  • FIG. 1 illustrates a swivel assembly 10 constructed and operative in accordance with an embodiment of the invention.
  • Swivel assembly 10 may be pivotably connected to a firearm 70 and a firearm assembly 60, such as the firearm assembly described in US Patent 6,543,173.
  • Firearm assembly 60 may comprise a support stock 62 having a stock trigger 64 and a barrel 66.
  • Firearm 70 may comprise, without limitation, a handgun, revolver, pistol, submachine gun, or rifle.
  • Firearm 70 may comprise a firearm trigger 72 and a barrel 74.
  • Swivel assembly 10 may releasably lock firearm 70 at an angle relative to support stock 62, as is now described.
  • Swivel assembly 10 may comprise a firearm support member 12 adapted to support firearm 70, and a barrel attachment member 14 pivoted with respect to firearm support member 12.
  • a firearm holder 54 may be attached to firearm support member 12.
  • Firearm holder 54 may comprise a set of rollers 55 that secure firearm 70 in place.
  • Firearm support member 12 may comprise a body 30 with mounting holes 31 formed therein for attaching firearm holder 54 thereto. Mounting holes 31 may or may not be threaded.
  • a guide member 32 may extend from body 30, formed with an arcuate track 33. Predefined angular stops 34 may be formed along track 33. Stops 34 may comprise counterbores or countersinks drilled or otherwise formed along track 33 at any desired angular position, such as but not limited to, 0°, -60° and +60° with respect to a longitudinal axis 63 (Fig. 21) of support stock 62.
  • a spindle 35 may pass through holes 36 (Fig.
  • biasing device 37 may be provided, such as but not limited to, a coil spring wound about spindle 35. As described further hereinbelow, biasing device 37 may impart a force that urges firearm support member 12 to swivel with respect to barrel attachment member 14 about an axis 38 (Fig. 4) of spindle 35. In the illustrated embodiment, wherein biasing device 37 comprises a coil spring, the end of the spring may be wound against a post 40 and/or tongue 41 protruding from body 30.
  • Barrel attachment member 14 may comprise a block 21 with attachment holes 22 (Figs. 2 and 4) formed therein for attachment to barrel 66 of stock support 62. Attachment holes 22 may or may not be threaded. Barrel attachment member 14 may comprise a tongue 23 (Figs. 2 and 4) which may be pivotally assembled with firearm support member 12 by means of spindle 35, which passes freely through holes 36 (Fig. 21) formed in body 30 of firearm support member 12 and freely through a hole 24 (Fig. 4) formed through tongue 23. (Barrel attachment member 14 is omitted in Fig. 3 for clarity.) Barrel attachment member 14 may be formed with a bore 27 which may receive therein a locking element 26. Locking element 26 may comprise a pin with a counterbore 19 (Fig. 22) formed therein, in which a spring 28 is disposed. Locking element 26 may be shaped to fit in angular stops 34 of firearm support member 12, as seen in Fig. 3. As seen in Fig. 22, spring 28 may abut against block 21.
  • locking element 26 may be moved between a locked orientation and an unlocked orientation.
  • locked orientation locking element 26 engages one of the stops 34 and prevents swiveling movement of firearm support member 12 with respect to barrel attachment member 14.
  • locked orientation locking element 26 locks barrel attachment member 14 with respect to guide member 32 at one of the stops 34.
  • unlocked orientation locking element 26 is not engaged in one of the stops 34 and permits swiveling movement of firearm support member 12 with respect to barrel attachment member 14.
  • Locking element 26 may be moved by means of a lifting mechanism 42.
  • Lifting mechanism 42 may comprise a handle 43 which pivots about a pivot 44 formed in a block 48.
  • Handle 43 may be shaped like the bottom of a handgrip of a rifle, for example.
  • Handle 43 may have a tongue 45 arranged to move against a large-head pin 46, which may slide in a bore 47 formed in block 48, biased by a spring 49.
  • a stem of the pin 46 may pass through a cylindrical guide 80 and may be held in place by a retainer 81.
  • the head of pin 46 may be biased against cylindrical guide 80 by a spring 82 smaller and concentric with spring 49.
  • a shear line 83 may be defined between firearm support member 12 and barrel attachment member 14. In the illustrated embodiment, as seen in Fig. 22, shear line 83 may be defined at the interface between the upper surface (upper in the sense of Fig. 22) of guide member 32 and the lower surface of block 21 of barrel attachment member 14.
  • Figs. 1-4 illustrate swivel assembly 10 in a nominal position, wherein locking element 26 is seated in the angular stop 34 formed in track 33 of guide element 32 at 0° with respect to longitudinal axis 63 (Fig. 21) of support stock 62. At this position, firearm 70 may be pointed and fired straight with respect to support stock 62.
  • Figs. 5-8 illustrate swivel assembly 10 with handle 43 pivoted downwards in the direction of an arrow 84.
  • handle 43 lifts pin 46 and the end of pin 46 abuts against locking element 26.
  • Pin 46 pushes locking element 26 out of angular stop 34 to the shear line 83. Once locking element 26 is at the shear line 83, firearm support member 12 is no longer in a locked orientation with barrel attachment member 14.
  • Figs. 9-12 illustrate swivel assembly 10 with handle 43 swiveled in an azimuthal direction indicated by an arrow 85.
  • the azimuthal rotation of handle 43 rotates guide element 32, and locking element 26 freely moves in track 33 until it seats in another angular stop 34, such as at 60° with respect to longitudinal axis 63 (Fig. 21) of support stock 62.
  • Handle 43 causes rotation of guide element 32 because pin 46 engages both guide element 32 and block 48.
  • Firearm support member 12 is now once again locked with respect to barrel attachment member 14, but this time with firearm 70 angled with respect to support stock 62. At this position, a person (not shown) may hold support stock 62 and use firearm 70 to shoot around a corner, for example.
  • Figs. 13-16 illustrate swivel assembly 10 with handle 43 returned to its nested position relative to support stock 62.
  • Locking element 26 remains seated in angular stop 34, and firearm support member 12 is still locked with respect to barrel attachment member 14 at an angle with respect to support stock 62.
  • Figs. 17-20 illustrate swivel assembly 10 with handle 43 once again pivoted downwards in the direction of arrow 84.
  • handle 43 lifts pin 46 and the end of pin 46 abuts against locking element 26.
  • Pin 46 pushes locking element 26 out of angular stop 34 to the shear line 83.
  • Biasing device 37 imparts a force that urges firearm support member 12 to swivel with respect to barrel attachment member 14 about axis 38 (Fig. 4) of spindle 35, thereby returning swivel assembly 10 to its nominal position (Figs. 1-4), wherein locking element 26 is seated in the angular stop 34 at 0° with respect to longitudinal axis 63 (Fig.
  • the swivel assembly 10 may be used to provide cable connections between support stock 62 and firearm 70.
  • one or more cables 90 may pass through barrel attachment member 14.
  • cable 90 may comprise a trigger cable that couples stock trigger 64 to a finger 92 on firearm holder 54, wherein finger 92 is arranged to actuate firearm trigger 72.
  • Pulling stock trigger 64 causes cable 90 to pull finger 92 and firearm trigger 72, thereby firing the firearm 70.
  • a person holding support stock 62 may actuate the firing mechanism of firearm 70 from a remote location, such as around a corner.
  • cable 90 may comprise an electric wire or a fiber optic filament, such as for displaying images of a target to which firearm 70 is pointing.
