Definitions
- the present invention is concerned with a device that substantially alleviates, or at least substantially reduces, the occurrence of snoring.
- the device of the present invention may also be used for the substantial reduction of the damage caused by bruxism, jaw ache and/or stress relief.
- Bruxism commonly known as tooth grinding, is the clenching together of the bottom and upper jaw accompanied by the grinding of the lower set of teeth with the upper set. Bruxism is a subconscious behavior so many people do not realize that they are doing it.
- bruxism can occur during the waking hours, it most -frequently occurs while we sleep.
- the biting force (the force at which the jaws clench together) can be up to six times greater than the pressure during waking hours. Consequently, significant damage is much more likely to occur at night.
- the effects of bruxism can lead to pain and cause damage to gums and other oral structures.
- Such damage includes sore facial muscles, headaches, and ear-aches, cosmetic damage (causing the teeth to be ground down becoming significantly shortened and creating cosmetic damage) , sensitive teeth (as the enamel of the tooth is worn away the underlying dentin layer of the tooth is exposed, thereby causing the tooth to become sensitive to cold, pressure, and other stimuli) , fractured teeth and fillings, temporo andibular joint damage. It is also considered that stress and anxiety play a major role in causing bruxism.
- Such devices include mouth guards and/or mouth plates which may be custom made and that typically cover both the upper and the lower teeth, see for example US 6,170,485, US 5,823,193 and US 5,921,240.
- some of the mouth guards may include electrodes such that electrical stimulation is activated so as to prevent the person wearing the device from snoring by attempting to change their sleeping habits, see for example US Re 36,120.
- a device for reducing snoring and/or reducing the damage caused by bruxism comprising a substantially U-shaped trough, the trough having an internal surface which is shaped and dimensioned to substantially correspond to the contours of anatomical carving (preferably of the users lower jaw) .
- the device is typically for removable placement in the mouth of a user.
- the device advantageously, opens the bite of a user and gives free airways, thereby removing stress of teeth and facial muscles, to release pressure on roots and nerve endings.
- the device also prevents tooth grinding.
- the internal surface is shaped and dimensioned to substantially correspond to the contours of anatomical carving of the lower jaw.
- the device is preferably shaped and dimensioned to substantially cover the anterior teeth through to the second premolar. Further preferably the device is shaped and dimensioned to substantially cover the anterior teeth through to the first molar. It is particularly preferred that the second (last) molar is not covered by the device in use; this feature is particularly advantageous as it reduces the risk of the user gagging and/or choking on the device in use.
- the device includes at least one wear indication member.
- the wear indication member advantageously provides a visual indication that the substantially U-shaped trough is being worn down. It is particularly preferred that the device includes two wear indication members .
- the wear indication member provides an indication to the user that a portion of the substantially U-shaped trough (typically the base portion of the trough) is wearing away through biting and grinding of the teeth on the lower jaw and teeth on the upper jaw, and therefore the device may no longer perform the function it was designed for and/or may be dangerous to the user, by for example choking.
- the wear indication member may be of the same material as the device (which is preferred) .
- the wear indication member is typically of a different colour to the remainder of the device.
- a device for reducing snoring and/or reducing damage caused by bruxism comprising a substantially U-shaped trough having an internal portion containing at least one wear indication member.
- the wear indication member is typically a portion of material having a different colour to the remainder of the device.
- the wear indication member may be transparent and the remainder of the device may be white (or vice versa) .
- the wear indication member is impregnated with a particular flavour which would be recognized by the user.
- the wear indication member is preferably an integral part of the substantially U-shaped trough. Therefore, according to a particularly preferred aspect of the present invention, the wear indication member comprises an internal portion of the U-shaped trough which comprises a material having a different colour to the remainder of the U-shaped trough.
- the U-shaped trough has a central portion (which is typically arranged to be substantially at the front of a users mouth when the device is in use) and two arm portions extending away from the central portion.
- the trough comprises a base portion and two side walls, the base portion being substantially thinner (for example about 3mm) at a central portion when compared to the arm portions (which may be, for example, about 12-18mm thick) , thereby forming a depression in the external surface of the trough.
- the depression provides an inlet (and outlet) for air to enter (and leave) the mouth of a user during use of the device.
- the bite that is the closure of the jaws
- the bite has been opened by about 15mm, therefore, the tongue and the soft pallet do not touch thereby substantially reducing the occurrence of snoring.
- The, or each, wear indication member preferably extends along the arms of the U-shaped trough for about 15mm.
- the arm portions preferably include the wear indication member.
- the wear indication member typically has an average thickness of about 3 to 7mm.
- the present invention therefore further extends to a method of manufacturing a device substantially as described hereinbefore.
- the method may comprise a dual injection moulding process, whereby the first material is injected into a die using a first injection tool, and a second material is injected into the die using a second injection tool, such that the second material forms an internal wear indication member.
- the wear indication member is substantially as described hereinbefore .
- the method may include providing a substantially U shaped trough (which may be formed by, for example, injection moulding), positioning a bar comprising the wear indication member on a base portion of the trough, and providing a coating layer over the wear indication member and the U-shaped trough.
- a substantially U shaped trough which may be formed by, for example, injection moulding
- the device is of a thermoplastics material, such as an ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer.
- a thermoplastics material such as an ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer.
- any thermoplastics material may be used according to the present invention.
- the device may be manufactured from a biodegradable material. It is also envisaged that the device is manufactured from a material that is impregnated with a flavour or is flavour enhanced. It may also be advantageous that the device includes a material having decongestant properties.
- the device is manufactured from a material having antibacterial properties.
- the device is manufactured from a material which is impregnated with a nicotene or nicotene substitute material.
- a nicotene or nicotene substitute material could assist in the cessation of smoking.
- the device may be of the type known as a "boil-in-the-bag mouth guard" wherein the trough has an internal surface which is substantially flat (this type is typically provided unshaped to the user who subsequently heats the unshaped device, in for example hot water, and shapes the device using their fingers, tongue and/or biting pressure) .
- the device may be of the type which is individually manufactured according to the end users morphology.
- the substantially U-shaped trough has an internal surface which is shaped and dimensioned to substantially correspond to the muscle contour of an average persons lower jaw.
- the device according to the present invention having preformed anatomical structures, substantially reduce the distortion of the device during the heating and shaping process of the user.
- the device is a "boil- in-the-bag” type device substantially as described hereinbefore.
- the device may have indicia thereon, such as a logo for example.
- the indicia is preferably applied by a pad printing process.
- the indicia may comprise one or more colours .
- Figure 1 represents a device according to the present invention.
- Figure 2 represents a device according to the present invention when in position over persons lower jaw.
- Figure 3 represents a cross-section along the line A-A shown in Figure 1.
- Figure 4 represents a plan view of a device according to the present invention in use.
- an anti snoring or bruxism damage reduction device generally indicated by the numeral 1.
- the device 1 comprises a substantially U-shaped trough 2.
- the substantially U-shaped trough 2 has two arms 3, 4 and a center base portion 5.
- Wear indication members 6 and 7 are positioned on the external portion of U-shaped trough 2 substantially along arms 3 and 4.
- the trough 2 has a base portion 9 and two side walls 10, 11.
- the base portion 9 has a thickness of about 15mm substantially along arms 3 and 4.
- the thickness of the base portion 9 in the center portion 5 is about 5mm.
- the center portion 5 has a depression therein 8 which permits air to flow freely into a users mouth (and therefore the throat and wind pipe) when in use.
- the substantially U-shaped trough 2 is of an ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer which is substantially transparent.
- the wear indication members 6, 7 are of an ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer which has been coloured white.
- the device is positioned on the lower jaw of the user (as shown in Figure 2 and 4) .
- the device advantageously reduces the occurrence of snoring and substantially reduces the damage caused to a users teeth by bruxism.
- the teeth in the upper jaw wear down the device in the region of the wear indication members.
- the user can visually determine when the device has worn down to an unusable and/or dangerous thickness (for example the white wear indication member becomes more visible) .
- the device may therefore be replaced by a new one.
