Definitions

  • the present invention relates generally to a separable cigarette package for packaging cigarettes therein, and more particularly, to a cigarette package, which is made up of two packs and can be widely used as thank-you gifts or sales promoting articles in promotional events, as well as for the purpose of advertising and publicity.
  • filter-type cigarettes are packaged prior to sale in a package made of paper.
  • One package usually contains twenty cigarettes .
  • a so-called "hard pack” as a kind of cigarette package, that is a cigarette pack with a hinged cover, which is designed not to be easily crushed.
  • Such a pack usually has a rectangular parallelepiped shape, and is made of a thick sheet and provided with a wrap made of a transparent polypropylene film.
  • the cigarette pack with the hinged cover is made up of two sheets.
  • one sheet forms a body and the cover of the cigarette pack, while the other sheet is upwardly projected from a front surface and both side surfaces of the body so as to firmly hold the body and the cover when the pack is closed.
  • cigarettes may be contained in a so-called "soft pack".
  • the soft pack is made of paper which is thinner than that used in the cigarette pack with the hinged cover and designed to be opened by tearing a part of top surface of a packing paper, so it is efficient in terms of its manufacturing cost. Description

SEPARABLE CIGARETTE PACKAGE
Technical Field
The present invention relates generally to a separable cigarette package for packaging cigarettes therein, and more particularly, to a cigarette package, which is made up of two packs and can be widely used as thank-you gifts or sales promoting articles in promotional events, as well as for the purpose of advertising and publicity.
Background Art
Generally, filter-type cigarettes are packaged prior to sale in a package made of paper. One package usually contains twenty cigarettes .
As shown in Fig. 1, there is a so-called "hard pack" as a kind of cigarette package, that is a cigarette pack with a hinged cover, which is designed not to be easily crushed. Such a pack usually has a rectangular parallelepiped shape, and is made of a thick sheet and provided with a wrap made of a transparent polypropylene film.
The cigarette pack with the hinged cover is made up of two sheets. In this case, one sheet forms a body and the cover of the cigarette pack, while the other sheet is upwardly projected from a front surface and both side surfaces of the body so as to firmly hold the body and the cover when the pack is closed.
Further, cigarettes may be contained in a so-called "soft pack". The soft pack is made of paper which is thinner than that used in the cigarette pack with the hinged cover and designed to be opened by tearing a part of top surface of a packing paper, so it is efficient in terms of its manufacturing cost. But, the soft pack has a problem that its contents are easily crushed. The soft pack is wrapped with polypropylene film in the same manner as the hard pack.
When a customer wants to buy cigarettes at a place, such as a coffee shop, an internet plaza, a karaoke, and a restaurant, a host sells the customer cigarettes which are beforehand bought from a neighboring retail store or directly purchased from an authorized dealer.
Typically, in order to use the cigarette package for the purpose of advertisement or sales promotion, there has been proposed a method of simply putting an advertising insert between the outer surface of the cigarette package and polypropylene film. In addition, as Korean U.M. Laid- Open publication No. 20-1985-000785 discloses, there has been proposed a method of putting the advertising insert between the interior packing paper and the exterior packing paper in a conventional soft pack. Further, there has been used a method of printing an advertisement on a surface of the cigarette package according to an advertisement ordering system conducted by KOREA TOBACCO AND GINSENG CORPORATION.
In such conventional methods, the printed advertisement and additionally inserted advertisement are exposed to the outside, so the cigarette package is messy in its appearance, thus a smoker having a negative impression as well as feeling apprehensive about the quality of the cigarette. Further, in the case of putting the advertisement between the interior packing paper and the exterior packing paper, the smoker may not find the advertisement, even when he smokes all cigarettes contained in the package and throws the package into a trash basket.
Once the cigarette package is opened, a characteristic smell of the cigarette is released to the outside. Therefore, if the smoker keeps the cigarette package and smokes the cigarettes contained in the package over a lengthy period of time, then the taste of the cigarettes goes bad, thus reducing the satisfaction of smoking.
Summary of the Invention
Accordingly, the present invention has been made keeping in mind the above problems occurring in the prior art, and an object of the present invention is to provide a cigarette package, which is used for advertisement or sales promotion and has a unique structure to arouse the curiosity of a consumer instead of making a negative impression, and which pack a small number of cigarettes, thus allowing the smoker to enjoy a cigarette which is hardly deteriorated in its taste, in comparison with the cigarette contained in the conventional cigarette package.
In order to accomplish the above object, the present invention provides a separable cigarette package, comprising two pairs of bodies and covers made by a sheet comprising first and second package units, said first and second package units being separable from each other and said body of each pair being provided with an interior packing paper for packaging cigarettes inside said body; two cover holding parts, each of said parts attached to an upper portion of a front surface of the body of each pair to maintaining a closed state of the cover when the body is closed by the cover, said each pair and the cover holding part attached thereto forming a pack; a packing film wrapping two packs when said two packs are folded together; a tear tape provided at the packing film for opening the packing film; and an insert for advertisement or sales promotion, said insert put into a space formed between said two packs when said two packs are folded.

Detailed Description of the Invention
The cigarette package of this invention improves a conventional pack with a hinged cover which has a rectangular parallelepiped shape and comprises a body and a cover. The body includes a front surface, a rear surface, a bottom surface, and two side surfaces. The cover includes a front surface, a top surface, two side surfaces, and a rear surface hinged to the rear surface of the body. In this case, the cigarette package of this invention is made up of two packs each having a structure as described above. Further, the cigarette package of this invention is also provided with a junction at a position where an edge of the rear surface of one pack meets an edge of the rear surface of the other pack.
The junction serves as a hinge such that two packs are opened and closed in the manner of opening and closing a book. When the two packs are folded about the junction as a hinge axis, their rear surfaces, which come into contact with each other, are used as printed advertising surfaces. An insert, such as an advertising paper, a lottery ticket, is put into a space formed between two rear surfaces of the two packs when they are folded. An adhesive tape is provided at a side edge of the rear surface of each of the two packs opposite to the junction, and used for removably attaching the two packs to each other while reinforcing the attachment of the two packs when they are folded about the junction.
The junction is formed as a perforated line, so is easily cut when a twist moment or a shearing force is applied to the junction. Therefore, the two packs are easily separable from each other, thus allowing a user to carry one pack. The method of taking out cigarette from the cigarette package of this invention is as follows. That is, the cigarette may be taken out from the cigarette package by opening the cover about the hinge in the same manner as the conventional pack with the hinged cover. Alternatively, the cigarette may be taken out from the cigarette package in the same manner as the conventional soft pack. That is, the cigarette package may be provided on a side of the top surface of the cover with a removable section. This removable section is formed as a perforated line, thus being easily removed from the cigarette package
Reference should now be made to the drawings, in which the same reference numerals are used throughout the different drawings to designate the same or similar components .

Figs. 7 to 9 are views showing the separable cigarette package according to the second, third, and fourth embodiments of this invention, respectively.
The cigarette package of this invention is designed to have advantages of a soft pack based on a conventional pack with a hinged cover. The cigarette package includes a first sheet 5 formed in such a way as to be symmetrical with respect to a junction 10, such that the cigarette package can be divided into two packs 7 and 8 along the junction 10. The cigarette package has a second sheet 6 attached to the inside of a body 4 in such a way as to be upwardly projected from the front surface 11 and both side surfaces 40 and 42 of the body 4. In this case, the second sheet 6 serves to hold a cover 2 and the body 4 when the cigarette package is closed. Further, an insert 63, such as an advertising paper, is inserted into a space formed between the two packs 7 and 8 when they are folded. The cigarette package also has adhesive tapes 60 and 61, a polypropylene film 72, and a tear tape 70. In this case, the adhesive tapes 60 and 61 function to attach the packs 7 and 8 to each other when they are folded along the junction 10. The polypropylene film 72 wraps the exterior of the cigarette package in the same manner as that of the conventional cigarette package. The tear tape 70 is provided at the film 72 for easily removing the polypropylene film 72 from the cigarette package when necessary.
The separable cigarette package of this invention is manufactured with a single sheet 5 in principle, except for the second sheet 6 attached to the inside of each of the packs 7 and 8. This cigarette package will be described in detail in the following with reference to Fig. 4. The sheet 5 forming the cigarette package basically has a similar construction to that of a conventional pack with a hinged cover. According to this invention, the sheet 5 forms two package units. In this case, the construction of the first package unit made of sheet 5 is as follows. That is, the first package unit made of the sheet 5 has a first front surface 11, two first side surfaces 40 and 42 provided at both side edges of the first front surface 11, a bottom surface 22 provided at an edge of the first front surface 11, a first rear surface 16 provided at an edge of the bottom surfaces 22. The first package unit of the sheet 5 also has two second side surfaces 12 and 14 provided at both side edges of the first rear surface 16, two lower flaps 18 and 20 respectively positioned at both side edges of the bottom surface 22 in such a way to be opposite to each other, a second rear surface 24 provided at an edge of the first rear surface 16, and two third side surfaces 26 and 28 provided at both side edges of the second rear surface 24. Further, the first package unit of the sheet 5 has a top surface 33 which is provided at an edge of the second rear surface 24 and divided into two sections 32 and 34, one upper flap 30 provided at an edge of the third side surface 26 formed at a side edge of the second rear surface 24 while positioned at a side edge of the top surface 33, a second front surface 46 provided at an edge of the top surface 33, two fourth side surfaces 48 and 50 provided at both side edges of the second front surface 46, and a cover reinforcing surface 52 provided at an edge of the second front surface 46. Meanwhile, the second package unit of the sheet 5 has a symmetrical structure with respect to the first package unit. In each of the first and second package units, one 40 of two first side surfaces 40 and 42 provided at both side edges of the first front surface 11, that is, the side surface 40 placed at a side having no upper flap 31 (See, Figs. 1 and 2), is provided at its side edge with a perforated line to form the junction 10, such that the first and second package units are connected to each other along the junction 10.
According to this invention, the first and second package units made of the sheet 5 are provided with only one upper flap 30. The upper flap 30 is provided at the upper edge of one 26 of the third side surfaces 26 and 28, that is, the upper edge of the side surface 26 formed at a position opposite to that provided with the junction 10. The top surface 33 of each of the first and second package units is divided into first and second sections 34 and 32. In this case, the second sections 32 of the first and second package units are proximal with respect to each other, whereas the first sections 34 of the first and second package units are distal with respect to each other. The second section 32 of the top surface 33 is defined by dotted lines 36, 37 and 38 which are formed on the second front surface 46, the top surface 33 and the second rear surface 24, respectively. A side line 54 of the second section 32 is slightly projected in a direction opposite to the upper flap 30. When the cigarette package is assembled using the sheet 5, the first and second package units made of the sheet 5 form the two packs. The junction 10 formed as the perforated line, serves as a hinge, such that the packs 7 and 8 are folded and unfolded along the junction 10. In addition, the junction 10 serves as a cutting line, such that the packs 7 and 8 are separable from each other as necessary. According to this invention, one 31 of the upper flaps 30 and 31 is omitted, differently from the conventional cigarette package provided with the two upper flaps 30 and 31. The top surface 33 of the cover is divided into the first and second sections 34 and 32. The second section 32 is defined by the dotted lines 36, 37 and 38 which are formed on the second front surface 46, the top surface 33 and the second rear surface 24, respectively. The first section 34 is the part excluding the second section 32 from the top surface 33. The second section 32 defined as described above, is removable from the cigarette package when smoking. Since a side line 54 of the second section 32 is slightly projected in a direction opposite to the upper flap 30, the second section 32 is easily removed from the cigarette package when necessary.
Of the two first side surfaces 40 and 42, one side surface 40 to be connected to the junction 10 is wider than the other side surface 42, thus preventing the packs 7 and 8 from being unexpectedly unfolded, in the state of folding the packs 7 and 8.
The separable cigarette package made of one sheet 5 and packed in this way, has a shape as shown in Fig. 3. That is, the packs 7 and 8 are folded along the junction 10 which is formed as the perforated line on the sheet 5. Thereafter, the adhesive tapes 60 and 61, respectively, provided at a position of each of the rear surfaces 16 maintain the attaching state of the packs 7 and 8. Finally, the cigarette package is wrapped with polypropylene film 72, in the same manner as the conventional cigarette package. The separable cigarette package of this invention is unfolded along the junction 10 which is formed as the perforated line, only when the polypropylene film 72 is completely removed from the cigarette package using the conventional tear tape 70. As shown in Fig. 4, advertisements 64 and 65 put on the rear surfaces 16 of the packs 7 and 8 are exposed by unfolding the packs 7 and 8. By unfolding the packs 7 and 8, the smoker can see the insert 63, such as an advertising paper, a lottery ticket, which is inserted into a gap 17 formed between the packs 7 and 8 when they are folded. The packs 7 and 8 are easily separable from each other by applying a twist force or a shearing stress to the junction 10. When the smoker opens the cover 2 provided at each of the packs 7 and 8, the cigarettes can be taken out from the cigarette package.
The method of taking out the cigarettes from the cigarette package in such a way allows an advertising impact to be maximized. This method induces the smoker to see the advertising papers 64 and 65 or the insert 63, which are hidden in the package, at least one time while smoking two packs of cigarettes. That is, it is impossible to unfold the packs 7 and 8 along the junction 10, when only the upper part of the polypropylene film 72 is removed from the cigarette package using the tear tape 70. Further, it is impossible to open the cover 2 along a hinge axis 80 for taking out the cigarettes from the cigarette package, when the packs 7 and 8 are not unfolded.
In the case where a smoker does not desire to separate the cigarette package into the packs 7 and 8, and besides, takes an interest in only smoking without being interested in the advertising papers 64 and 65 or the insert 63, another method is required to open the cigarette package, because the cigarette package is designed such that the cover 2 can not be opened in the state of folding the packs 7 and 8. As shown in Fig. 6, the cigarette package is opened by removing the second section 32 formed at a position of the top surface 33 of the cover 2 as well as a part of an interior packing paper 66 to be exposed to the outside. Thus, it is possible to take out the cigarette from the cigarette package, in the manner of opening the cover and taking out the cigarette from the cigarette package used in the conventional soft pack. In order to make the interior packing paper 66 be exposed to the outside as soon as the second section 32 is removed, one 31 of the upper flaps 30 and 31 provided on the sheet of the conventional pack with the hinged cover, that is, the flap 31 provided at a side edge of the second section 32 is omitted.
In this case, since the cigarettes are divided into a small amount and individually packed in the packs 7 and 8 of the cigarette package, the packs 7 and 8 are sequentially opened. Thus, the cigarettes are hardly changed in their quality and maintain superior quality, thus allowing fastidious smokers to be satisfied with the cigarettes contained in the cigarette package.
Further, in the case where a smoker has an interest in the advertising papers 64 and 65 and curiosity to know the characteristic design of the cigarette package, but does not desire to separate the cigarette package into the packs 7 and 8 and to take out the cigarette from the cigarette package by removing the second section 32 of the top surface 33, the polypropylene film 72 is completely removed and then the packs 7 and 8 are unfolded along the junction 10 of the separable cigarette package. Next, the cover 2 of each of the packs 7 and 8 is opened to take out the cigarettes from the cigarette package. Thereafter, the packs 7 and 8 are folded again, and attached to each other by the adhesive tapes 60 and 61, thus allowing the smoker to tidily keep and carry the cigarette package. In this case, the adhesive tapes 60 and 61 can be repeatedly used.
In the separable cigarette package constructed in this way, the rear surface 16 of the pack 7 is brought into contact with the rear surface 16 of the pack 8 without exposing the insert to the outside in the final packing state. On the rear surfaces 16 are printed advertisements. The gap 17 formed between the rear surfaces 16 of the packs 7 and 8 is used as a space for inserting the insert 63, such as an advertising paper, a sales promotion lottery, thus ensuring a sufficient advertising space while keeping the appearance of the cigarette package clean, and thus arousing the curiosity of a smoker about a unique design as well as contents of the cigarette package instead of making a negative impression, therefore maximizing an advertising impact . According to this invention, it is possible to separately carry the packs of the cigarette package. So, a smoker who smokes little can carry only one pack of the cigarette package, thus the package being convenient to carry. On the other hand, a smoker who smokes heavily can sequentially open the packs 7 and 8, so the packs 7 and 8 become opened for a relatively short period of time and the time when the packs 7 and 8 are exposed to the atmospheric air becomes short. Thus, the cigarette is hardly changed in its quality due to the release of its characteristic smell to the atmospheric air, thus increasing a sense of satisfaction of the smoker.
Since the separable cigarette package of this invention is divided into the two packs, the package can simultaneously contain two brands of cigarettes. The smoker usually tends to smoke one brand of cigarette, but sometimes tries smoking other brands of cigarette, or desires to smoke a menthol cigarette, a mild cigarette or a strong cigarette according to his mood. The separable cigarette package of this invention can simultaneously contain various brands of cigarettes, thus allowing consumers with various tastes to feel the sense of satisfaction. In Korea, the cigarettes are produced by only KOREA TOBACCO AND GINSENG CORPORATION. But, in other countries, the cigarettes are produced and distributed by private enterprises, so the cigarette package of this invention can be used when packing together cigarettes produced by several companies.
As such, the separable cigarette package of this invention can be divided into the two packs along the junction serving as a cutting line. The packs are folded and unfolded along the junction serving as a hinge. When the packs are folded, the gap formed between the rear surfaces of the units is not exposed to the outside while ensuring a sufficient space where the advertisement is printed or the insert is inserted, thus having an effective advertising impact as well as maintaining a tidy appearance. When the cigarette package sold at stores, for example, restaurants, karaoke, and others, the advertisement additionally put on the package in a unique design arouse the curiosity of a smoker, thus increasing an advertising impact. In addition, contents of the package cannot be identified before opening the polypropylene film, thus providing a dramatic effect, therefore being variously used as a commodity, thank-you gifts and sales promotion articles in promotional events .
Further, the separable cigarette package of this invention is used as a common commodity at retail stores, so a smoker who smokes little carries only one pack of the cigarette package, thus the pack being convenient to carry. The cigarette package of this invention is designed in such a way as to be sequentially opened, thus increasing the sense of satisfaction of the smoker who is sensitive to the taste of the cigarette.
Fig. 7 schematically shows the separable cigarette package in accordance with the second embodiment of this invention, in which two packs of the package are different in thickness. By constructing the cigarette package in this way, it is possible that the packs of the cigarette package contain different numbers of cigarettes.
Fig. 8 shows the separable cigarette package according to the third embodiment of this invention. The cigarette package of the third embodiment is different from that the above embodiments of this invention in that the rear surface of the first package unit is not in contact with that of the second package unit, but the side surface of the first package unit comes into contact with that of the second package unit. The third embodiment is suitable to achieve the compact cigarette package containing a small number of cigarettes. Even when the numbers of cigarettes to be contained in the package are regulated by law, the third embodiment allows a smoker to select a cigarette package containing a desired number of cigarettes . Fig. 9 shows the separable cigarette package according to the fourth embodiment of this invention. The cigarette package of the fourth embodiment is designed to have two packs within the size of the conventional cigarette package. In this case, the rear surface of the first package unit is in contact with that of the second package unit, in the same manner as that of the above embodiments of this invention. As shown in Figs. 7 to 9, this invention provides cigarette packages having a variety of shapes, by changing a size or contact surfaces according to the demand of smokers, sellers or producers without changing the prototype of the first sheet.
Industrial Applicability
As described above, the present invention provides a separable cigarette package, which has the following advantages .
First, the conventional cigarette package contains only one brand of cigarette, but the cigarette package of this invention is made up of two packs, thus selling two brands of cigarette together, for example, a normal cigarette and a menthol cigarette, a high tar cigarette and a low tar cigarette.
The government authority concerned with cigarettes may demand that a cigarette manufacturing company indicates a warning sentence along with advertisement. According to this invention, since an insert is put at a gap between the packs when they are folded, the area available for advertisement is relatively large, and besides, it is possible to apply the cigarette package of this invention for adult advertisement as well as liquor advertisement. Although the law provides that no gifts may be supplied to a consumer, a seller can give the consumer a free coupon, such as a medical examination coupon, by inserting the free coupon into the gap between the packs, thus being helpful to maintain the smoker's health. Thus, the cigarette manufacturing company can have an advantage in a lawsuit over smoking.
Since the cigarette package of this invention is capable of containing various brands of cigarette, a smoker who has smoked only one brand of cigarette for a lengthy period of time may buy another brand of cigarette along with his favorite brand of cigarette without being reluctant to buy another brand of cigarette. A new brand of cigarette may be disagreeable to the smoker, but the cigarette package of this invention allows the smoker to buy a new brand of cigarette without a burden. When a cigarette company finds a new market or a new brand of cigarette is put on the market, a company owning the separable cigarette package of this invention can sell the cigarette which is produced by this company as well as the existing cigarette of the new market. In addition, the company can sell a new brand of cigarette along with an existing brand of cigarette, thus easily accessing the market .
The cigarette package according to this invention prevents illegal cigarettes from being manufactured, because new production facilities required to manufacture such a cigarette package are a burden on manufacturers who intend to produce the illegal cigarettes .
Since the cigarette package of this invention has a unique design and advantages as described above, the cigarette package arouses the curiosity of consumers, strongly impresses consumers sensitive to the taste of cigarette, and is discriminated from other existing cigarette packages .
The cigarette package of this invention can be made up of small packs which are separable from each other. Thus, a consumer can carry the small pack. Also, the cigarette package can be divided into two to be supplied to two smokers. Further, an insert of the cigarette package, such as a lottery ticket, a free medical examination coupon, gives a great delight to the consumer. In addition, the present invention provides the cigarette package, which is made up of two packs which are sequentially opened, thus allowing the smoker to enjoy cigarettes of consistent taste.
Further, the cigarette package of this invention allows a consumer to select the desired number of cigarettes.
Although the preferred embodiments of the present invention have been disclosed for illustrative purposes, those skilled in the art will appreciate that various modifications, additions and substitutions are possible, without departing from the scope and spirit of the invention as disclosed in the accompanying claims .
