Abstract

A method and apparatus for producing a fine carbon fiber wherein a raw material gas containing an organic compound, a carrier gas containing hydrogen and/or an inert gas and a catalyst containing a transition metal are introduced into a reaction furnace (1), and a fine carbon fiber is formed by chemical pyrolysis reactions in the reaction furnace (1), characterized in that at least a part of the gas having been used for the formation of the fine carbon fiber is again introduced into the reaction furnace (1) by a recycle means (15) connected with the reaction furnace (1) and reused. The method allows the reduction of the amount of hydrogen or an inert gas used as a carrier gas, resulting in the reduction of the production cost of the fine carbon fiber.
