Abstract

A process for producing a surface-modified fluororubber, characterized by contacting a preform obtained from a radiation-crosslinkable thermoplastic fluoroelastomer with a treating liquid comprising a methacryl-containing unsaturated organosiloxane and an alcohol solvent and subsequently irradiating the preform with a radiation to thereby cause the elastomer present on the preform surface to undergo a crosslinking reaction and, simultaneously therewith, to treat the surface with the unsaturated organosiloxane. The production efficiency is hence heightened. Also provided is a surface-modified fluororubber excellent in toughness and stability or a sealing material for liquid crystal/semiconductor production apparatuses which is excellent in long-lasting stability to plasmas, nontackiness, and unsusceptibility to fouling.
