Definitions
- This invention concerns a method for managing connection to computer networks such as the Internet.
- the invention refers to a method, and computer program, for managing the connection of an electronic apparatus to telephone access points of a communication network and for supporting the addressing of special pages and services on said network.
- the access points to computer based communication networks such as the Internet
- ISP Internet Service Provider
- Said ISP servers store all users' identification data, and offer to the users memory resources suitable for providing services such as electronic mail or access to sites on the net, said access being or not, assisted by search procedures, electronic archives where each user can save its own data, commercial news or other typed of news, and other additional services.
- the cheapness of use of the Internet is directly proportional to the cost of the telephone connection between the users' electronic apparatus and the access point to the network. Furthermore, it is more and more difficult to get fast connected to the net from cheap access points, that is points included in the user's telephone district or area, or in very near areas.
- the user chooses a provider among the Internet Service Providers with whom he has a supply contract; after that choice, he must expect that the telephone number he chose and stored for that provider be free and that authorization be provided by the ISP server according to a specific access protocol; only in that way, after dialling said number, telephone connection to the internet can be established.
- the user has to repeat the above procedure, ttying again with the same provider or choosing another one, but always by single attempts, until he finds the point from which he is able to access the internet.
- a method for accessing to a computer based communication network is disclosed.
- an automatic dialling of telephone numbers corresponding to the access points (POPs) of specific Internet Service Providers (ISP) is executed in order to fasten and simplify the access and to obtain the minimal connection cost during the browsing on Internet.
- the dialled access points (POPs) are in the same geographic area, or a nearby area, to the one where the user apparatus is located. That is achieved by:
- dials are repeated for a fixed number of times and, after that, the user is asked to provide new parameters for searching the telephone numbers to be dialled, or to provide a simple authorization to proceed according to previous parameters.
- This invention aims to provide a method for improving the user connection to a computer based communication network, such as the
- Such aim is achieved by a method, and related computer program, for managing connection to a computer based communication network, such as the Internet, according to the steps of:
- the invention method provides, upon said connection, an automatic updating of a file of access point telephone numbers and of the computer program resident onto said apparatus, in order eventually to change the interface graphic lay-out, the function activation buttons names and the network addresses of the associated pages and services on the communication network.
- the method also provides the step of making, through said graphic interface, a choice of the connection mode, either by connecting to specific access points or to other access points selected through automatic search procedures.
- the method provides for the execution of an access attempt through dialling said access point telephone number, while, in case of connection through automatic search, a well defined geographic area where accessing the internet is determined, then, a series of telephone numbers of said area belonging to the Internet Service Providers whom the user has a supplying contract with is extracted from the specific electronic file memorized in the above mentioned apparatus.
- a series of dials is performed in order to attempt to connect to the network, dialling stopping as soon as one of the calls is successful!
- the method provides for the dialling of the telephone number of a virtual access point associated to the above Internet Service Provider.
- First installation of said electronic file onto the user's connection apparatus can be carried out by transporting data from an optic, magnetic or other type of memory support, or by downloading directly from the network.
- the method may be carried out even by means of any electronic apparatus with hardwired or programmable logic, or by means of any other apparatus including storage means and processing units.
- the method of the present invention can be implemented in a sequence of instructions which can be stored on computer-readable mediums accessible by the above apparatuses and that can be executed by the related processors.
- the implementation of the invention method determines undoubted advantages as regards the user connection to computer based communication network and the subsequent browsing on said network.
- the user can, in fact, access the communication network in a flexible way and can have a continuous and complete control of the connection by a powerful graphic interphace always available on the visualization means of the connection apparatus.
- figure 1 shows a general scheme concerning network connection operators, and their relationships, according to the invention method
- FIG. 2 shows a flow-chart of the procedure's operations for managing the connection to a communications network according to the present invention
- a computers network such as the Internet
- the servers (11) of three Internet Service Providers of said network are respectively labelled with "ISP a", “ISP b” and “ISP c"' and are connected each other by proper transmission lines of said world wide communication network.
- the connection of internet users with said servers is carried out by means of local accessing points POP (Point of Presence), 12, widely distributed on various geographical areas (telephone districts), said POP being accessible, by the users, through the common telephone network.
- POP Point of Presence
- three different geographic areas, 13, 14, 15, are put into evidence, by hatched lines, in this example.
- In the second area, 14 there is one access point to server "ISP a" and two other ones to server "ISP b".
- connection procedure manager that provides the installation and maintenance of specific computer programs, 90, and related data files, in memory means of the user apparatus to be connected to the network.
- a workflow, 100 of a connection procedure which may be carried out according to the method of the present invention, is shown.
- step 101 the user, upon the starting of said procedure, step 102, can choice between an automatic connection mode and a direct, or manual, mode, step 103.
- a dialogue graphic interface like that of fig.3, displayed on the screen of the above apparatus.
- the choice concerning the connection mode is done by the help of a graphic interface, 300, as shown in fig.4- In this last graphic, in fact, a window, 301, for inputting a number to dial directly, is provided.
- the connection is done in the automatic mode by simply specifying, into windows 302 and 303, the geographical area and zone wherein the connection is requested. Note that specific region and zone may be displayed, by default, on said windows, so that, it will be sufficient to click on the graphic button 304 for obtaining the execution of the automatic connection mode.
- This mode comprises the extraction of ISP phone numbers, related to the above specified geographical zone, stored in the user apparatus memory means, and then, the sequential calls of said numbers. The connection is established as soon as one call is successful.
- the method of the invention may conveniently provide the call of the virtual pop number, 16, and in case that also this last call is negative, the resume of the procedure, from step 103, is accomplished. It has to be noticed that in case of choicing the direct connection mode, by writing into window 301 the number to dial, step 106, the number itself may be any number of phisical or virtual access points of any ISP whom the user is properly identified.
- buttons, 306 — 310 provided on said interface, step 108.
- said buttons provide the activation of services, 306 - 308, like "e-mail”, “technical support” or “contact”, and the addressing of special pages, 309 — 310, as "news” and “events", regarding the supply of specific informations on line.
- a further feature of the interface graphic is constitued by the providing of an apposite window, 311, wherein a specific number may be inputted, said number being the code required to access the external line when the apparatus to be connected is comprised in a local telephone network controlled by; central exchange.
- an updating of the connection procedure and data files of telephone numbers stored in the computer-readable mediums of the user's apparatus is done. This operation is carried out transparently, that is, without any extra input from the user, by means of one of the services supplied to the user by the Internet Service Provider, which receive from the connection procedure manager, 50, new releases of the above computer program and send them to the user by means of file transfer service, FTP, or other services.
- This is schematically shown in phase 109 of the flow-chart of fig. 2-
- the direct connection mode is excluded; in fact, there is not any window wherein a specific telephone number can be inputted.
- the user has the possibility of closing the connection through the graphic interface, step 110, by using a specific graphic button, 210.
- buttons, 404, 410 are placed over the "connection status" window, 405.
- buttons, 406, 408 are used to activate "e-mail” and “technical support” services, while the other buttons, 407, 409, are used to request the special pages named "news" and "products”.
- Both graphics 200, 400 comprise the specific window, 211, 411, for inputting the telephone code useful to access the external line, but obviously, other graphic lay-out may be provided, according to the invention method, wherein said window may be omitted. Even in such eventuality, however, the characteristics of the method and consequent benefits are save, as well as in case of further modifications to what has been above disclosed by way of examples.
- the determination of the geographic area for access — through specific windows 302, 303 or the like - can be done by operating consecutive choices of growing geographic delimitation.
- the land geographic division, on which the above choices are based may obviously vary according to variation of distribution of the selected ISP's access points. Nevertheless, each new possible geographic division is automatically registered both in the new releases of the file of telephone numbers and in the new releases of computer programs, 90, stored in the users' apparatus.
- a sequence of instructions relating to the method, or to one of its parts, can be memorized onto the memory units of the apparatus used for connection, either by copying it from portable memory supports or by downloading from the network.
- the method for user connection is applied by usual computers provided with standard interfaces toward the user and the network, as well as new technology apparatus provided with specific means for digital transmission of data through telephone lines, in addition to memory and processing units.
