Definitions

  • the invention concerns a credit card having a safety system which prevents third persons from improperly using the card.
  • the card according to the invention comprises at least two enabling codes, each one randomly combined with determined periods of time, such as for example some hours, a day, or otherwise.
  • Conventional credit cards have a size substantially of 85 x 54 mm and are about 0.8 mm thick. They comprise a front surface on which the trade mark and name of the bank and/or company which issued it are printed, an anti-forgery hologram and, usually in relief, the name of the owner, the period of validity of the card and an activation code, also called the number of the credit card.
  • each credit card there is a magnetic strip, in which the data of the card is memorized, and a sector reserved for the card-holder's signature, both arranged parallel with the larger side of the card.
  • the magnetic strip is arranged near a larger side of the card, with its longitudinal axis about 10.5 mm from the edge, in order to allow the magnetic readers, also of standardized size throughout the world, to read the data of any credit card.
  • One purpose of the invention is to achieve a credit card which will guarantee greater security and serenity to the holder when said holder has to supply the activation code to make a purchase or a payment, and which will limit the possibility for a person other than the holder to use the credit card or the data on the card, unknown to the holder.
  • the credit card according to the invention comprises at least a second activation code associated with data support means, in which the data of the first and second activation code are stored.
  • the at least two activation codes are impressed in relief on the upper surface of the credit card, while the data support means are arranged on the lower surface of the credit card.
  • the data support means comprise two magnetic strips, each of which is associated with a respective activation code.
  • the two magnetic strips are arranged specular with respect to a median axis lengthwise along the credit card, so that they can both be read by standard readers, according to the side on which the credit card is inserted.
  • the first activation code and the first magnetic strip are arranged on the upper surface, while the second activation code and the second magnetic strip are arranged on the lower surface.
  • the data support means comprise at least an electronic micro-circuit, more commonly called “micro-chip” , which contains the data of the activation codes .
  • the at least two activation codes are associated with determined periods of time, advantageously days, indicated on a calendar available to the credit card holder, so that only said holder is able to determine which activation code is valid and can therefore be used in a particular period of time.
  • a credit card 10 has a standardized size of about 85 x 54 x 0.8 mm and comprises a front surface 10a on which are printed the symbol and name of the bank 11, the symbol and name of the issuing company 12 and an anti-forgery hologram design 13. On said front surface 10a are also impressed, in relief, the personal data 14 of the credit card holder 10 and, also in relief, the activation codes 15, in the case shown here 15a and 15b.
  • the surface 10b (Fig. 2) comprises, in this case, two magnetic strips 22a and 22b, to support the data of the credit card 10, and a sector 21 where the holder of the credit card 10 has to sign so that his signature can then be checked for authenticity if necessary.
  • the credit card 10 is also able to be read by a normal reading device for credit cards, not shown in the drawings, with a slit inside which the credit card 10 is inserted on the shorter side, with one of the two magnetic strips 22a or 22b facing towards a corresponding magnetic reader.
  • the magnetic strips 22a and 22b are arranged specular with respect to the median axis "X" at which the credit card 10 is inserted, so that the reading device can read the data contained in the magnetic strip 22a or that in the magnetic strip 22b.
  • Each one of the two magnetic strips 22a, 22b (Fig. 2) is arranged with the longitudinal axis parallel to the larger side of the credit card 10 and at a distance of about 10.5 mm from the edge.
  • a calendar available to the holder indicates, according to a random and never repetitive choice, the days of the year when one particular activation code 15a or 15b is to be used, in combination with the corresponding magnetic strip 22a or 22b and with the insertion, in the direction "A" or in direction "B" (Fig. 1) of the credit card 10 into the appropriate reading devices.
  • the holder of the credit card 10 will have to communicate to the salesman the date, possibly the place where said holder is, and the matching activation code.
  • the magnetic strips 22a, 22b can be replaced by at least a micro-chip able to contain the data concerning the activation codes.
  • the activation codes 15a and 15b can change from the morning to the afternoon, or with a higher frequency for an even greater security of the credit card 10.
