Definitions
- the present invention generally relates to golf accessories, and more particularly relates to a rolling caddy easily transportable between a residence, automobile, golf course or airport.
- a golf bag is a necessity for any golfer.
- a typical golf bag includes an elongated body which accommodates the length of golf clubs and an open end so that heads of the golf clubs extend therefrom for easy extraction from the bag.
- Bags with built in extendable wheels are typically of heavy, complex construction and difficult to operate.
- the wheels must be extended for transporting the bag and their size prevents compact nesting of a plurality of bags on a motorized golf cart which is shared by a plurality of golfers.
- a golf bag or caddy which can used can be used as a regular golf bag for easy transporting by hand or over the shoulder, as it may be generally used, stacked on a motorized golf cart while at the same time enabling wheeling about on a hard surface for transport between residences, cars, golf courses, and airports.
- a rolling caddy in accordance with the present invention generally includes a golf club bag having a elongate body, a bottom and an open top.
- a base is provided and surrounds the bag bottom with a pair of wheels disposed on the base and within the perimeter of the base. Because the wheels are always extended, there is no handling required by the golfer in extending and retracting wheels, such as the case with prior art devices.
- the golf bag with base is of no larger dimension than conventional modern golf bags, and as a result, does not inhibit grouping of bags on a motorized golf cart. That is, the rolling caddy in accordance with the present invention is not sufficiently large to limit a number of bags accommodated in the area more than a conventionally sized golf bag.
- a foot is provided for and depends from the base with each of the pair of wheels and the foot being disposed near a base perimeter to enable stable support of the bag in an upright position.
- This feature further enhances the usability of the caddy in accordance with the present invention because it can be stored in the upright position without any manipulation of support devices as may be the case with prior art devices. Because it can stably stand in an upright position, it can be grouped with other golf bags in a small area which is impossible with many prior art manual golf carts.
- a ramp is disposed on the base and extends upwardly from the base perimeter adjacent to the pair of wheels for facilitating elevation of the bag up a curb. This provides convenience for manipulating the rolling caddy in accordance with the present invention from a residence to a car or to a golf course or to an airport without actually lifting of the bag from a street, walkway or sidewalk. The ramp thus enables the use of wheels having a sufficiently smaller diameter than the curb being traversed.
- a handle is disposed approximate the bag top for enabling the bag to be rolled on the pair of wheels on an angle to the upright position.
- the foot and pair wheels are arranged in a triangular relationship for providing stable support of the bag in the upright position.
- rolling caddy in another embodiment, includes a base sized for receiving a golf club bag bottom.
- a pair of wheels disposed on the base and within a perimeter of the base, and a foot depends from the base, which in combination with the pair of wheels, enables support of the bag received by the base in an upright position.
- Means are provided for removably attaching the base to the bag bottom.
- the rolling caddy When so coupled, the rolling caddy functions as a unitary golf bag.
- an elastic band may be disposed around a top of the base for providing closure between the base top and an elongated portion of the golf bag. This band thus gives the bag/base combination the appearance of a unitary golf bag.
- closure is effected, dirt is prevented from accumulating between the base and the bag bottom.
- Figure 1 shows a following caddy in front view in accordance with the present invention generally showing a golf club bag having an elongate body, a bottom, and an open top along with a pair of wheels and a foot depending from the base as well as a ramp disposed on the base for facilitating elevation of a bag from a curb;
- Figure 2 is a side view of the rolling caddy shown in Figure 1 ;
- Figure 3 is a perspective view of the base more clearly illustrating a triangular relationship between a pair of wheels and the foot depending from the base and the ramp extending upwardly from a base perimeter;
- Figure 4 is a bottom plan view of the base shown in Figure 3 ;
- Figure 5 is an illustration of compact storage of the caddy in accordance with the present invention on a motorized golf cart
- Figure 6 illustrates an alternative embodiment in accordance with the present in which a base may be utilized a conventional golf bag
- Figures 7 and 8 illustrate the facilitation of the elevation of the bag over a curb by the ramp shown in Figures 1-3;
- Figure 9 in an enlarged perspective view of a retractable handle disposed in a top of the golf bag
- a rolling caddy 10 in accordance with the present invention generally including a golf bag 12 having an elongate body 14, a bottom 20 and an open top 22. All of the components of the present invention may be formed or manufactured from conventional materials suitable for the manufacturer of golf bags.
- a base 24 surrounds the bag bottom 20 and includes a pair of wheels 28, 30 depending therefrom along with a foot 32.
- the base 24 may be integrally formed with the bag 12.
- the pair of wheels 28, 30 may be attached to the base 24 on an end 36 thereof in any conventional manner.
- the foot 32, depending from the base 24 may be formed integrally therewith or attached in any conventional fashion.
- wheels 28, 30 and foot 32 are disposed near a base perimeter 40 and preferably in a triangular relationship for enabling stable support of the bag in an upright position as shown in Figures 1 &
- the wheels 28, 30 may be spaced apart from one another between 9 to 10 inches and with 3 inch wheels the foot 32 may have a rear depth, d' of about and % inches; a length, 1 of about 2 ?_ inches.
- a front foot depth, d; of about 1 inches results in the proper angulated bottom 42 for providing bag stability in the upright position.
- the present invention has been hereinabove described as including a base 24 fixed to a bag 12, the present invention also encompasses, as shown in Figure 6, a base 52 sized for receiving a conventional golf bag 54 on a bottom 56 thereof.
- the base 52 surrounds the bottom 56. Insertion of the bag 54 into the base 52 is illustrated by the arrow 60.
- the base 52 includes a pair of wheels 58 and a foot 62 identical in construction and position as hereinabove described in connection with the embodiment 10.
- a Velcro ® hook pad 64 disposed in the base 52 and a Velcro ® loop pad 66 adhered to a bottom 70 of the bag 54 provides a means for removably attaching the base 52 to the bottom 70.
- An elastic band 74 disposed around a top 76 at the base 52 provides a closure between the top 76 and an elongate portion 60 of the bag 54. As hereinabove noted, this provides for a smooth streamline coupling between the base 52 and the bag 54 for the appearance of unitary construction as well as preventing dirt or debris from accumulating between the bag 54 and the base 52.
- the ramp 84, base 24 and bag 12 may be integrally formed.
- the action of the ramp 84 is hereinafter discussed in detail, however, it should be appreciated that the ramp 86 is effective in an identical function.
- the ramp 84 extends upwardly from the base perimeter 40 and as shown in Figures 7 & 8 , enables the caddy 10 to be raised or elevated up a curb 90 having a height greater than a diameter than each of the pair of wheels 28, 30. This maneuver is important to the intended use of the rolling caddy 10 in accordance with the present invention for facilitating the transport of the caddy 10 across hard or paved surfaces from a residence or a car, car to golf course, car to airport, and similar transportation where curbs 90 are inevitably encountered.
- the ramp 84 may be separately attached to the base 24, however, preferably it is formed or molded as an integral part of the base 24. In addition, it may include a scuff resistant surface for both facilitating the sliding motion of the ramp 84 over the curb 90 and for preventing residual marking on the ramp which may be distractive to the overall caddy appearance .
- the caddy 10 in accordance with the present invention may include a conventional type handle 94 attached to the bag body 14 for lifting the bag, for example, into and out of a trunk of a car.
- a separate telescoping handle 96 may be provided approximate the bag top 22 for enabling the bag 12, and caddy 10 to be rolled on the pair of wheels 28, 30 at an angle to the upright position as shown in Figures 7 and 8.
- the handle 96 is preferably disposed in the bag top 22 in a retractable manner as indicated by the arrow 100. In this manner, the handle 96 is available for transport of the bag as illustrated in Figures 7 and 8, yet is retractable into the bag as shown in Figure 2 so that no interference with golf clubs (not shown) in the caddy 10 occurs.
