Definitions
- This invention relates to a machine to weed or dig a railroad side, comprising a railbound car and a scraper conveyer mounted on the car to be swingable both horizontally and vertically for scraping up material from the railroad side.
- the invention relates also to a method of mechanichally weeding a railroad bedside.
- Old railroad beds will often have too much bed material on their sides so that it will be a deepeningunder the track, which obstructs the outflow of water. Also, old material does usually not drain so well. It is nowadays desirable to increase the axle load from 22 tonnes to 30 tonnes and that can usually be done provided the railroad bed is perfect. Old railroad beds can also take a higher axle load if their portions outside of the track, the bedsides, are re-graded (including removal of surplus materal). Sometimes, one must also substitute a part of the materal, possibly screen the old material and return a part of it.
- the machine according to the invention is characterised by a support skid on the conveyer near the front end of the conveyer and adjustable in heigth and swingable sideways.
- the method according to the invention is characterised in that a railbound car is used and one drives the car along the rail simultaneously with scraping in the weed in a scraper conveyer mounted on the car.
- FIG. 1 is a side view of a machine in accordance with the invention.
- FIG. 1 is an enlarged view of a part of the machine shown in figure 1.
- Figure 3 is a section taken along line 3-3 in figure 2.
- Figure 4 corresponds to figure 3 but shows some elements in other relative positions.
- the machine shown in figure 1 comprises a railbound car 11 on two boggies. It has a column 12 with an upper portion 13 that is turnable about the axis of the column.
- the upper portion 13 of the column has a transverse axle 14 that carries tiltably a scraper conveyer 15.
- the scraper conveyer 15 is thus swingable both horizontally and vertically so that it reaches several meters out on the sidebed and this swinging is carried out by means of non-illustrated hydraulic cylinders.
- the scraper conveyer unloads its goods in a chute 16 that leads to a belt conveyer 18 on an intermediate car 19, a loading car, and the conveyer 18 loads a non-illustrated bulk goods car. It is possible to have a set of cars provided with conveyers so that the material digged up fills the rearmost car first and then one car at the time forwards.
- the scraper conveyer 15 has, as is conventional, two wheels 20,21 on which an endless belt or endless chains run and the belt/chains have scrapers 24, only one of which is indicated.
- the scrapers 24 scrape the material along the bottom of the conveyer.
- the conveyer 15 has a steel sheet cover 26 that supports a bow 27 and spurs 28 which function as bumpers. Also, the spurs loosen up the ground.
- a skid 30 supports the conveyer on the ground.
- Figure 2 shows enlarged the front portion of the the scraper conveyer 15 with the skid 30 and figure 3 shows the position of the skid when it is directed along the conveyer.
- the skid 30 has its one corner mounted to the scraper conveyer in a joint 33 so that its rear end can be adjusted in heigth by means of a hydraulic cylinder 31 and sideways by means of a hydraulic cylinder 32.
- the conveyer 15 is shown swung out into an operating position in which it is directed outwards/downwards from its mounting.
- the arrow 34 shows the direction of working of the machine along the track and the skid 30 is swung relative to the scraper conveyer so that it is parallel with the direction of movement of the machine.
- the machine can have ascraper conveyer on each side so that both bedsides can be worked simultanously. There can be one operator for each scraper conveyer
- the lifting cylinder of the skid and the lifting cylinder of the scraper conveyer can be controlled in unison.
- the velocity of the machine on the track should be considerably less than the velocity of the scrapers so that the scrapers will pull up shrub and bushwood by their roots and drag them in.
- the scraper conveyer should not be so wide that it becomes cumbersome in the narrow space between track and poles. It can be 0.5 - 1 meter wide and one will then have to drive several times in order to cover the entire width of the bedside.
- Deeper digging is carried out in the same way.
- the depth of digging is adjusted by means of the hydraulic cylinder 31 of the skid.
