Description

CONTAINER FOR CONTAINING EGG CRATES
Technical Field
The present invention relates to an egg crate container for use in handling, transporting or merchandising eggs, and more particularly, to an egg crate container which includes opening parts formed thereon in a size large enough for a worker's hands or wrists to get into and out of side walls tliereof to releasably retain egg crates made of paperboard or synthetic resin sheet therein in a simple manner, and a plurality of reinforcing members to reinforce the side walls which are weakened because of the generation of the opening parts.
Background Art
In general, eggs are transported in egg crates made of paperboard or synthetic resin sheet because the eggs are easily broken or damaged. However, a separate container for containing a plurality of layers of egg crates has not been developed. Therefore, when there is a need to retain or transport the eggs, several egg crates containing the eggs are piled in multiple layers and then retained or transported. However, the egg crates materialized of recycled pulp or synthetic resin sheet are weak in their strength. Accordingly, the load of the egg crates is directly transferred to the eggs and thus the egg crates cannot be piled in multiple layers. Further, when the egg crates are piled in a container or a warehouse, a worker cannot step on the piled egg crates, thereby failing to use a space above the piled egg crates.
In addition, when the plurality of eggs are required to be retained and transported in general boxes, there are many cases that the boxes have no proper size or shape for the egg crates and thus the egg crates are moved within the boxes during the transportation, thereby breaking the eggs. On the other hand, even though the boxes have proper size and shape for the egg crates, there are no spaces between the side walls of the boxes and the egg crates through which the worker's hands or wrists can reach the egg crates, thereby causing much inconvenience for the worker to pull the egg crates out of the boxes or retain the egg crates in the boxes.
Disclosure of Invention
Accordingly, the present invention has been made in view of the above problems, and it is an object of the present invention is to provide a container for containing egg crates, which can retain or transport the plurality of egg crates in a state where the egg crates are piled therein.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a container for containing egg crates, which includes opening parts formed at side walls, which define an egg crate receiving space, to easily retain or take out the egg crates.
Still another object of the present invention is to provide a container for containing egg crates, which can stack or nest the egg crates according to whether or not the egg crates are empty, thereby efficiently using a space required for . retaining and piling the egg crates.
Yet another object of the present invention is to provide a container for containing egg crates, which is as lightweight as possible to minimize the manufacturing cost and physical distribution cost, and includes a plurality of flanges or projections properly formed thereon to reinforce mechanical strength of side walls for defining an egg crate receiving space, thereby protecting the egg ' crates from being torn or defoπned.
To achieve these objects in an aspect of the present invention, there is provided a container for containing egg crates including a bottom plate having a plurality of through-holes formed thereon and first and third side walls and second and fourth side walls integrally formed with the bottom plate in such a manner as to be upwardly extended from the bottom plate along the outer edge of the bottom plate such that a cubic egg crate receiving space is defined by the bottom plate and the first and third side walls and the second and fourth side walls to pile a plurality ' of egg crates therein, the first and third side walls and the second and fourth side walls, respectively, being opposite each other, wherein the first and third side walls each have an opening part formed thereon by cutting a part thereof in a size large enough for a worker's hands or wrists to enter the egg crate receiving space such that the worker's hands or wrists are allowed to reach the plurality of egg crates piled in the egg crate receiving space and a plurality of projections integrally formed therewith in such a manner that they are outwardly projected therefrom while being indented when being seen from the inside of the egg crate container, and wherein the first and third side walls and the second and fourth side walls have a horizontal flange integrally formed therewith in such a manner as to be horizontally and outwardly extended therefrom by a predetermined length - along the top edges thereof; and a vertical flange integrally fonned with the horizontal flange in such a manner as to be vertically and downwardly extended from the horizontal flange along the outer edge of the horizontal flange.
It is preferable that the first and third side walls and the second and fourth side walls, and the plurality of projections formed at the first and third side walls in which the opening parts are fonned become gradually smaller in width toward the bottom thereof.
It is preferable that the vertical flange is formed in such a manner that the length of the vertical flange fonned on the first and third side walls in which the opening parts are fonned is longer than that of the vertical flange fonned the second and fourth side walls in which the opening parts are not fonned.
It is preferable that the vertical flange formed on the second and fourth side walls in which the opening parts are not fonned includes a plurality of stoppers integrally fonned therewith for restricting the length of a first egg crate container inserted into a second egg crate container when the first egg crate container is nested in the second egg crate container. It is preferable that the projections includes central projections fonned at the lower ends of the opening parts and each of the central projections includes one or more reinforcing means integrally fonned therewith for improving the - bearing capacity thereof. In another aspect of the present invention, the first and third side walls and the second and fourth side walls, and the projections fonned on the first and third side walls in which the opening parts are fonned include a perpendicular part integrally formed at the lower portion thereof in such a manner that the width of the upper portion of the perpendicular part is the same as that of the lower portion of the peφendicular part and a slant part integrally formed at the upper portion thereof in such a manner that the width of the slant part becomes gradually smaller toward the lower portion thereof.
The container for containing egg crates constructed as above has an effect of retaining or transporting the egg crates in a state where the plurality of egg . crates are piled and easily retaining or pulling out the egg crates by fonning the opening parts on the side walls for defining the egg crate receiving space.
The container for containing egg crates has a further effect of selectively stacking or nesting the egg crates according to whether or not the egg crates are empty, thereby efficiently using a space required for retaining and piling the egg crates.
The container for containing egg crates has a still further effect of minimizing the manufacturing cost and physical distribution cost by making the egg crates as lightweight as possible and reinforcing mechanical strength of the side walls for defining the egg crate receiving space by properly fonning the flanges or projections, thereby protecting the side walls from being torn or the egg crates from being defonned.
The container for containing egg crates has another effect of reinforcing the shuctural strength of the opening parts and preventing a worker's hands from being injured by pennitting lengthwise flanges to be fonned around the opening parts in such a manner as to be outwardly bent. Best Mode for Carrying Out the Invention The present invention will now be described in detail in connection with prefened embodiments with reference to the accompanying drawings. For reference, like reference characters designate conesponding parts throughout several views.
FIG. 1 is a perspective view of a container for containing egg crates according to the present invention, FIG. 2 is enlarged perspective views illustrating opening parts and projections fonned at side walls of the egg crate container according to the present invention, and FIG. 3 is a side-sectional view illustrating the configuration of the projections according to the present invention.
Refenϊng to FIGs. 1 to 3, the egg crate container 10 according to the present invention includes a bottom plate 19 having a plurality of holes fonned thereon, and first and third side walls 15 and second and fourth side walls 17 integrally fonned with the bottom plate 19 in such a manner as to be upwardly extended from the bottom plate 19 along the outer circumference of the bottom plate 19, the first and third walls and the second and fourth side walls, respectively, being opposite each other, such that a cubic egg crate receiving space 13 is defined by the bottom plate 19 and the first and third side walls 15 and the second and fourth side walls 17. The egg crate receiving space 13, as shown in FIG. 3, allows a plurality of egg crates to be received therein. The egg crate receiving • space 13 is the same or slightly larger in size than an egg crate 60 in order to make the egg crate 60 steady therein during handling or transporting the same. Accordingly, the egg crate 60 received in the egg crate receiving space 13 is in close contact with the first and third side walls 15 and the second and fourth side walls 17 so as to be kept steady.
When the egg crate 60 is close contact with the first and third side walls 15 and the second and fourth side walls 17 of the egg crate container 10, it is difficult to pile or pull out a plurality of egg crates. To solve this problem, the present invention provides opening parts 30 on the first and third side walls 15 in a size large enough for a worker's hands or wrists to freely enter the egg crate receiving space therethrough. That is to say, as shown in FIG. 1, the opening parts 30 are formed at the central portions of the side walls 15 in such a manner that the worker's hands or wrists can freely enter the egg crate receiving space therethrough and the opening parts 30 become gradually smaller in width toward the bottom thereof. In the case where the egg crate container 10 of the present invention is made of plastic, the opening parts 30 are fonned through injection molding process. As a consequence, one egg crate can be pulled out through the opening parts 30 or several egg crates can be pulled out at once through the opening parts 30, so that the time consumed for piling the egg crates is reduced and an automatic operation can be realized to reduce physical distribution cost.
In the meantime, when the opening parts 30 are fonned on the side walls 15, the structure of the side walls 15 may become weakened. Thus, a portion of the side walls 15 in contact with the lower ends of the opening pails 30 may be torn or the egg crate container 10 may be defonned due to external force applied to the side walls 15 in which the opening parts 30 are fonned. Particularly, in the conventional art, there may happen that when a worker steps on piled egg crates while working, the piled egg crates crumble. Therefore, in the present invention, ' various reinforcing members are used to increase the mechanical strength of the side walls 15 in which the opening parts 30 are fonned.
The reinforcing members, as shown in FIG. 1, include a plurality of projections integrally fonned with the side walls 15 in which the opening parts 30 are formed. Herein, the projections are fonned such that they are outwardly projected from the side walls 15 while being indented when being seen from the inside of the egg crate container in the same shape as the outwardly projected shape. The projections include central projections 50 fonned at the central lower portion of each of the side walls 15 and side-projections 70 fonned at both sides of the central projections for being used in piling the egg crates.
First, the central projections 50 are fonned at the lower ends of the opening parts 30 in such a manner that they are outwardly projected to reinforce the side walls 15 in contact with the lower ends of the opening parts 30 and are indented when being seen from the inside of the egg crate container in the same shape as the outwardly projected shape so that the worker's hands can reach the bottom plate 19 of the egg crate container 10 through the opening parts 30. At this time, the opening parts 30 and the central projections 50 become gradually smaller in width toward the lower portions thereof so that a first egg crate container 10a can be nested in a second egg crate container 10b.
The side-projections 70, meantime, serve to improve the structural strength of the side walls 15. At the same time, the side-projections 70 guide the first egg crate container 10a to be nested in the second egg crate container 10b in case of nesting and let the lower ends of the side-projections 70 rested on flanges of the second egg crate container 10b in case of stacking, so as to protect eggs contained in the second egg crate container 10b from being damaged.
Another examples of the reinforcing members for improving the structural strength of the egg crate container 10 include a horizontal flange 23 integrally fonned with the first and third side walls 15 and the second and fourth side walls 17 in such a manner as to be horizontally and outwardly extended fonn the side walls 15 and 17 along the top edges of the side walls 15 and 17 and a vertical flange 25 integrally fonned with the horizontal flange 23 in such a manner as to be vertically and downwardly extended from the horizontal flange 23 along the outer edge of the horizontal flange 23. In particular, the length of the vertical flange 25, which is fonned at the side walls 15 in which the opening parts 30 are fonned, is longer than that of the vertical flange 25, which is fonned at the side walls 17 in which the opening parts 30 are not fonned, thereby supplementing the sh icturally weakened side walls 15 in which the opening parts 30.
By way of example, the vertical flange 25 fonned at the side walls 15 in which the opening parts 30 are fonned is longer about 1.5 times than the vertical flange 25 fonned at the side walls 17 in which the opening parts 30 are not fonned. More preferably, the vertical flange 25 fonned at both ends of the side walls 17 in which the opening parts 30 are not fonned is the same in length as the vertical flange 25 fonned at the side walls 15 in which the opening parts 30 are formed, so as to further reinforce the side walls 15 and achieve structural stability. At this" time, it is preferable that an additional plurality of stoppers 27 are formed at the vertical flange 25 of the side walls 17 in which the opening parts 30 are not fonned, so as to restrict the length of the first egg crate container 10a inserted into the second egg crate container 10b in case of nesting.
In the meanwhile, a central horizontal flange 53 and a central vertical ' flange 55 are formed at the central projections 50 formed at the lower ends of the opening parts 30 in the same manner as the aforementioned horizontal flange 23 and the vertical flange 25 to reinforce the opening parts 30 and the central projections 50. That is to say, each of the central projections 50 includes the central horizontal flange 53 integrally fonned therewith in such a manner as to be • horizontally and outwardly extended therefrom along the top edge thereof and the central vertical flange 55 integrally formed with the central horizontal flange 53 in such a manner as to be vertically and downwardly extended from the central horizontal flange 53 along the outer edge of the central horizontal flange 53. A space 55a may be formed between the rear surface of the central vertical flange 55 and the front surface of the central projection 50 (see the left enlarged view at the lower portion of FIG. 2) or the rear surface of the central vertical ' flange 55 is integrally formed with the front surface of the central projection 50 with no space therebetween (see the right enlarged view at the lower portion of FIG. 2). The latter case can solve a difficulty of cleaning the nanow space 55 a, thereby obtaining bacteriostatic effect in the space 55 a.
The egg crate container 10 further includes lengthwise flanges 44 each for - connecting the vertical flange 25 fonned at the outer edge of the horizontal flange 23 fonned at the top edges of the side walls 15 to the central vertical flange 55 to increase the structural strength of the side walls 15 and the opening members 30. Herein, the each of the lengthwise flanges 44, as shown in FIGs. 4 and 5, is bent at a predetennined angle to further increase the structural strength of the side walls • 15 and the opening parts 30 and enable the first egg crate container 10a to be nested in the second egg crate container 10b. That is to say, the lengthwise flange 44 which is a shadowed portion shown in FIGs. 4 and 5 includes an inner part 47 outwardly extended from the side walls 15 toward the opening part 30 and an outer part 49 outwardly extended from the inner part 47 by a predetennined . length toward the opposite side to the opening part 30, that is, toward the side- projections 70. The lengthwise flange 44 is tapered toward the bottom thereof. The inner part 47 and the outer part 49 of the each of the lengthwise flanges 44 are bent at a predetennined angle and become gradually smaller in width toward their lower ends, so as to reinforce the opening parts 30 and enable the first egg crate container 10a to be nested in the second egg crate container 10b. In addition, a round reinforcing band 29 is integrally fonned with the lengthwise flange 44 along the edge of the lengthwise flange, thereby preventing a user's hands or wrists from being injured. As described above, the egg crate container 10 of the present invention includes the plurality of projections, the horizontal and vertical flanges and the lengthwise flanges to supplement the structurally weakened side walls 15 due to ' the generation of the opening parts 30. Those reinforcing members, however, are not restricted to the aforesaid examples but can be modified in various manners by those skilled in the art without departing from the scope and spirit of the present invention. For instance, as illustrated in FIG. 6, the each of the central projections 50 may further include a central projection reinforcing rib 63 fonned at the outside of the upper end thereof or a central projection reinforcing panel 65 fonned at the inside thereof.
FIG. 7 and FIG. 8 are perspective views illustrating the cases where the first egg crate container 10a is nested in the second egg crate container 10b and the firs egg crate container is stacked on the second egg crate container 10b, respectively. Referring to FIGs. 7 and 8, the egg crate container 10 according to the present invention pennits the nesting of the first egg crate container 10a in the second egg crate container 10b when they are oriented in the same direction and the stacking of the first egg crate container 10a on the second egg crate container 10b when the first egg crate container 10a or the second egg crate container 10b is . rotated by 90 degrees. The egg crate container 10 of the present invention is constructed such that the first and third side walls 15 and the second and fourth side walls 17, the side-projections 70 and the central projections 50 are tapered toward the lower portions thereof. Since the side-projections 70 and the central projections 50 are formed such that they are outwardly projected from the side , walls 15 while being conespondingly indented when being seen from the inside of the egg crate container in the same shape as the outwardly projected shape, when side-projections 70a of the first egg crate container 10a are correspondingly rested on side-projections 70b of the second egg crate container 10b, the first egg crate container 10a is inserted into an egg crate receiving space 13b of the second egg crate container 10b, so that the first egg crate container 10a can be nested in the second egg crate container 10b.
In the meanwhile, as shown in FIG. 8, when the first egg crate container 10a needs to be stacked on the second egg crate container 10b and accordingly the first egg crate container 10a or the second egg crate container 10b is rotated by 90 degrees, the lower ends of the side-projections 70a and central projections 50a of the first egg crate container 10a are rested on a horizontal flange 23b of the second" egg crate container 10b, so that the first egg crate container 10a is not inserted into the egg crate receiving space 13b of the second egg crate container 10b. Thus, the stacking of the first egg crate container 10a on the second egg crate container 10b can be achieved without damaging eggs contained in the second egg crate container 10b.
To be specific, when the first egg crate container 10a is stacked on the second egg crate container 10b, protrusions 74 integrally fonned at the lower ends of the projections 50 and 70 in such a manner as to be protruded from the projections 50 and 70 are seated in protrusion catching grooves 26 fonned at the horizontal flange 23b of the second egg crate container 10b in such a manner as to • coreespond to the protrusions 74, thereby preventing the first egg crate container 10a from being moved. FIG. 9 is a detailed view illustrating a coupled relationship between the protrusions 74 and the protrusion catching grooves 26. Unexplained reference numeral 24 indicates a hole through which water or foreign substances are discharged.
Meantime, FIGs. 10 and 11 are a perspective view and a sectional view, respectively, illustrating another embodhnent of a container for containing egg crates according to the present invention. The first and third side walls 15 and the second and fourth side walls 17, the central projections 50 and the side- projections 70 include a perpendicular part 73 fonned at the lower portions thereof to a predetennined height in such a manner that the width of the upper portion of the peφendicular part 73 is the same as that of the lower portion of the perpendicular part. In the first embodiment of the egg crate container, the first and third side walls 15 and the second and fourth side walls 17, the central projections 50 and the side-projections 70 are tapered toward their lower portions to enable the first egg crate container 10a to be nested in the second egg crate container 10b. However, when they become smaller in width toward the lower - portions thereof or wider toward the upper portions thereof at the same angle, as shown in dotted lines of FIG. 11, the width D of the upper end of the egg crate container is proportionally increased to the height of the egg crate container, differently from the fixed width d of the lower end of the egg crate container.
Therefore, in the second embodiment of the egg crate container, for the . pui ose of making the width D of the upper end of the egg crate container as small as possible, the perpendicular part 73 is fonned at the lower portion of the egg crate container to the predetermined height in such a manner that the width of the upper portion of the peφendicular part 73 is the same as that of the lower portion of the peφendicular part. To be specific, the peφendicular part 73 is . fonned to the predetennined height conesponding to a length where the first egg crate container 10a is not contacted by the second egg crate container 10b in case of nesting because the first egg crate container 10a is not fully inserted into the second egg crate container 10b, thereby reducing the width W of the upper end of the egg crate container in a manner dependent on the length. The first and third side walls 15 and the second and fourth side walls 17, the central projections 50 and the side-projections 70 include a slant part 75 fonned at the upper portions, into which the first egg crate container 10a is inserted in case of nesting, from the peφendicular part 73 to a predetennined height in such a manner that the width of the slant part 75 becomes smaller toward the lower portion thereof, and the peφendicular part 73 fonned at the lower portions, into which the first egg crate container 10a is not inserted in case of nesting, thereby making the width W of the . upper end of the egg crate container as small as possible.
While the present invention has been described with reference to the particular illustrative embodiments, it is not to be restricted by the embodiments but only by the appended claims. It is to be appreciated that those skilled in the art can change or modify the embodiments without departing from the scope and spirit of the present invention.
