Description

A DEVICE AT A BLANKET CYLINDER
Technical Field
The present invention relates to a device at a blanket cylinder for a printing press, provided on its circumferential surface with a blanket comprising rubber on a metal backing sheet, whose rubber free end portions are adapted to be bent down and removably attached in a longitudinal slit in the blanket cylinder, leaving a longitudinal or axial gap between the rubber ends of the blanket, a separate filler being provided in the gap, substantially filling the gap.
Background of the Invention
As is well known in the printing industry, one cylinder in an offset printing press is a blanket cylinder, provided on its surface with a so called blanket, normally made of rubber.
The blanket, which has to be replaced at intervals, may be built-up of several rubber layers with different properties and may have a backing in the form of a metal sheet . The total thickness of the blanket may be in the order of 2 mm, and the metal sheet may have a thickness of say 0.2 mm.
The blanket may be attached to the blanket cylinder in that rubber-free end portions of the metal sheet are bent down and attached in a longitudinal slit in the cylinder, leaving a longitudinal or axial gap of say 3 mm between the ends of the rubber blanket proper on the cylinder. This gap will tend to be filled with paper fibres, ink residues, fountain solution and the like, a problem which is accentuated at the known use of a blanket washer with a cleaning cloth. The problem is worsened because of the sharp edges of the rubber blanket and the small width of the gap. The problem may be solved by a separate filler in the gap, permanently attached by an adhesive, by vulcanization or by chemical bonding.
The Invention Another and in many instances more convenient solution is according to the invention attained in that the filler is integrally connected to a flange to be pushed down between the bent down metal backing sheet end portions and attached therewith in the blanket cylinder. Embodiments are covered by dependent claims.
Brief Description of the Drawing
The invention will be described in further detail below under reference to the accompanying drawing, in which Figs 1 and 2 in side views show a certain portion of a blanket cylinder for a printing press with a blanket mounted on its surface; each Figure shows an embodiment of the present invention.
Detailed Description of Preferred Embodiments
A portion of a blanket cylinder 1 is shown in both Figures. On its circumferential surface the blanket cylinder 1 is provided with a blanket, generally denoted 2. The blanket 2 normally comprises rubber 3 (preferably several layers of rubber with different properties) on a metal backing sheet 4. The thickness of the blanket 2 may be in the order of 2 mm, whereof the thickness of the backing sheet 4 may comprise say 0.2 mm.
The end portions 4' of the backing sheet 4 in the axial or longitudinal direction of the blanket cylinder 1 are free from rubber 3 and are used for removably attaching the blanket 2 to the blanket cylinder 1. The end portions 4 ' are namely bent inwardly or down and pushed into an axial or longitudinal slit 5 in the blanket cylinder 1, where they may be clamped for example by means of a wedge device 1' or attached in another convenient way. Hereby a longitudinal or axial gap 6 with a width of say 3 mm is left between the edges of the rubber 3 on the surface of the blanket cylinder 1. This gap 6 may at use be filled with paper fibres, printing ink, fountain solution and the like, especially if a blanket washer with a cleaning cloth is utilized for cleaning purposes. This is not desirable.
As shown in Fig 1, the gap 6 may be substantially filled by a strip or gap filler 7. This strip may be made of rubber, plastic or the like. The strip 7 is connected to a flange 8 of thin metal or plastic material. Concurrently with the attachment of the blanket 2 by means of the metal sheet end portions 4', the flange 8 is pushed down between these portions and then clamped by means of the wedge 1'. The flange 8 may alternatively be attached to the cylinder 1 in other ways .
A second embodiment is shown in Fig 2. Here the gap filler 7' is comprised of an integral extension of the flange 8' bent to a proper shape for substantially filling the gap 6.
The material of the strip shall preferably be able to withstand the effects of printing ink, fountain solution and washing liquid for a period of a year or more.
As the rubber material of the blanket is slightly compressible and subjected to wear, the upper surface of the strip shall preferably be below the initial blanket surface (by for example 0.1 mm) .
