For example, in the case of a solid-state recording device, it is expected that the internal recording mechanism stores audio information in compressed form to conserve digital storage space. To accommodate this type of audio player device 80, the base unit 77 would not be designed to decompress the audio information before transferring it to the recording device 80 as described above. Instead the base unit 77 would transfer the information directly to the solid-state audio player in compressed form. This will result in reduced cost for the base unit 77 and increased operational efficiency concerning the download process between the base unit 77 and the audio recorder 80.

Abstract

Selon l'invention, des informations audio sont distribuées régulièrement à partir d'un centre de services (33) à un groupe important d'abonnés, en fonction des souhaits de chaque abonné. Les informations audio peuvent être des informations relatives à la pédagogie, aux loisirs ou à caractère informatif. Le centre de services stocke des informations relatives aux profils utilisateurs, des enregistrements audio comprimés destinés à une distribution future, transmet des informations audio comprimées à chaque unité de base (77) et s'interface avec les utilisateurs. L'unité de base fournit un statut de préparation au centre de services (33). Celui-ci envoie des informations audio numériques à l'unité de base (77). Cette dernière reçoit ensuite les informations audio comprimées sans surveillance, décode automatiquement les informations en un format conçu pour être admis dans un dispositif d'enregistrement (80) et enregistre les informations audio sur une cassette (82) ou un autre support d'enregistrement pouvant être transporté. L'unité de base (77) exécute l'enregistrement par exercice d'une commande sur un dispositif d'enregistrement relié (80). Les communications entre le centre de services et chaque unité de base peuvent mettre en oeuvre un réseau de données fonctionnant au sommet du réseau téléphonique public commuté, au moyen de modems xDSL (16), ou d'un réseau câblé, au moyen de modems câblés. Le système maximise une utilisation efficace des ressources du système et réduit les coûts globaux du système.
