Description

LOYALTY SYSTEM AND METHOD OF OPERATION THEREOF
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
This invention relates to a loyalty system and, more particularly, to a loyalty system that is used to implement a loyalty program which offers commercial and financial benefits to participating members of the program. The invention extends to a method of administering a loyalty program.
BACKGROUND TO THE INVENTION
Many different loyalty programs are known and in use today. Many such loyalty programs are based on a barter currency, such as "points" or " miles". The barter currency is earned by purchasing goods and services from participating merchants and service providers. Accumulated barter currency can be redeemed for goods and services from any of the participating merchants.
A problem with these prior art loyalty programs is that they lack any immediate reward for a user of the loyalty program, in that the user is required to first accumulate a sufficient quantity of the barter currency in excess of a predetermined threshold required in exchange for particular goods or services. The predetermined threshold may be set at a level that is a disincentive to the user's continued participation in the loyalty program.
It is desirable for a loyalty program to provide an immediate reward to a participant in the loyalty program. OBJECT OF THE INVENTION
It is an object of this invention to provide a loyalty system, and a method of administering a loyalty program, which has improved functionality relative to prior art equivalents.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
In accordance with this invention there is provided a loyalty system, comprising: a token associated with an authorized user of the loyalty system, the token having an associated storage means; a user access facility operable to load the storage means of the token with a predetermined amount of credit; and a transaction terminal capable of receiving the token for payment of goods and/or services provided by a merchant, the transaction terminal being arranged to calculate a primary transaction discount on the value of the goods and/or services and to decrement the amount of credit stored in the storage means of the token by an amount equivalent to the value of the goods and/or services less the primary transaction discount.
Further features of the invention provide for the loyalty system to include an administration facility operable to calculate a secondary transaction discount on the value of the goods and/or services, for the administration facility to pay the merchant an amount equivalent to the value of the goods and/or services less the primary and the secondary discounts, for the administration facility to pay the merchant by crediting a banking account of the merchant held at a financial institution; for the administration facility to pay an amount equivalent to the secondary transaction discount to at least one other party, for the at least one other party to be the manager of the loyalty system, and for payments to occur by means of electronic funds transfer. Still further features of the invention provide for the loyalty system to include a register of authorized users of the system, for there to be a token associated with each one of the authorized uses of the system, each token having a corresponding storage means and an amount of credit, and for the loyalty system to include a register of merchants participating in the loyalty program.
Yet further features of the invention provide for the token to be a card, for the card to be a magnetically encoded card or a smart card, for the storage means to a magnetic strip on the magnetically encoded card, alternatively a storage memory integral with the smart card, for the transaction terminal to be a point of sale terminal.
There is also provided for the user access facility to be an Internet web site, alternatively for the token to be co-operable with an automated teller machine, for the storage means of the token to be loadable with credit by means of electronic funds transfer to the token from a banking account of the authorized user held at a financial institution, and for the token to be a conventional credit card.
In accordance with a further aspect of the invention, there is provided for the administration facility to include a transaction database, for the transaction database to contain transaction data associated with each transaction conducted on the loyalty system by an authorized user thereof, and for the transaction data relating to a particular authorized user to be accessible and viewable by that authorized user by means of the user access facility.
There is further provided for the authorized users of the loyalty system to be members of a buying club, alternatively staff members of a corporation, further alternatively clients of the corporation, for the authorized users of the loyalty system to be members of a trade union, alternatively supporters of a sporting club, further alternatively members of a collective savings or buying or "stokvel" scheme. The invention extends to a method of administering a loyalty program, comprising the steps of: providing a token associated with an authorized user of the loyalty program, the token having an associated storage means; loading the storage means of the token with a predetermined amount of credit; receiving the token at a transaction terminal for payment of goods and/or services provided by a merchant; calculating a primary transaction discount on the value of the goods and/or services; and decrementing the amount of credit stored in the storage means of the token by an amount equivalent to the value of the goods and/or services less the primary transaction discount.
There is further provided for the method to include the steps of: calculating a secondary transaction discount on the value of the goods and/or services; and paying the merchant an amount equivalent to the value of the goods and/or services less the primary and the secondary discounts, for paying the merchant by crediting a banking account of the merchant held at a financial institution; for paying an amount equivalent to the secondary transaction discount to at least one other party, and for making payments by means of electronic funds transfer.
There is still further provided for establishing a register of authorized users of the loyalty program, for providing a token associated with each one of the authorized uses of the loyalty program, each token having a corresponding storage means and an associated amount of credit, and for establishing a register of merchants participating in the loyalty program.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS A preferred embodiment of the invention is described below, by way of example only, and with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a functional representation of a loyalty system, according to the invention.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
Referring to Figure 1, a loyalty system is indicated generally by reference numeral (1).
The loyalty system (1) includes a register (2) of authorized users of the loyalty system, a register (3) of participating merchants of the loyalty system, an administration facility (4) in the form of an application server, which can be accessed by any authorized user through a user access facility (5), in this embodiment an Internet web server.
Each authorized user of the loyalty system (1) is provided with a token (6) in the form of a smart card with an associated storage means in the form of integral storage memory (7). Each participating merchant is provided with a transaction terminal (8) capable of receiving a token, and reading from, and writing to, the integral storage memory (7) of the token.
The administration facility (4) includes a transaction database (9) which contains transaction data associated with each transaction conducted on the loyalty system (1) by an authorized user thereof, as will be described in more detail in the description that follows.
In use, a user wishing to make use of the loyalty system (1 ) is required to first register as an authorized user of the system and will be issued with a token (6) as described above, by an administrator of the loyalty system. The user then loads the storage memory (7) of the token with a predetermined amount of credit as required by the user. The establishment of credit may be performed by means of an electronic funds transfer from a banking account of the authorized user to the token (6) by means of the user access facility (5). Once the desired amount of credit has been established in this manner, the authorized user may utilize the token (6) at any one of the participating merchants to procure goods and/or services that the user may require.
Payment to the merchant for the required goods and/or services is made by presentation of the token (6). The merchant swipes the token through the transaction terminal (8) that calculates a primary transaction discount applicable to the transaction. The transaction terminal then decrements the amount of credit stored in the storage memory of the token by an amount equivalent to the value of the goods and/or services less the primary transaction discount. The relevant details of the transaction are then transmitted to the administration facility where they are stored in the transaction database. It will be appreciated by those skilled in the art that the authorized user has an incentive to use the loyalty system as, by doing so, he can benefit by acquiring good and services at discounted rates which are not generally available to persons who are not authorized users of the loyalty system (1).
The administration facility (4) then calculates a secondary transaction discount on the value of the goods and/or services and the transaction is settled by paying the merchant an amount equivalent to the value of the goods and/or services less the sum of both the primary and the secondary discounts. The merchant is paid by way of an electronic funds transfer to his banking account that is held at a financial institution. The secondary discount is distributed and paid to one or more other parties connected with the loyalty system (1). Primarily, a transaction fee is paid to the manager of the loyalty system (1). It is envisaged that a transaction fee could also be paid to a party who was responsible for introducing the authorized user to the loyalty program, as well as to any association or enterprise that promotes the loyalty program among its members. As in the case of merchant payments, any payment or distribution of the secondary discount is made by way of electronic funds transfer.
It will be further appreciated by those skilled in the art that the merchant also has an incentive to participate in the loyalty system (1) as he is more likely to gain the custom of authorized users of the system, in preference to a merchant who is not a participant, thereby increasing turnover and profitability.
The transaction database (9), as described above, is updated to contain transaction data associated with each transaction conducted by any authorized user on the loyalty system (1). This transaction data is used for accounting purposes and any authorized user may access and view his own transaction history from the database (9). The transaction history is accessed and viewed by means of the Internet web server (5).
The loyalty system (1) is particularly suited for use by associations or bodies of persons. In particular, the authorized users of the loyalty system may be members of a buying club, staff members of a corporation, or even clients of that corporation. Other possibilities are for the authorized users of the loyalty system to be members of a trade union, supporters of a sporting club, members of a collective savings scheme, or subscribers of a mobile telecommunication network.
Numerous modifications are possible to this embodiment without departing from the scope of the invention. In particular, the transaction terminal (8) may be based on proximity sensing instead of swiping of the token. Further, the token may be a magnetic card instead of a smart card. Additionally, where the token is a smart card, other smart card applications may be included on the card itself to enhance the functionality of the loyalty system. Illustrative examples of such smart card applications are an electronic purse, a personal medical information database, and an access control application. It is to be clearly understood that this list is non-exhaustive.
The invention therefore provides a novel loyalty system which includes a settlement system for settling financial aspects of purchasing transactions entered into by authorized users of the loyalty system.
