Abstract

A circuit for controlling optical output power of a component in a communication system comprising a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA), an electronic signal detection and feedback control block, an electrical coupler and a current source block. An SOA electrode voltage (or current) acquires a high frequency spectral content representative of the data modulation of an optical input signal. This modulated electrode signal is monitored, and the electrical power of the modulated electrode signal, within a predetermined spectral range, is shown to be proportional to the optical output power of the SOA. The constant of proportionality is independent of average electrical pump current, optical input power and the state of polarisation of the optical input signal. The electronic signal detection and feedback control block and the current source block function to compensate for low optical input power and changes in the state of polarisation of the optical input signal.
