Description

MOBT E APPARATUS FOR HA1 DLL G BULK MATERIAL
This invention relates to a mobile apparatus for handling bulk material.
The present invention has been developed primarily in connection with the handling of bulk material which is intended to be screened subsequently e.g. by a single or multi-deck screening plant, or a "trommel". However, it should be understood that this is only a preferred utilisation of the invention, and that the invention may be applied in the handling of other types of bulk material.
According to the invention there is provided a mobile apparatus for handling bulk material and which comprises: a chassis; moving means supporting the chassis and operative to move the apparatus over the ground; a hopper for receiving a supply of bulk material, said hopper being mounted on the chassis so as to be adjustable in height above the ground; conveying means arranged to convey the bulk material from the hopper to a discharge position; and, a rotatable mounting which allows the hopper and the conveying means to be adjustable about an upright axis in order to angularly adjust the discharge position of the conveying means.
The invention therefore provides a material handling apparatus which is (a) mobile and (b) easily adjustable in regard to angular adjustment of the discharge point for the bulk material, so that the apparatus can be used in confined spaces, and can use the space available to improved efficiency.
Preferably, the moving means comprises a pair of short endless tracks, which allow the apparatus to be easily manoeuvred on site, and also on rough ground conditions.
The hopper and the conveying means are preferably mounted as a unit on telescopically adjustable columns, to allow the receiving height of the hopper to be adjusted to suit operating conditions, and according to the nature of the loading vehicle. Alternatively, the height adjustment may be provided by a scissors-type of mechanism.
The conveying means preferably comprises an endless conveyor, which extends generally horizontally, or at a slight angle to the horizontal, and any suitable receiving apparatus may be arranged below the discharge position, such as a further conveyor and / or an input to a screening plant, or trommel.
Conveniently, the conveyor is mounted on the base of the hopper and effectively forms all or part of the floor of the hopper.
The rotatable mounting preferably takes the form of a turntable having a slew ring with outwardly extending gear teeth driven by an input pinion mounted on the chassis. Alternatively, a fixed slew ring may be provided on the chassis, having inwardly extending gear teeth, and the turntable may carry on its periphery a drive pinion which engages the teeth of the fixed slew ring.
A preferred embodiment of material handling apparatus according to the invention will now be described in detail, by way of example only, with reference to the perspective illustration in the accompanying drawings.
Referring now to the drawing, a mobile material handling apparatus according to the invention is designated generally by reference 10, and which comprises a chassis 11, and moving means supporting the chassis and operative to move the apparatus over the ground, and in the illustrated embodiment such moving means taking the form of a pair of short endless tracks 12.
A receiving hopper 13 is provided on the apparatus to receive a supply of bulk material at a closed input end 18, the hopper 13 being mounted on the chassis 11 in such a way as to be adjustable in height above the ground, to vary the receiving height of the material according to operating requirements, and depending also upon the nature of the loading vehicle.
The hopper 13 is formed as a unit with a conveying means, which is arranged to convey the bulk material from the hopper 13 to a discharge position. In the preferred embodiment, as illustrated, the conveying means takes the form of an endless conveyor 14 which discharges bulk material via an open discharge end 19 of the hopper 13. The conveyor 14 therefore is mounted on the base of the hopper 13 and effectively forms all or part of the floor of the hopper. However, it should be understood that other arrangements may be provided, to form the conveying means, provided only that such arrangements are suitable for conveying the particular bulk material concerned, and can include e.g. an auger. A rotatable mounting is provided, which allows the hopper 13 and the conveyor 14 to be adjustable as a unit about an upright axis 15, in order to angularly adjust the discharge position of the conveyor 14.
The hopper 13 and conveyor 14 are mounted as a unit on telescopically adjustable columns 16, to allow the receiving height of the hopper 13 to be adjusted to suit requirements.
The rotatable mounting of the hopper 13 and conveyor 14 comprises a rotatable platform 17, and which preferably is mounted directly on the chassis 11, below the conveyor 14, as shown. However, other arrangements of the platform are possible, including mounting above the conveyor 14 (not shown).
The platform 17 forms abase of the unit (hopper 13, conveyor 14 and support columns 16) , and may have a slew ring (not shown) with outwardly extending teeth which engage with an input pinion of a drive motor 20 mounted at a fixed location on the chassis 11, and which is operative to rotate the platform 17. Alternatively, though not shown, a fixed slew ring may be provided on the chassis, having inwardly extending teeth, and the platform may carry on its periphery a drive pinion which engages the teeth of the fixed slew ring, to apply rotation to the platform (turntable).
Although not shown, a further conveyor, and / or an input to a screening device/ plant or trommel may be arranged to receive material from the discharge point of the conveyor 14, in order to carry out further handling and processing of the bulk material. In one preferred arrangement an input end of a generally horizontal trommel (not shown) may be mounted rotatably, and in cantilever manner, on vertical end faces 21 provided at the open discharge end 19 of the hopper 13.
The hopper may be a mixer-type of hopper e.g. for containing liquid cement / ballast (mortar), and may have an agitator and / or a screw discharge arrangement.
