Description

LID WITH TAMPER EVIDENCE
The invention relates to a lid for closing a container.
A multiplicity of different shapes of lids are available in the prior art for closing a container. Lids are available with a screwable connection for connecting to a container. Presently it is, especially when a container and lid is used for food stuff, desired to have an indication whether the lid has been yet opened. Such an indication is called a tamper evidence. Lids with tamper evidence are also known. In order to open such lids, a tamper evidence has to be removed or has to be deformed before the lid can be opened. This provides for an additional act when opening a container with a lid. So when opening such a lid further the tamper evidence has to be actuated and then the lid can be screwed off.
Therefore it is an object of the invention to provide a lid which can be opened by performing just one act.
This object is achieved by a lid according to the invention which lid comprises an overhanging peripheral edge having connecting means for a screwable connection with the container and tamper evidence means pivotably arranged in the peripheral edge between a first position and a second position and having an actuating surface for actuation by an actuating member on the container to pivot the tamper evidence means from the first to the second position.
Upon opening the lid according to the invention, an actuating member of the container actuates the pivotably arranged tamper evidence means. So when the lid is opened, it can be seen that the lid has been opened as the tamper evident means are pivoted from the first position to the second position. This pivoting further provides the advantage that the tamper evidence means stay connected to the lid
5 preventing it to fall into the container.
In a preferred embodiment the tamper evidence means comprise a fracture part for locking the tamper evidence means in the first position. When the tamper evidence means are actuated, the fracture part will break providing an
.0 additional indicator that the lid has been opened.
In another embodiment of the lid according to the invention the connecting means comprise helically arranged ribs. Furthermore, the lid could comprise a circumferential sealing. This sealing could be a moisture curable silicone
.5 elastomer.
In another preferred embodiment of a lid according to the invention, the tamper evidence means are wedge shaped having at least a base surface, a sloping surface and an actuating surface perpendicular to the base surface, wherein iO the base surface is, in the first position, substantially parallel to the surface of the peripheral edge. This provides for an esthetic appearance of the lid and provides furthermore the necessary functionality. In yet another preferred embodiment of a lid according to the invention, at
!5 least the tamper evidence means comprise a thermoplastic material and wherein the pivoting of the tamper evidence means causes crazing in the thermoplastic material. When a thermoplastic material is subjected to high stresses, small cracks occur in the material, which are visible as white i0 lines. This crazing is irreversible so when the tamper evidence means are pivoted from the first to the second position, an irreversible indicator is created. The invention also relates to a combination of a lid according to the invention and a container, wherein the container comprises a bottom, an upstanding wall defining a mouth opening, connection means arranged near the mouth opening for connection with the lid, and actuating means for actuation of the lid.
The actuating means of the container could comprise a protrusion arranged on the upstanding wall near the mouth ring. This protrusion could be a pin or in the case the connection means of the container comprise helically arranged ribs, such a rib could be the protrusion.
Furthermore, the container could comprise a sealing surface preferably arranged around the mouth opening.
These and other advantages will be further described in conjunction with the accompanying drawing.
Figure 1 shows an embodiment of a container according to the invention.
Figure 2 shows a cross-sectional view of two containers according to figure 1 stacked on top of each other and one of them closed with a lid according to the invention.
Figure 3 shows a detailed view of the ring of the lid according to the invention.
Figure 4 shows a cross section of top view of the connection between a container and lid according to the invention.
Figure 1 shows a polypropylene container 1 according to the invention. This container comprises a bottom 2 and a standing peripheral wall 3, which is formed monolithically therewith and which bounds on it's free side remote from bottom 2 a mouth opening 4 with a mouth ring 5, on which peripheral wall 3 an outward extending peripheral flange 6 is present, which connects to peripheral wall 3 at some distance from mouth ring 5, such that a end part 7 of peripheral wall 3 remains free and is available for coupling to an edge 8 of a polypropylene lid 9. On the outside of the mouth ring 5 helically arranged ribs 25 are arranged, which go co-acts screwingly with ribs 26, which are arranged on the edge end of the lid 9. Peripheral flange 6 comprises a first flange part 10 extending more or less transversely of preferable wall 3 and, connecting their to, a downward extending second flange part 11 with a lower free end edge 12 wherein the main plane of the bottom 2 and the planes through the mouth ring 5 and the lower free end edge 12 are all substantially flat and substantially mutual parallel.
On the second flange part 11 are two hand grips 13 placed mutually diagonally. Each handgrip 13 is embodied as a cowl-like outward protruding part of the second flange part 11 and comprises a first handgrip part 14 extending outward relative thereto, a downward extending second handgrip part 15 connected thereto and to support shores 16 each connected to second flange part 11 and the peripheral ends of the first handgrip part 14 and second handgrip part 15, wherein the lower edge 17 of second handgrip part 15 lies substantially in the plane of the lower end edge 12. The lower edges 18 of shores 16 also lie in the plane of lower free end edge 12.
A carrying handle 19 is peripherally connected to second flange part 11. A simple embodiment has a special feature that in the region of the handgrips 13 the second flange part 11 has trough-holes into which a widened pin is placed which is connected to handle 19 to thus pivotably connect handle 19 to second flange part 11.
Figure 2 shows that container 1 is stack able in nested in manner with a similar container.
Figure 2 also shows that strengthening ribs 20 are arranged between the peripheral wall 3 and peripheral flange 6. These ribs 20 lie at a distance 21 from the plane of the free end edge 12 which is a chosen amount smaller than the distance between the plane of mouth ring 5 and the main plane of the first flange part 10. As shown in figure 2, a certain intermediate space thus remains between the free end edge 12 of the upper container and the upper region of the second flange part 11 of the lower container.
In figure 3 a detailed view of the lid 9 is shown. At the inside of edge 8 helically arranged ribs 26 are arranged which co-act with the ribs 25 of the container 1. In the edge 8 a tamper evident 27 is arranged, which is with one end 28 connected to the edge 8 and comprises a pivoting area. The other end comprises a fracture part 29, which will break upon actuation of the tamper evident means.
In the region of the pivoting line crazing will occur in the polypropylene material as a result of the high stresses occuring when the tamper evidence 27 is pivoted.
In figure 4 a cross-sectional top view of the tamper evidence means 27 is shown. It is clear that on the inside a wedge shaped part is present, which has a sloping surface 30 a base surface 31 and an actuating surface 32 perpendicularly to the base surface 31. When the lid 9 is rotated relative to the container 1, the helically arranged ribs 25 will get in contact with the actuating surface 32 of the tamper evidence 27. As a result the fracture part 29 will break enabling the tamper evidence to pivot from the shown first position to a second position. The tamper evidence 27 pivots along the pivoting line 28.
