Abstract

A memory card connector includes an insulative housing having a mating face and a circuit board mounting face (32) with at least one terminal-receiving passage (34) having an opening in the mating face of the housing. A terminal is received in the terminal-receiving passage and includes an elongated spring arm (42) cantilevered in the passage and defining a longitudinal axis of the arm. A dome-shaped contact portion (50) is located near a distal end of the cantilevered spring arm projecting through the opening in the mating face of the housing and defining an oval-shaped convex contact surface. The oval-shaped convex contact surface has an elliptical base at the spring arm and defines a major axis of the ellipse generally parallel to the longitudinal axis of the arm and a minor axis generally perpendicular to the longitudinal axis.

A memoτy card connector (20), comprising: aniπsulativehousing (28) including amating £ιce (30) and adiruitboardmounting face (32) with at least oneteimmal-receivingpassage (34) having an opening (34a) infhematmg face of the bousing; and a terminal (40) received in said terminal-receiving passage and including an elongated spring arm (42) cantilevered inthepassage and defining alongftudinal

a dome-shaped contact portion (50) near a distal end of the cantilevered spring aim (42) projecting through the opening in the mating face of the housing and defining an oval- shaped convex contact surface (50), the oval-shaped convex contact surface (50) having an elliptical base (68) at the spring arm (42) and defining amaj or axis of the ellipse generally parallel to the longitudinal axis
(66) of the arm and a minor axis generally perpendicular to the longitudinal axis, and the oval-shaped convex contact surface (50) having a steep-sloped contact face
(50a) on a side thereof facing in a direction generally parallel to the longitudinal axis (66) of the elongated spring aim (42) and a gentle-sloped contact face (50b) on a side thereof facing in a direction generally perpendicular to the longitudinal axis (66) of the elongated spring arm (42).
2. The emory card connector Of claim 1 wherein said contact faces (50a,50b) arc generally triangularly-shaped with corners of the triangles coincident with an apex of th<_ι convex contact surface (50).
3. The memory card connector of claim 1, including a pair of said steep-sloped contactfaces (50a) at diametrically opposite sides ofthe oval-shaped convex contact surface (50) and facing in a direction generally parallel to the longitudinal axis (66) of he elongated spring aim (42).
4. Thememory card connector of claim 3, including apair of said gentle-sloped contact faces (50b) at diametrically opposite sides ofthe oval-shaped convex: contact surface (50) and facing in a direction generally perpendicular to the longitudinal axis (66) ofthe elongated spring arm (42).
5. The memory card connector of claim 4. including smooth transition face sections (50c) smoothly joining said steep-sloped contact faces (50a) and said gentle-sloped contact faces (50b).
6. Thememory card connector of claim 1 wherein s-ridteαriinal (40) is generally U-shaρedtodefineaj^stleg(42)joittedtoasecondleg(44)byaαuyedspringsecώon(46),the first leg forming said elongated spring arm, and the second leg being connected to the circuit board.
7. The memory card connector of claim 6 wherein said second leg (44) of he U- shaped terminal (40) includes amountingpost (54) securely fixedin amountinghole (36) in the insulative housing (28).
8. The memory card connector of claim 6 wherein said second leg (44) includes a contact foot (48) for connection to an appropriate circuit trace on the circuit board.
9. Theme oxy card connector of claim 1 , including complementatyinterengaging anti-overstress means (52,60) between the insulative housing (28) and the elongated spring arm
(42) at the distal end of he ami to limit the extent to which the dome-shaped contact portion (50) can project through the opening (34a) in the mating face (30) ofthe housing.
