Definitions
- This invention relates to a non PVC permanent connector suitable for, although not limited to, connecting flexible electrical cables, cords, flexes and the like to each other for extending or joining the same for
- an electrical flex or cord is a flexible insulated cable often used for carrying electrical current from an electrical power source to an electrical apparatus.
- a cable comprises of two, three or four electrical conductors that are each encased in a protective and non-conducting sheath of plastic, or the like, insulating material.
- the insulating sheath material is partially removed so as to expose the conductors, after which the conductors of one cable are connected to corresponding conductors of the other cable. It will be appreciated that respective conductor connec tions should again be insulated to prevent, for example, electrical short circuit.
- Different cable connectors for connecting and lengthening electrical cables or cords are available on the market. These include, for example, male and female connectors, wherein the male connector is crimp-fitted to one cable and the female connector crimp-fitted to another cable. These types of connectors also may be in the form of spigot and socket type arrangements.
- Another known cable connector provides a substantially tubular body having two opposite open ends that are dimensioned for receiving end portions of two conductors to be connected. Once the end portions of the respective conductors have been positioned in the tubular body, the latter is crimp-fitted to the conductors so as to grip the respective end portions of the two conductors in electrical contact.
- the conductors are maintained in the tubular body by means of screws extending through a wall of the tubular body and engaging the respective conductors.
- strip connectors that are encased in an insulating material which is used to connect the exposed conductors with screws. These are available in strips of 10 or 12 which can be cut as required, but usually gets mounted on a body in a fixed position to ease cable connections.
- known cable connectors generally all suffer from one or more disadvantages. Some of the prior art connectors are relatively complicated in their design and hence are relatively expensive. Other connectors provide relatively little efficiency in keeping the conductors in electrical contact, or are relatively dangerous to use and difficult to apply as special tools are required to enable the connection. Yet a further disadvantage of some known cable connectors is that they are sometimes unsafe to use, especially in domestic environments. Object of the invention
- This insulating body should preferable, but not limited to, be used for a permanent connection. This invention is easy to apply and ready within minutes.
- a permanent connector for connecting electrical cabling.
- the connector comprising of; a central insulating channel, suitable for receiving electrical conductors; a brass, or an electrical conducting material insert, urging the end portions of the conductors into electrical contact with each other; two end caps; the housing or outer casing and a suitable filler material, such as; resin, specifically F 1 , silicone or the like.
- electrical cabling will be interpreted to include all types of electrical cords, cables, leads, flexes and the like
- electrical conductor refers to a single conductor encased in a sheath of insulating material, the arrangement being such that two or more conductors constitute an electrical cable.
- the housing may be dimensioned such that the conductor end portions enter the caps and the central insulating channel housed in the outer casing from opposite ends.
- the housing may include at least one conductor passage extending through the housing, the arrange ment being such that the central insulating channel is located in the conductor passage so as to accommodate the end portions of the conductors.
- a non PVC connector defining a junction zone or conductor passage, suitable for receiving end portions of electrical conductors;
- the central insulating channel consisting of two; three or four "U" shaped wire or conductor insulating channels; each for a single electrical connection.
- the "U" shaped insulating channel will separate and insulate, in use, the two; three or four electrical conductors from each other.
- Galvanised brass or any electrical conducting material insert with a screw or screws and pressure plate, or connector, at each end, which is inserted in the insulating channel.
- the screws, or connector would allow for the exposed electrical conductor ends to be secured. This is achieved when the insulating sheath material, partially removed from the electrical cabling, exposes the electrical conductors, after which the electrical conductors of one electrical cabling are connected to corresponding electrical conductor of the other electrical cabling. This method enables the current to flow between the electrical conductors by means of the brass inserts and screws, or connector.
- Two end portions would act as caps, allowing the ends of the electrical cabling to pass through and be connected within the central insulating channel, housed in the outer casing.
- the caps and outer casing forming the conductor passage. Flexibility and design of the caps prevent filling material, preferably F I 6, from escaping when entrapped.
- the outer casing, housing the central insulating channel, between end caps, compliments the "U" shaped insulating channels by offering total insulation.
- the outer casing and caps, forming the conductor passage may at least partially be filled with a suitable filler material, such as resin, specifically F I 6 Fastcast Polyurethane P.esin, which is user friendly, fire retardant and sets within minutes, ssl ⁇ cone or the like, for maintaining the electrical conductors in position; for effecting water insulation of the connector and to control tension failure.
- a suitable filler material such as resin, specifically F I 6 Fastcast Polyurethane P.esin, which is user friendly, fire retardant and sets within minutes, ssl ⁇ cone or the like, for maintaining the electrical conductors in position; for effecting water insulation of the connector and to control tension failure.
- Figure I is an exploded perspective view of the outer appearance of the end caps and outer casing. This demonstrates the shape;
- Figure 2 is a longitudinal cross-section view of a three conductor passage with both end caps secured. It should be appreciated that the view of the central insulating channel would differ for the two, as well as the four conductor passages.
- Figure 3 is a transverse cross- sectional view of the "U" shaped central insulating channel for three conductors, illustrated within the outer casing;
- Figure 4 is a transverse cross-sectional view of an end cap with cable insert area illustrated;
