Referring to the drawings, a toilet accessory in accordance with the invention is generally indicated by reference numeral 10, and a toilet is generally indicated by reference numeral 12.
Referring to Figure 1 of the drawings, the accessory 10 includes a supply tube 14 which is connectable to a water supply pipe 16 by way of a pipe fitting 15. The pipe 16 is typically a pipe which supplies water to a cistern 18 of the toilet 12, and the accessory 10 may be fitted to an existing toilet 12 by connecting the tube 14 to the pipe 16 as described below, with reference to Figures 3 and 4 of the drawings.
The accessory 10 also includes a valve 20 disposed to shut-off a supply flow passage defined within the tube 14, selectively, by operating a valve handle 22.
The accessory 10 further includes a body 24 defining an internal discharge flow passage 25 and nozzles 26. The supply flow passage within the tube 14, the discharge flow passage 25, and the nozzles 26 are all in flow communication, so that water flowing from the tube 14 is discharged via the nozzles 26. The body 24 is mounted directly on top of the toilet bowl 28, by the tube 14 which is secured in position and resiliently attached to the body. The body 24 may further be attached to the bowl 28 with an adhesive material such as silicon sealant or double-sided adhesive tape, attached to the body and to the bowl.
The accessory 10 is installed in such a way that the body 24 is disposed centrally on a rear of the bowl 28 and is covered, at least in part, by the toilet seat 30 when lowered to a seating position, and such that the valve 20 is spaced from the body to a position adjacent the seat 30, to be accessible to a user sitting on the seat. The valve 20 is shown mounted on a wall adjacent the toilet 10, but can be mounted directly on the toilet bowl 28.
In use, the bowl 28 is used as a bidet, by opening the valve 20 and allowing water to be discharged through the nozzles 26. Once a user has finished using the bowl 28 as a bidet, the flow of water is shut off by closing the valve 20.
Referring to Figure 2 of the drawings, a second embodiment of the toilet accessory 10 includes a body 24 similar to the body 24 shown in Figure 1 of the drawings, and mounted on top of a toilet bowl 28 in a similar fashion. Further, the accessory 10 includes a reservoir 32 defining a cavity 34, and including a liquid additive dispenser in the form of a soap dispenser 36.
The cavity 34 is in flow communication with a water supply pipe
16 via a supply tube 14 and valve 20, and is in flow communication with the nozzles 26 of the body 24 via a discharge opening 38 and a discharge tube 40. An electric heating element 42 is disposed within the cavity 34 and includes a thermostat, to control the amount of heat transferred from the element 42 to water contained in the cavity 34, to heat the water to a predetermined temperature and maintain it at that temperature.
The soap dispenser 36 includes a piston pump 45, operable by way of a piston action button 44, to discharge a predetermined quantity of soap when the button 44 is pressed. The soap is discharged into the discharge tube 40, via a soap supply tube 46. The soap remains in the discharge tube 40 until the valve 20 is opened, and water from the discharge cavity 34 is mixed with the soap in the discharge tube 40, so that a soapy mixture is discharged via the nozzles 26.
In use, the cavity 34 contains about 2 litres of water, the approximate quantity of water required when using the bowl 28 as a bidet. The water inside the cavity 34 is heated to a temperature of about 40°C, and is maintained at this temperature. The temperature may be adjustable to suit requirements of different users. A user operates the accessory 10 by opening the valve 20, which causes the heated water in the cavity 34 to be displaced by water from the water supply pipe 16 and to be discharged via the discharge tube 40, through the nozzles 26. If required, the user may also operate the button 44 to discharge discreet quantity of soap via the discharge tube 40, as described above. Soap is ideally discharged in this manner at an early stage during operation of the accessory 10, e.g. before the valve 20 is opened, so that the ratio between soap and water discharged by the nozzles 26 is initially relatively high, and decreases until only water is discharged, thus allowing the user to wash using soap and water, and thereafter to rinse using only water.
The soap dispenser 36 may be used to dispense a wide variety of liquid additives, such as soap, perfume, disinfectant, moisturiser, or the like.
Referring to Figures 3 and 4 of the drawings, the supply tube 14 is tied into the water supply pipe 16 by drilling a hole into the side of the water supply pipe, inserting a tapering hollow spigot formation 50 of the pipe fitting 15 into the hole, inserting the supply tube 14 into a central passage within the pipe fitting 15, to press the walls of the spigot formation resiliently against the periphery of the hole, and gluing a radial flange 52 to an outside of the water supply pipe16. A protective cap 54 is slid onto the pipe fitting 15.
Referring to Figure 5 of the drawings, the body 24 defines a number of elongate channels 56, each extending from the internal discharge flow passage 25, to its associated nozzle 26. The elongate shape of the channels 56 allows water to exit the nozzles 26 in the desired direction. Referring to Figure 6 of the drawings, the valve 20 is housed in a housing 58, which includes a peripheral flange 60. The valve 20 can be attached to the toilet bowl 28 or to an adjacent wall by applying adhesive to the flange 60.
In other embodiment of the invention (not shown), a second body, similar to the body 24 shown in Figure 5 of the drawings, is attached centrally on the front of the toilet bowl, with its nozzles directed rearwardly. The body is supplied by water and/or soap in similar fashion as the body 24 described above, and the supply is likewise controlled by way of a valve, similar to the valve 20 shown in Figure 6 of the drawings. This embodiment allows a female user comfortably to use the toilet bowl as a bidet, with water flowing in a direction generally towards the anterior of her body, thus reducing the risk of contamination of water, if it were flowing from her posterior.
The invention illustrated holds the advantage of allowing a toilet bowl 28 to be used as a bidet, while avoiding substantial cost and space requirements of a bidet. It holds the further advantage of comfort as a result of the position of the nozzle 24 and the supply of water to the nozzle at a comfortable temperature, and holds the advantage of convenience of a soap dispenser.
