Definitions

  • the present invention is concerned with a device that substantially alleviates, or at least substantially reduces, the occurrence of snoring.
  • the device of the present invention may also be used for the substantial reduction of the damage caused by bruxism, jaw ache and/or stress relief.
  • Bruxism commonly known as tooth grinding, is the clenching together of the bottom and upper jaw accompanied by the grinding of the lower set of teeth with the upper set. Bruxism is a subconscious behavior so many people do not realize that they are doing it.
  • bruxism can occur during the waking hours, it most -frequently occurs while we sleep.
  • the biting force (the force at which the jaws clench together) can be up to six times greater than the pressure during waking hours. Consequently, significant damage is much more likely to occur at night.
  • the effects of bruxism can lead to pain and cause damage to gums and other oral structures.
  • Such damage includes sore facial muscles, headaches, and ear-aches, cosmetic damage (causing the teeth to be ground down becoming significantly shortened and creating cosmetic damage) , sensitive teeth (as the enamel of the tooth is worn away the underlying dentin layer of the tooth is exposed, thereby causing the tooth to become sensitive to cold, pressure, and other stimuli) , fractured teeth and fillings, temporo andibular joint damage. It is also considered that stress and anxiety play a major role in causing bruxism.
  • Such devices include mouth guards and/or mouth plates which may be custom made and that typically cover both the upper and the lower teeth, see for example US 6,170,485, US 5,823,193 and US 5,921,240.
  • some of the mouth guards may include electrodes such that electrical stimulation is activated so as to prevent the person wearing the device from snoring by attempting to change their sleeping habits, see for example US Re 36,120.
