art, can be caused to ultrasonically vibrate, by which means it is also possible to realise a weld.
- Fig. 7 shows a schematic cross section of a further alternative embodiment of the apparatus, that may be used in combination with one or several shrink films .
- about 3-6 nozzles 20 are placed around opening 10, blowing hot or cold air, as desired.
- the support 14 is lowered far enough for the nozzles 20 to be above the top rim 13, around wrapping film 8.
- a nozzle 20 is shown before the same blows hot air, while the right half of the figure shows the wrapping film 8 after the nozzle 20 has• blown hot air. Owing to the hot air, the folds in wrapping film 8 fuse together, while the wrapping film also shrinks all around, thereby tightening it around the pot 1.
- cold air may be blown through nozzle 20 causing a temperature shock and causing the wrapping film 8 to stiffen in the assumed shape.
- other heat sources may also be employed, for example infrared radiation.
