Abstract

A substrate having a surface consisting of an inorganic non-metallic matrix material comprises a protective layer based on titanium oxide/cerium oxide. This protective layer can be obtained by applying a coating composition, which comprises precursors of both titanium oxide and cerium oxide, onto the surface of the substrate and by compacting the coating composition at a temperature of at least 500 °C. The coating is suited for use as a heat-resistant, UV stable, and transparent protection for inorganic non-metallic materials, particularly glass, glass ceramics and ceramics, against corrosion caused by alkaline media.
