Abstract

The invention relates to a method of analyzing a sample, and to an apparatus for such analysis. The method includes subjecting a liquid sample to high pressure fluid chromatography in a first chromatographic column (12) operating at a first temperature in order to effect partial analysis of the sample. The eluent fraction produced by the first separation is then passed through a pressure-reducing zone in fluid flow connection with the first chromatographic column, after which the eluent fraction is fed through a second chromatographic column (48) which is in fluid flow connection with the pressure-reducing zone. The temperature of the second chromatographic column (48) is then ramped independently of the first chromatographic column (12) in order to effect fast gas chromatographic separation of the eluent fraction into further fractions of differing volatilities.
