Abstract

This invention relates to a metal tile. More specifically the invention relates to the manufacture of a steel tile by pressing and cutting metal in a predetermined shape and/or size and the use of a liner which is fixed on the underside of the tile to allow it to be laid like any other ceramic tile and to avoid the problems encountered when covering surfaces with sheet metal.

Description

STEEL TILE
INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND
This Invention relates to the manufacture of a steel tile, more specifically the present
invention relates to the manufacture of a steel tile by pressing and cutting the metal in a
predetermined shape and/or size and the use of a liner which is fixed on the underside of the
tile to allow it to be laid like any other ceramic tile and to avoid the problems encountered
when covering surfaces with sheet metal.
With the introduction of steel plate or surface covering in industry and even home and office
applications, one was limited to the features and physical characteristics and limitations of
the metal sheets that was used, the metal sheets are difficult to cut and fix and the surfaces
which are covered is not always perfect and may have different elevations and uneven
shapes which are revealed when covered with metal such as stainless steel cladding or floor
coverings,
The existing problem of coarse is that although the metal sheeting is perfect it is difficult to
shape, cut and apply on large surfaces and imperfections in the surface it is fixed to is
transferred to the metal covering. Also it requires the expertise of a specialist metal worker
or someone with experience, a tiler would be unable to work with the metal in the way he or she works with tiles.
Should there be a simplified method and system that allows for the metal to be laid like
conventional tiles, the same look and feel is given without the problems encountered when
covering a desired surface with straight metal sheets or coverings. This invention aims to
prevent these problems by means of converting the metal sheets into tiles which are made
in a predetermined form and size. Also the edges may be bent or angled to for a slope or
curve to give it tile like appearance; this is also needed when a requirement is made to grout
the surface with a grouting substance. The problem now is that the metal tile or tile shape
is not suited as-is to be laid or fixed to a surface. The present invention claims the use of a
liner or support member which is fixed to the underside of the tile so that the metal tile may
be applied to a surface like any other tile, This liner may typically be made of a PVC or
plastic substance. In use presently is stainless steel cladding or floor covering which may be
applied now in tile form.
OBJECT OF THE INVENTION
Accordingly it is an object of the present invention to provide a method and system for the
manufacture of a steel tile , and with which the applicant believes disadvantages of known
methods of applying ,metal sheeting or surfacing may at least be alleviated.
Furthermore the present invention aims to enable any tiler to apply metal finishes and
coverings to surfaces by transforming the metal in a tile format and by giving the tiles a
lining which makes it easier to lay and to plan and apply the tiles to any surface irrespective
if it is on a wall, ground or ceiling.
Also the invention would incur a cost saving as lesser amounts of metal sheets is wasted and
when a surface is damaged, only a tile is replaced and not the whole surface.
SUMMARY
According to the 1st aspect of the invention there is included a method of manufacturing e
metal tile, the method including the steps of:
- cutting and forming a metal sheet in predetermined shape, and
- fixing a liner to the underside of the tile
According to the 2nd aspect of the invention the metal sheet may typically be any one or more
of: stainless steel, mild steel, rolled steel or pressed steel.
According to the 3rd aspect of the invention the step of cutting of the sheet may include the
pressing or cutting the metal sheet to a size and geometrical shape such as a squire, diamond
or the like.
According to the 4th aspect of the invention the step of forming of the metal sheet may
include bending one or more of the sides or edges to a predetermined angel or slope.
According to the 5th aspect of the invention the predetermined shape may be according to
custom design or in relation to standardized sizes used in industry, According to the 6th aspect of the invention the liner may be the same shape or a different
shape of the tile.
According to the 7th aspect of the invention the liner may be made from one or more of the
following materials; PVC, Plastic, ceramics, carbo fibre, stone or composite materials
According to the 8th aspect of the invention the liner may be fixed to the metal tile by means
of one or more of; a glue, a contact adhesive, a spray, a weld, or physical attachments such
as hooks, plates or the like.
According to the 9th aspect of the invention the liner may be manufactured to have an
optimal bottom surface to enable laying of the tiles to a surface.
According to the 10th aspect of the invention the liner may be manufactured to have an
optimal top surface to enable fixing to the metal sheet or tile.
According to the 11th aspect of the invention there is included a metal tile, said tile
comprising:
- metal sheet, cut and formed a in predetermined shape, and
a liner fixed to the underside of the tile. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
The present invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying diagrams
, flow and process charts without implying any limitations to the invention of which:
Figure 1 is a first embodiment of the invention 1 including a steel or ferrous tile;
Figure 2 relates to the method of manufacture of a steel tile;
Figure 3 shows the top view of the tile showing the metal side and a side view of the
tile;
Figure 4 shows the underside of the tile and is used to explain how the tile is made;
Figure 5 shows views of the tile when completed; and
Figure 6 shows various tile surface shapes and textures which can be applied in
industry.
DESCRIPTIONS OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS
Turning to Figure 1 which is a first embodiment of the invention 1 including a steel or
ferrous tile or plate 2 with a round or inclined edge 3 for use on a floor, wall or the like, the
tile including a liner 4 which is fixed to the steel tile or plate preferably by means of a
suitable adhesive. In use the liner may be made of a PVC or plastic material which allows
the steel tile to be fixed easily to any surface using conventional tiling glue or adhesive used
with any other ceramic tile or the like. Also the liner allows the steel tile or plate to be
spaced evenly and were extra cutting or filling is needed it eliminates the problems
experienced with metal and sheet covering. The type of steel may be of any sort such as
stainless steel or the like or any other ferrous/iron type material.
Figure 2 relates to the method of manufacture of a steel tile 5 the method including the first
step 6 of pressing 8 a metal or stainless steel plate 7 into a form to obtain a desired form or
look i.e. bent or inclined edges 10. The next step 11 includes the fixing or bonding 14 of
PVC or plastic layer 12 to the metal or pre-pressed plate or tile 9 to form a usable tile 15.
The PVC or plastic layer 13 is shaped as to optimize use as a tile including feet or extrusions
13 to enable it to have a better and more effective fit or mount when used or applied against
surfaces such as floors and walls or the like. The shape of the liner is such that it aids in
fixing the metal tile to a surface, also the liner fits within the circumfice of the tile interior and the inclined edges covers and protects the bonding of the glue side between the metal
sheet or tile and the PVC or plastic lines to form a workable easy to use tile 16.
Figure 3 shows the top view of the tile showing the metal side 17 and a side view of the tile
18.
Turning to Figure 4 which shows the underside of the tile and is used to explain how the tile
is made 19 by means of a PVC or plastic liner 21 which fits inside the tile 20 in a
predetermined position 22 by means of a glue or adhesive 23 which is applied to either the
tile or the liner or both.
Figure 5 shows views 24 of the tile when completed including a bottom view 25 showing
the PVC or plastic liner and a top view 26 with the metal or stainless steel look and tile
surface.
Figure 6 shows various tile surface shapes and textures which can be applied in industry and
for office and home use. Also when factory law or architect specifications require a certain
type of cladding or floor surface the tile may be made from the specific metal type, shape or
texture as required.
