Definitions
- the invention relates to delivery of content over a data network in a controlled manner.
- a content delivery system comprises a source of a multimedia file and a receiver of that file both operatively in communication with a data network.
- a network operation center is also operatively in communication with the data network and logically disposed intermediate the source and the receiver.
- the receiver further comprises manipulation software to process an encoded multimedia file to allow decoding and viewing of the multimedia file according to a predetermined set of scheduling parameters relevant to the encoded multimedia file.
- FIG. 1 is a schematic of a system for providing multimedia files from a provider to a receiver
- FIG. 2 is a flowchart of a method of a preferred embodiment. r00091 DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF AN EXEMPLARY EMBODIMENT
- a schematic of a system for providing multimedia files from a provider to a receiver system 10 comprises data network 100; one or more sources 20 of multimedia files 12 to be delivered; one or more receivers 30; and one or more network operation centers 40.
- Source 20, receiver 30, and network operation center 40 are operatively interconnected via data network 100 which, in the preferred embodiment, is a public data network such as the Internet.
- the public data network may further include wired networks and wireless networks such as cable, DSL, and satellite as well as dial-up.
- Source 20 is a source of multimedia files 12 which, in an exemplary embodiment, are commercial multimedia files 12.
- source 20 may further comprise an online resource such as a file server connected to data network 100 or physical media such as optical or magnetic media or the like.
- source 20 may be a motion picture studio, a television studio, a motion picture distributor, or a television program distributor, or the like, or a combination thereof.
- multimedia files 12 may comprise movies, films, or other audiovisual works, or the like, or combinations thereof.
- Receiver 30 may be a personal computer such as illustrated at 30a,30b and further comprise multimedia file manipulation software such as multimedia file decoder 32 and multimedia file viewer 34, e.g. software executing at or in receiver 30.
- multimedia file manipulation software such as multimedia file decoder 32 and multimedia file viewer 34, e.g. software executing at or in receiver 30.
- receiver 30 may be set-top box 36 or specialized hardware including television sets 30c with built-in computing intelligence.
- multimedia file 12 may be provided from a provider at step 210, e.g. source 20, to receiver 30 via data network 100.
- multimedia file 12 is encoded at step 200 before transmission to receiver 30 at source 20.
- Encoded multimedia file 12 is provided to network operation center 40 such as over data network 100 or via a physical storage medium such as electronic, magnetic, or optical media, or the like, or combinations thereof. Once provided, encoded multimedia file 12 is stored at network operation center 40 at step 220.
- Source 20 also provides, at step 230, network operation center 40 with a predetermined set of scheduling parameters relevant to encoded multimedia file 12, such as delivery or scheduling parameters. Using these parameters, a predetermined set of transmission parameters for encoded multimedia file 12 may then determined at step 240, e.g. locations of receivers 30, a schedule timetable, or the like, or combinations thereof. [0017] Encoded multimedia file 12 may then be transmitted, at step 250, to one predetermined receiver 30 or to a plurality of receivers 30 over the data network 100 according to the predetermined set of scheduling and/or transmission parameters. All or a predetermined portion of these parameters may be provided to receiver 30, e.g. scheduling parameters.
- the transmission parameters may include file size information for encoded multimedia file 12, transmission time, network connection data, or the like, or a combination thereof.
- the transmission parameters may be used to aid determination of a transmission strategy, such as calculating a most cost effective transmission strategy. These strategies may include use of land based, air based, and/or satellite based delivery networks. Additionally, time critical delivery may be accommodated, e.g. multimedia file 12 may be delivered only after a certain time or date.
- multimedia file viewer 34 which is used for viewing encoded multimedia file 12, or multimedia file decoder 32 may be invoked at receiver 30, such as at step 260, according to the predetermined set of scheduling parameters received at receiver 30. Such invocation may be automatic, such as with enhanced television set 30c (Fig. 1).
- receiver 30 may decode encoded multimedia file 12 according to the predetermined set of scheduling parameters and then provide or otherwise invoke multimedia file viewer 34 for decoded multimedia file 12 in order to render the multimedia presentation according to the predetermined set of scheduling parameters.
- viewing may be at least partially controlled using scheduling parameters such as an allowed time for viewing, a restricted time for viewing, a regionalized custom parameter, or the like, or combinations thereof.
- regionalized refers to time zone, language, and geographic characteristics, or the like, or combinations thereof.
- multimedia file viewer 34 or multimedia file decoder 32 may use multimedia file 12 to provide a broadcast quality presentation at receiver 30, e.g. television programming or movie programming.
- multimedia files 12 may be deployed using data network 100, giving source 20 a distribution method similar to but less expensive than a traditional broadcast system or the like.
- an encoded multimedia file 12 may be resident at receiver 30 for a period of time prior to allowing access to its content, cost of communication and use in presentation of that multimedia file 12 may also be reduced.
- receiver 30 generates and maintains a logfile (not shown in the figures).
- the logfile may comprise system statistics relevant to retrieval and viewing of encoded multimedia file 12 by multimedia file viewer 34 and multimedia file decoder 32, e.g. usage patterns and frequency of each playout of multimedia file 12 as well as error messages that may occur during manipulation of multimedia file 12.
- receiver 30 may provide the logfile to network operation center 40, such as via data network 100 upon a request for the logfile sent by network operation center 40.
- Network operation center 40 may manipulate the logfile, e.g. by compiling it, and provide that portion of manipulated logfile data to source 20 that relates to encoded multimedia file 12 provided by that source 20.
- the manipulated logfile data may be also used by network operation center 40, such as for determining reliability of receiver 30 and/or for providing business feedback, e.g. usage of multimedia file 12, for business fulfillment processing.
